Chapter 31 - The Callback

The brand was called Veln, and in January they had passed on her with the phrase 'family complications' communicated through their casting representative.

Lina had written it in her notebook without annotation and moved on, which was, she had decided, the appropriate response to a door that was closed for reasons she considered inadequate. She had not held it against Veln specifically — the reasoning was common, the thinking was wrong, and the most effective response to wrong thinking was to make it visibly wrong by succeeding without accommodation.

In October, Veln called Carla.

"New creative director," Carla said. "She came in three months ago and immediately started pulling threads on bookings that had been passed on. She found Hart in the rejection file." A pause. "The conversation was approximately four minutes. The summary is: they want a meeting."

"Tell them Tuesday or Wednesday next week," Lina said.

"I'll tell them Monday. You're available."

"Carla."
