Carelessnes: The silent ruin
Long ago, in the secluded village of Grimvale, there lived a priest named Vaelor, whose existence was governed more by austerity than by prosperity. He dwelled there with his wife, Elara, and their faithful canine companion, Kichputa. Though Vaelor devoted himself to religious duties, his meagre earnings scarcely sufficed to sustain the household. The persistent weight of poverty gradually transformed Elara's disappointment into resentment. She frequently reproached her husband, accusing him of having condemned her to a life devoid of comfort, travel, and the luxuries she had once imagined for herself.
One afternoon, after completing his customary religious obligations in a modest dwelling, Vaelor began his journey homeward. Fate, however, intervened before he could reach his threshold. A messenger from the village chief approached him with an invitation to perform a sacred devotional ceremony. Vaelor was astonished, for such an honour had never before been bestowed upon him.
The chief was renowned throughout Grimvale for his immense wealth, and Vaelor's thoughts inevitably wandered toward the possibility of generous remuneration. He imagined the relief that such a fortune might bring and secretly envisioned taking Elara on a pleasant excursion, something they had been unable to afford for years.
Upon completing the ceremony, his expectations were surpassed. The village chief presented him with a substantial sack filled with gold coins. Vaelor's heart swelled with delight. He hurried home, already constructing visions of a peaceful journey away from the hardships of their ordinary existence.
Meanwhile, Elara remained at home, washing clothes while contemplating the family's persistent financial difficulties. When Vaelor finally entered the house, his unusual happiness immediately attracted her attention.
"What has brought such joy upon you?" she asked.
Vaelor revealed the unexpected fortune bestowed upon him by the village chief. Elara's former dissatisfaction instantly dissolved into excitement. Together, they resolved to undertake a picnic and temporarily abandon the burdens of their impoverished routine.
That very evening, they gathered provisions, clothing, and everything they believed necessary for their excursion. Yet, amid their haste and anticipation, they committed an oversight whose consequences would later haunt them: they left Kichputa behind.
The following morning, Vaelor and Elara departed without realizing that their companion remained confined within the house. Their attention was consumed by the excitement of their journey, and neither of them remembered the creature that depended entirely upon their care.
For several days, they wandered through distant surroundings, enjoying their brief escape from Grimvale. Meanwhile, within their abandoned home, Kichputa searched desperately for sustenance. The provisions had been taken away, and no one remained to care for him. His repeated attempts to find food proved futile, and the neglected animal eventually perished in their absence.
Days later, while returning home, Vaelor suddenly remembered their dog.
"Kichputa!" he exclaimed, realizing the terrible omission they had made.
He immediately urged Elara to gather their belongings so they could return. After several days of travelling, the couple finally reached Grimvale.
The moment they entered their dwelling, an unpleasant odour filled the air. At first, they could not determine its origin. They searched from room to room until they discovered the dreadful source.
Kichputa lay motionless.
Vaelor called his name repeatedly, expecting the familiar creature to approach him. But there was no response. When they finally approached and touched him, the horrifying truth became undeniable: their beloved companion had died in their absence.
Overwhelmed by remorse, both Vaelor and Elara wept bitterly. Yet their grief could not reverse the consequence of their negligence. They buried Kichputa with sorrow and returned to their empty home, burdened by the knowledge that their carelessness had caused an irreversible loss.
From that day onward, the couple carried a painful lesson within their hearts: a moment of negligence can produce consequences that wealth, regret, and remorse are powerless to undo.
Moral: Carelessness may transform a trivial oversight into an irreversible loss; therefore, responsibility must never be sacrificed to haste or excitement.
