Chapter 7 - Beneath the Same Sky

The white petal drifted slowly from the Moonlight Blossom tree.

It fell soundlessly through the silver night air and landed gently in Ling Yue's hair.

Yue Chen noticed it at once.

Without thinking, he raised his hand.

His fingers brushed lightly against her temple as he removed the petal from her dark strands. The touch was soft — almost careless — yet it lingered longer than it should have.

Ling Yue froze.

Her heartbeat skipped, then quickened.

"You—!" she blurted, her voice unsteady.

The moonlight illuminated his face.

His silver hair shimmered like frost beneath the night sky.

For a moment, she forgot to breathe.

"What is it?" he asked calmly.

"N-Nothing," she said quickly, stepping back. "You startled me."

The lake reflected the moon so clearly that it seemed the sky had fallen into the water. White petals drifted around them like quiet snow.

Ling Yue stole another glance at him.

Under the moonlight, his silver hair was breathtaking.

"You really are different from others," she murmured unconsciously.

He tilted his head slightly.

"Different?"

"Yes." She folded her arms to hide her embarrassment. "Your hair. It stands out too much. All the disciples look at you strangely."

She hesitated before continuing.

"You already have low cultivation. If you remain different, they will always find reasons to bully you."

He remained silent.

"Change your hair color," she said softly. "Black… like mine. It would suit you."

There was sincerity in her tone.

"You look… beautiful like this," she added quietly, almost whispering. "But beautiful things attract trouble."

He paused.

Then nodded slightly.

"I will try."

Ling Yue blinked.

"You're actually listening to me?"

"It seems reasonable."

She stared at him for a moment, then smiled faintly.

"You're strange."

They spoke for a while longer about the Sixth Branch teachers and disciples — who was strict, who was lazy, who liked to boast.

Eventually, they returned to the dormitory.

The next morning, Yue Chen woke before dawn.

He walked to the lecture hall.

The Sixth Branch was guided by five instructors:

Elder Qian — Sword TechniquesElder Lian — Alchemy FoundationsElder Mu — Body RefinementElder Zhao — Mind CultivationElder Han — World Affairs & History

Today's lesson was taught by Elder Han.

When Yue Chen entered the hall, whispers immediately began.

"That's him."

"The Qi Gathering disciple."

"He dyed his hair."

"He's blind, isn't he?"

He walked calmly to the last bench and sat down.

His eyes remained closed, as always.

Two male disciples nearby laughed quietly.

"Qi Gathering and blind? How did he even join?"

"Maybe Senior Sister Ling pitied him."

One of them stood and walked toward him.

"Hey, blind junior—"

"Who dares bully my junior?"

Ling Yue's voice cut sharply through the hall.

The disciple froze.

She stepped inside, her expression calm but cold.

"Senior Sister Ling… why are you here? You don't need beginner classes."

"Are you deciding that for me?" she asked coolly.

"No, of course not."

At that moment, Elder Han entered.

Silence fell instantly.

He was a middle-aged man with calm eyes and steady bearing.

"What is this disturbance?" he asked.

Everyone returned to their seats.

Ling Yue bowed slightly.

"I wish to attend today's lecture."

Elder Han studied her briefly.

"Very well. Sit."

She sat beside Yue Chen.

Whispers continued, but more quietly now.

Elder Han began.

"Cultivation is not merely spiritual power," he said slowly. "Understanding the world is equally important."

He paced across the front.

"The Celestial Domain contains countless sects, mortal kingdoms, spirit beasts… and demons."

The word demons caused subtle tension in the room.

"For thousands of years, the Human Realm and Demon Realm have stood opposed."

He stopped and looked at the class.

"Tell me — what separates humans from demons?"

Hands rose immediately.

"Demons are cruel!"

"They slaughter humans!"

"They deserve extermination!"

Elder Han nodded.

"Common doctrine."

His gaze shifted toward the back.

"You. Newly joined disciple."

Yue Chen inclined his head slightly.

"What is your answer?"

The room quieted.

"Humans and demons are the same," Yue Chen said calmly.

Laughter erupted.

"Ridiculous!"

"Has he lost his mind?"

Ling Yue slammed her hand against the desk.

"Silence!"

Elder Han did not laugh.

"Explain," he said.

Yue Chen spoke evenly.

"Humans possess kindness and cruelty."

"Demons possess kindness and cruelty."

"Both fight to protect their own."

He paused.

"War begins when fear replaces understanding."

The laughter softened.

"If understanding existed between realms," he continued, "conflict would lessen."

One disciple scoffed. "Heaven separates us."

Elder Han raised his hand for silence.

"Continue."

"Morality is not determined by race," Yue Chen said. "It is determined by choice."

The room grew quiet.

"In my decades of teaching," Elder Han said slowly, "this is the first time I have heard such an answer."

He stepped closer.

"Why do you believe they are the same?"

Yue Chen replied calmly, "Because both bleed. Both grieve. Both love."

The words hung heavily in the air.

Elder Han nodded slightly.

"You are half correct."

"But reality does not bend to ideals."

"The Law of Heaven dictates separation."

"Until Heaven itself changes… humans and demons cannot walk together."

The lesson continued.

But something had shifted.

Ling Yue sat quietly beside him.

For the first time, she did not see him as weak.

She saw conviction.

After class ended, Elder Han left.

The disciples began whispering again.

Ling Yue tugged Yue Chen's sleeve.

"Do you truly believe humans and demons could live together?"

"Yes."

She hesitated, then leaned closer.

"Sometimes… I think the same."

Her voice was soft.

"If I said that outside, they would call me crazy."

Yue Chen was silent.

"I don't hate demons," she continued quietly. "Some stories say there are demons who protect their people, just like us."

She swallowed slightly.

"Maybe I'm foolish."

"You are not," he said calmly.

She looked at him.

"Why do you believe it?"

He paused.

"Because I have seen both sides."

She did not understand the depth of that statement.

But she felt its weight.

She smiled faintly.

"Come with me."

"Where?"

"I'll show you something."

He nodded.

They walked out together.

Behind them, whispers continued.

But under the wide sky—

They walked side by side.

The same sky that covered both humans and demons.

And beneath it—

Two hearts moved closer, quietly.

Unknowingly.
