Chapter 246 - *Chapter 245: Street Battles in King’s Landing, Jon Benefits*

King's Landing, Aegon's High Hill, Hook Lane Defense Line

The entire city of King's Landing consists of three high hills, among which Aegon's High Hill, named after Aegon the Conqueror, is the highest point in the city.

Precisely because of this geographical advantage, the Shepherd chose this place as his defensive position; he had long since learned that there were actually not many defenders inside the Red Keep.

With the aid of Aegon's High Hill, the enemy's cavalry advantage could not be utilized at all. Once they lost the boost of horsepower, knights were merely difficult-to-deal-with tin cans.

And now, Bloodstone Volta, a member of the Gemstone Brotherhood and the only remaining individual with extraordinary abilities, was leading his troopers to inspect the defense line known as Hook Lane.

On these roads leading to the Red Keep, the church's Warrior's Sons and Poor Fellows used wooden beams and tiles from surrounding buildings to construct simple fortifications, forcing the garrison outside the city to engage in street fighting with them.

The section of Hook Lane that Bloodstone Volta was responsible for was the widest street besides the main thoroughfare. If the enemy broke through here, they could reach the plaza outside the perimeter of the Red Keep.

"Lord Volta! Can we really defeat those noble knights?"

After completing a round of inspection, Bloodstone Volta's personal guard, Lemon, couldn't help but ask.

Upon hearing the question, Volta glanced at him with a somewhat cold gaze, then spoke with a hint of pride:

"Our equipment may not be as good as theirs, but in this environment, they have no advantage. The strength of noble armies lies in battle formations; in such narrow spaces, only the brave survive."

"I knew it! The Seven must be protecting us; we will surely be victorious."

Another personal guard, Straw, became instantly excited upon hearing his commander's words.

"Hmph…"

Seeing the expressions of his two guards, Volta let out a mocking chuckle in his heart.

"Only if idiots like you continue to risk your lives at the front can we obtain more benefits."

In Volta's mind, there were only two types of people in the world: useful people, like himself, and useless people, like these two guards.

In the recent battles, his old friends had died on the battlefield one by one. This did not affect Volta, because in his view, only useful people could survive; they failed and died because they were useless.

Clang, clang, clang…

"Enemy attack…"

Just then, a series of rapid bell tolls and warning shouts quickly reached their ears.

"Prepare for defense, raise your shields!"

"Others, prepare the Fire Oil…"

"Bring out those spears…"

…Under Volta's decisive orders, the tactical plan was quickly and accurately conveyed to every armed member of the church. Following the orders, the troops were soon assembled.

The church's units were based on squads. Normally, a squad consisted of one heroic Warrior's Son knight and seven Poor Fellows as the vanguard, with others being ordinary believers.

These church armed units, organized by squad, quickly moved to their designated strategic positions upon receiving orders.

The Warrior's Sons and Poor Fellows were equipped, wearing mail or leather armor, and using longswords, spears, and shields as weapons.

As for the fanatical believers who had no training at all, the reason they could still stand there was entirely due to the faith in their hearts.

Meanwhile, on the outskirts of the defense line, a well-equipped noble army was advancing slowly but steadily.

After a night of preparation, the people inside the Red Keep had already figured out the church's deployment and sent out the intelligence via raven message.

Tramp, tramp, tramp…

Amidst the rhythmic sound of footsteps, these noble soldiers formed solid phalanxes six abreast. Their shields were engraved with their respective house sigils, gleaming with a metallic luster under the sunlight.

The spears of the rear-rank soldiers protruded over the heads and shoulders of the shieldmen in front, as dense as a forest, exuding an imposing aura that could not be underestimated.

These soldiers were well-trained elites with consistent strides, their eyes filled with determination and courage.

As the two most powerful forces in the south, the troopers of the Westerlands and the Reach were the most well-equipped in the Seven Kingdoms.

As the distance between the two armies gradually shortened, the tense atmosphere almost solidified.

The air on the battlefield was thick with the smell of rust and sweat, mingled with the shouts of officers and the heavy breathing of warriors.

The church's armed personnel gripped their weapons tightly, staring fixedly at the enemy ahead, while the noble army approached step by step with steady paces. Under the rising sun, these closing noble soldiers looked like gods descending to earth.

