Chapter 53 - The Elmore Error-State

Elmore, California, was the only place in the world where the "Low-Stakes" meter didn't just vibrate—it suffered a total catastrophic hardware failure. The town was a living, breathing paradox where the laws of physics were treated more like "suggestions" by a cast of characters that included a walking T-Rex, a sentient balloon, and a blue cat who seemed to reset the timeline every time he got grounded.

"Sheila," I said, stepping off the "Possible" shuttle and immediately feeling the air turn into a 16-bit resolution. "Scan the local 'Reality-Consistency.' On a scale of 1 to 10, how much of this town is currently rendered in 3D?"

["The readings are... 'Mixed Media,' Danny,"] Sheila replied. ["Elmore Junior High is currently experiencing a Resolution-Rift. It appears Gumball Watterson attempted to 'Download' a new personality from a suspicious pop-up ad, and the resulting malware has turned the school cafeteria into a side-scrolling platformer. The students are currently trapped in a 2D-loop, and the lunch lady is a Level 8 Boss."]

"Oh, no," I muttered. "It's a 'Flash-Game' infection."

"I've got this!" Kick Buttowski yelled, already pulling his helmet tight. "I was born for side-scrolling! It's all about the timing and the ramps!"

"Wait, Kick!" I held up a hand. "Elmore logic is different. If you run too fast, the background might not load, and you'll fall into a literal 'Infinite Void' of white-space."

We entered the cafeteria to find Gumball and Darwin frantically jumping over floating platforms made of mystery-meatloaf. The entire room had been flattened into a two-dimensional plane. Penny (the shapeshifter) was currently stuck as a pixelated butterfly, and Principal Brown was a series of 'Game-Over' text-boxes floating near the ceiling.

"Danny! Help!" Gumball yelled, his voice sounding like a 128kbps MP3. "I just wanted to be 'Edgy and Retro'! I didn't think I'd have to dodge literal flying spatulas just to get a juice box!"

"It's a Graphic-Processing Overload!" Jimmy Neutron shouted, his hair-loop vibrating in 2D. "Goddard! Analyze the source code! We need to 'Update' the room's drivers before the 'Game-Over' becomes permanent!"

"I can provide the 'Processing Power'!" Jenny said, her pigtails transforming into high-speed data cables. "Danny, if I interface with the school's central server, I can 'Force-Render' the room back into 3D. But I need a 'Stabilizer' to keep the pixels from leaking into the hallway!"

"Phineas, Ferb—you're the 'Stabilizers'!" I commanded. "Nigel, Lincoln—secure the exits! We don't want the 2D-effect spreading to the gym!"

The mission was a masterclass in 'Multimodal' problem-solving. Jenny skated to the center of the platform-zone, her body glowing with a brilliant blue-and-silver data-light. She plugged into the 'Malware-Node' (which was actually Gumball's phone, currently stuck in a taco).

"INTERFACING!" Jenny yelled. Her eyes flickered with a billion lines of code.

As the room began to stutter between 2D and 3D, Pips phased out of my pocket. The little Mechamorph-mite had been studying 'Old-School Gaming' in the library, and he knew exactly what the 'Boss' needed: A Cheat Code.

Pips merged with Jenny's data-stream, injecting a "Possible" patch into the malware. Suddenly, a giant 'UP-UP-DOWN-DOWN-LEFT-RIGHT-LEFT-RIGHT-B-A-START' sequence appeared in the air.

"HIT THE BUTTONS!" I yelled to the team.

Kim kicked the 'UP', Ben (as Four-Arms) slammed the 'DOWN's, and Danny Fenton phased through the 'LEFT-RIGHT's.

With a sound like a 1990s computer powering down, the 2D-world collapsed. The platforms vanished, the mystery-meat returned to its (unfortunately) 3D state, and Gumball and Darwin fell onto the floor with a very solid thud.

"Mystery... uninstalled," Gumball sighed, looking at his hands. "I'm round! I'm 3D! I can see my own depth again!"

"It's good to have 'Z-Axis' back," Darwin agreed.

I looked at the 'Low-Stakes' meter. 15%. The 'Reality-Glitch' was patched, Elmore was stable, and the "Possible Protocol" had successfully defeated a 'Level 8 Boss' without losing a single 'Life.'

But the romance sub-plots were currently 'Rendering' in high-definition as well.

Jenny walked up to me, her internal sensors humming with a happy, rhythmic pulse. She looked at the 'Gumball' world, then at me. "Danny? When I was in the 'Code-Stream,' I saw every possible version of us. In one, we were 8-bit sprites. In another, we were claymation. But in all of them, the 'Logic-Sync' was identical. You're my constant, regardless of the 'Resolution.'"

"I'm glad I'm not a sprite, Jenny," I whispered, taking her hand. "But I'd date you even if you were made of pipe-cleaners."

Jenny's eyes glowed a soft, pulsing violet. She leaned in and gave me a quick, metallic kiss that left a 'High-Res' glow on my cheek.

Meanwhile, Gumball was looking at the two of us. "Wait, the 'Insurance-Vest' guy is dating the 'Robot-Space-Girl'? Man, this school is weirder than mine. Do you guys have a talking banana? Because we have a talking banana."

"We have a naked mole rat," I said. "It's a lateral move."

I looked at the team: the Middleton crew, the Amity ghosts, the Retroville geniuses, the KMD, the Loud Sisters, the New York Dragon, and the Elmore Watterson brothers. We were a family of 'Anomalies,' and as the sun set over the surreal hills of Elmore, I knew the 'Possible Protocol' was exactly where it needed to be.

["Danny,"] Sheila's voice rang in my ear. ["I've updated the dossier. New Entry: 'Reality-Resolution Patching.' Also, Gumball just asked if he can 'Download' Jenny's jet-booster blueprints. I've already sent him a 'Virus' that just plays the 'Kim Possible' theme song on a loop."]

"Good girl, Sheila. Let's go get some... 3D pizza."
