Middleton High's lunchroom was already a place of questionable "Possible" logic, but when you add a cynical blonde girl with no fear, a chaotic boy with a giant nose, and a seven-foot skeleton in a "Possible" branded cloak, the "Low-Stakes" meter starts to sweat.
["Danny, the 'Social-Entropy' of the cafeteria has reached a critical resonance,"] Sheila reported. ["Mandy has currently seized control of the 'Cool Kids' table through sheer psychological intimidation. Billy is trying to see if he can 'Phase' his head into a bowl of pudding. And Grim... well, Grim is currently acting as the 'Lunch-Lady's Assistant' to fulfill his 'Spectral-Legal' community service."]
I sat at my usual table with Jenny, watching Mandy stare down Bonnie Rockwaller until the cheerleader literally handed over her dessert and walked away in confused terror.
"She's efficient," I muttered, taking a sip of my juice. "Her 'Cold-Logic' is almost as sharp as yours, Jenny."
"My data says she's 98.4% more terrifying than the average sophomore," Jenny noted, her eyes pulsing violet as she scanned the room. "But Danny, the mystery isn't Mandy. It's the pudding. Pips is detecting a 'Residue' from the Ghost-Pup's adventure. It's a localized 'Underworld-Leak'."
As if on cue, the giant vat of chocolate pudding in front of Billy began to bubble. A skeletal hand made of fudge reached out, grabbed Billy's nose, and pulled him face-first into the bowl.
"Ooh! It's tickly!" Billy's muffled voice echoed from inside the dessert.
"Aha!" Grim shouted, waving his scythe (which was now decorated with 'Possible' safety-glow stickers). "I told you! You can't just leave a 'Spectral-Tracker' like Frosty in a kitchen without an 'Ecto-Buffer'! The food has achieved Post-Life Sentience!"
"It's a Gourmet-Ghoul!" T.J. Detweiler yelled, jumping onto a table. "Everyone! Tactical retreat to the playground!"
"Protocol, move in!" I commanded. "This isn't a war; it's a Clean-Up. Jenny, use your 'Internal-Flash-Freeze'! Grim, use your scythe to 'Re-Anchor' the spirits! Billy... just... stop eating the evidence!"
The mission was a masterclass in 'Chaos-Management.' Jenny skated toward the pudding-monster, her hands transforming into high-pressure 'Coolant-Vents.' She didn't blast it; she 'Tempered' it, turning the sentient fudge into a harmless, frozen sculpture.
Grim let out a deep, Jamaican-accented roar, swinging his scythe in a wide arc. "Back to the 'After-Hours' with you, you sugary specters! You're not on the menu today!"
With a sound like a wet sponge being squeezed, the 'Underworld-Leak' vanished. The pudding became just... pudding.
"Mystery... digested," I said, helping Billy out of the bowl.
I looked at the 'Low-Stakes' meter. 12%. The cafeteria was a mess, Mandy was officially the 'Queen of the West Wing,' and the "Possible Protocol" had successfully survived its first 'Grim' encounter.
But the romance sub-plots were currently 'Sweet' in the lunchroom light as well.
Jenny walked up to me, her metal skin slightly stained with chocolate. She looked at me, her eyes a soft, pulsing violet. "Danny? Mandy says that 'Control' is the only thing that matters in a relationship. But my 'Logic-Sync' says that 'Sharing the Pudding' is a much higher priority. Does that mean I'm failing the 'Mandy-Audit'?"
"You're passing the 'Danny-Audit' with honors, Jenny," I whispered, reaching out to wipe a smudge of fudge off her cheek. "I'd rather share a 'Calamity' with you than 'Control' the world with her."
Jenny's cooling fans whirred in a happy, rhythmic pulse. She leaned in and gave me a quick, metallic kiss that tasted like chocolate and 'Low-Stakes' victory.
Meanwhile, Billy was currently trying to explain the 'Flavor of the Void' to Ron Stoppable. "It's like dark chocolate, but it screams back at you! It's LITERALLY the best!"
I looked at the team: the Middleton heroes, the Amity ghosts, the geniuses, the Titans, and the new 'Endsville' trio. We were a family of many shadows, but as the bell rang for 5th period, I knew the 'Possible Protocol' was ready for its next big challenge.
["Danny,"] Sheila's voice rang in my ear. ["I've updated the dossier. New Recruits: Billy, Mandy, and Grim. Roles: Chaos, Logic, and Legal. Also, Principal Barkin just asked if Grim can 'reap' the school's overdue library books. I suggest we tell him that's a 'High-Stakes' violation."]
"Low-stakes, Sheila. Low-stakes."