"Loose!"

Swish, swish, swish…

Suddenly, a rain of arrows pierced the sky. Upon entering range, both sides launched their attacks almost simultaneously.

The church's archers accurately loosed arrows at the noble army, while the noble army was not to be outdone, their archers responding with equal firepower.

Arrows wove into a deadly net in the sky. From time to time, warriors fell, but neither side showed any intention of retreating.

"Ready!"

"Defend!"

Bang, bang, bang…

Crack…

Amidst the sounds of collision and shouting, the impact of the two armies was deafening. The noble soldiers crashed against the church's defense line like ocean waves.

First, shields blocked the advance, then spears thrust into the enemy formation. Their spearheads glinted coldly in the sun, each thrust claiming an enemy life.

The church's spearmen and shieldmen likewise formed an indestructible defense line. Their spears were like a crocodile's fangs, constantly stabbing at the noble soldiers.

The battle became exceptionally fierce. Soldiers from both sides displayed unparalleled courage and strength in the trial of blood and fire.

With every clash, lives vanished; with every impact, shields shattered.

The battlefield was filled with the sound of metal clashing, the shouts of warriors, and the neighing of warhorses.

As time passed, more and more corpses littered the battlefield, and blood stained the earth red.

"Kill!"

"Ha!"

"Ugh… cough…"

Wielding a spear, Bloodstone Volta's spear-play was like a soaring dragon; he quickly and completely killed the three noble soldiers besieging him. Although these House Lannister soldiers were well-equipped, they could not compare to Volta in terms of combat skill.

By now, Volta was covered in blood, looking like a demon emerging from a bloodbath. His unit had already retreated across several defense lines.

Although they had been using various methods to attack these noble soldiers, the gap in equipment and numbers still caused them significant hardship.

Specifically, the disparity in the number of professional warriors wasn't as prominent in the early stages, but later on, once the church's armed personnel died, the fanatical believers who had been temporarily conscripted would be slaughtered by the noble soldiers.

"Lord Volta, fall back!"

Seeing another ten or so men closing in, Volta was prepared to continue attacking them. However, at that moment, a shout came from above his head.

Upon hearing the voice, Volta quickly retreated. Simultaneously, several oil barrels and jars were smashed down from the rooftops.

Boom, boom, boom…

"Aaahhh…"

The Lannister soldiers who had closed in had no time to react and were quickly ignited by the flames. Looking at the soldiers who were like human torches, Volta rushed forward and knocked them all down one by one with his spear.

"Prepare to retreat to the next defense line!"

After shouting this to the soldiers beside him, Volta walked toward the next street. The enemy's numbers were still too great; although they could use the geographical advantage to delay the enemy's attack speed,

once both sides entered a stalemate, only failure awaited them. The reason Volta was still persisting was entirely because of a certain plan the Shepherd had told him.

"I hope that Dragon King's army can get here quickly!"

Clang, clang, clang…

Just as Volta was muttering to himself, warning bells suddenly echoed throughout the skies of King's Landing.

From the Red Keep, Cobbler's Square, Fishmonger's Square, the central plaza, and countless towers whose names were unknown, bells rang out almost simultaneously.

This was the signal that the enemy had breached the city gates. During the War of the Usurper, the city guards had rung them once before after discovering the Lannister army's betrayal.

And today, King's Landing, which had been peaceful for nearly thirty years, once again welcomed another conqueror. Unfortunately, that conqueror did not lead his army; the person truly coming to take over King's Landing was his Queen.

Roar, roar, roar…

Just as everyone's attention was drawn by the bells, a dark shadow suddenly appeared in the sky above King's Landing. Immediately after, thunderous dragon roars echoed across the city at the same time.

After two hundred years, dragons had actually appeared over King's Landing once again. Although there was only one dragon, many elderly people understood that King's Landing was likely about to change masters.

"The Targaryens, blessed by the Seven, have descended upon King's Landing once more! Long live!"

"Victory belongs to us!"

"Charge!"

…Upon seeing the dragon soaring in the sky, the Shepherd immediately passed down the order to attack.
