Chapter 16 - The First Star Falls

The death of Alaric IV didn't bring the dawn. Instead, the sky above Aethelgard remained a bruised, twilight purple, a canvas for the three new "stars" that had appeared in the stratosphere. They weren't celestial bodies; they were eyes. Massive, burning apertures of alien mana that peered down at the ruined capital with a clinical, predatory coldness.

[Warning: Planetary Quarantine Initiated by 'The Stellar Hunters'.]

[Enemy Type: Astral Parasites (Tier 2).]

[Current Objective: Survive the Descent.]

Ren stood amidst the floating debris of the palace, his body a patchwork of scars and violet smoke. His left arm, lost in the final surge against the Emperor, was now a limb of pure, solidified Void energy. It flickered like a dying candle, yet it felt more real than the flesh he had been born with.

"Lia, get the survivors to the Sottostrato," Ren commanded, his voice vibrating with the resonance of the Forge. "The city isn't safe. When those eyes blink, the surface will burn."

Lia didn't argue. She saw the way the air was beginning to hum—a high-pitched, agonizing frequency that made the stone beneath their feet vibrate. "What about you?"

"I'm going to see how a star tastes," Ren said.

He didn't wait for her reply. He gripped the Void-Reaper, its blade now pulsing in sync with the three eyes above. With a single, explosive burst of Void Step, Ren propelled himself upward. He wasn't falling; he was ascending, a dark needle piercing the veil of the world.

As he broke through the cloud layer, the temperature plummeted. The air became thin, crystalline, and saturated with a foreign mana that felt like needles against his skin.

One of the "stars" began to move.

It wasn't a slow descent. The entity—a Star-Eater Scout—manifested as a geometric horror of white gold and crystalline glass. It was a thousand feet long, shaped like a jagged spearhead, and surrounded by a ring of rotating halos that hummed with the power of a captured sun.

[Target Identified: Star-Eater Scout - Unit 09]

[Level: 85 (Astral Tier)]

[Threat Level: Catastrophic]

"So, these are the gardeners," Ren muttered, his breath hitching in the freezing air.

The Scout didn't use words. It spoke in a beam of pure, concentrated stellar fire. The light hit Ren's Umbral Domain, and for the first time, his shadows were pushed back. The heat was absolute, threatening to vaporize his very soul.

[Shield Integrity: 15% and falling.]

[Sovereign's Command: Inversion!]

Ren didn't try to block the heat. He opened the pores of his Void-arm and inhaled. The stellar fire was sucked into the abyss of his limb, turning the violet smoke into a blinding, chaotic white.

It hurt. It felt like drinking molten lead. But Ren Thorne had spent his whole life being consumed by the world; it was time the world felt what it was like to be consumed back.

He closed the distance in a blur. The Void-Reaper grew, the blade extending twenty feet, wreathed in the stolen stellar fire.

"Void Art: Star-Breaker!"

Ren swung. The scythe collided with the Scout's outer halo. The sound was a harmonic shriek that shattered every window remaining in the city miles below. The halo—a ring of divine energy that had withstood eons—cracked.

Ren didn't stop. He dove into the crack, his body a spinning vortex of darkness. He reached the Scout's crystalline hull and drove the scythe deep into the core.

[Direct Hit! Core Exposed.]

[Initiating 'Great Maw' at 200% Capacity.]

"Eat," Ren hissed.

The Void inside him didn't just take the mana; it ripped the concept of 'light' out of the entity. The Scout's golden hull began to turn grey, the crystalline glass shattering as its internal pressure vanished. The massive spearhead began to groan, its geometric symmetry collapsing into a chaotic heap of junk.

But the Scout had a final defense. It began to self-destruct, its core expanding into a localized supernova.

"Ren, no!" Lia's voice reached him through their soul-bond, faint and terrified.

Ren looked at the expanding sun in front of him. He was Level 65. The entity was Level 85. The math said he should die. But Ren had stopped following the world's math the moment he ate the first Suppression Stone.

"System," Ren thought, his eyes turning into twin singularities. "Burn the Regicide title. Convert all 'King's Aura' into a single point of density."

[Warning: Title Destruction is permanent.]

[Proceeding...]

Ren's body vanished. In its place was a speck of blackness so dense it had no size. The supernova hit the speck and was instantly diverted. The fire didn't explode outward; it was funneled into the speck, disappearing into a dimension that didn't exist.

A second later, the sky over Aethelgard cleared. The first eye was gone.

Ren reappeared, floating in the empty air. He was gasping, his Void-arm now glowing with a terrifying, stable white light. He looked at his hands; they were no longer shaking.

[Level Up! 65 -> 72]

[Ability Evolved: Star-Eater (Phase 1).]

[Loot Acquired: Core of the Fallen Star (Astral Grade).]

He looked up at the remaining two eyes. They weren't peering down with clinical coldness anymore. They were vibrating. For the first time in eons, the Stellar Hunters were experiencing a feeling they had forgotten: fear.

Ren raised the Void-Reaper, pointing it at the next star in the sky.

"Two more to go," he said, his voice a cold, melodic promise. "And I'm still not full."

The city below began to cheer, a low rumble of hope that reached the heavens. The era of the Sun was over. The era of the Void had just begun.
