Chapter 18 - Chapter 17

190 AC, King's Landing, The Red Keep

Inside the quiet sanctuary of his bedchamber, high within the pale red stone of the royal fortress, a young boy stood motionless before a tall silvered glass mirror. Sunlight filtered through the tall arched windows, casting long, geometric shadows across the cold flagstone floor. He appeared no older than six, his small frame draped in fine blue wool embroidered with subtle dragon scale patterns at the cuffs, but his eyes held an unnerving, age-defying depth. Framing his youthful face were not the classic features of Old Valyria—striking black hair with distinctive silver- gold hair that caught the morning light and sharp, one blue and one brown eyes. This was Prince Valarr Targaryen.

As he stared into his own fragile reflection, Valarr let his awareness retreat inward, contemplating the dangerous political currents threatening to drag the Seven Kingdoms into blood and fire.

So much has shifted over the last three years, he mused silently, tracing the outline of his small hand against the cool, reflective glass. The balance of power is tilting, noble allegiances are quietly fracturing, and the faint, bitter scent of war hangs heavy over King's Landing.

Throughout those three years, Daemon Blackfyre had stepped back into the realm's public eye with calculated grace and unmatched martial brilliance. He frequented the tourney circuit from the Reach to the Riverlands, entering the lists to the deafening roar of adoring crowds. Lance after lance shattered against his shield as he claimed victory after victory, capturing the hearts of highborn lords and common smallfolk alike. To the realm, he was not merely a bastard made legitimate; he was the living embodiment of chivalry—a flawless warrior, martial perfection incarnate, wielding the ancestral Valyrian steel blade of Aegon the Conqueror bestowed upon him by his late father.

Yet behind that shining veneer of honor lay a far sharper, more sinister edge. Aegor Rivers, better known to the realm as Bittersteel, was relentlessly weaving a web of alliances in the shadows. Driven by an unyielding malice toward the court and a cold, strategic efficiency, Bittersteel rode between the ancestral seats of disgruntled lords. He whispered promises of land, titles, and royal favor, quietly binding those who felt slighted by the growing Dornish influence at court to Daemon's cause.

And Grandfather can do nothing to stop it, Valarr reflected grimly, his chest tightening.

King Daeron II, named the Good by those who favored peace, law, and scholarship, found himself trapped in a web of political restraint. Daemon had made no open moves against the throne, committed no outright treason, and given no legal cause for arrest. Furthermore, as the most formidable legitimized bastard of King Aegon the Unworthy, Daemon carried both the blood of dragons and a legal shadow over the succession.

Moving against his half-brother without undeniable proof of treason would instantly ruin Daeron's standing across the Seven Kingdoms. It would paint the King not as a wise, just ruler preserving order, but as a jealous, paranoid tyrant driven by fear—a cruel reputation Daeron was desperate to avoid. Thus, the crown was forced into an agonizing silence, forced to watch its enemies rally in broad daylight while pretending the realm remained whole.

Even Lord Bloodraven, with his vast network of spies and whispers, remained infuriatingly passive. Brynden Rivers saw every shadow in the Seven Kingdoms, yet he seemed content to let the pieces fall according to some grand, dangerous design of his own. Valarr knew the bloody history that was destined to unfold, but bound within the weak body of a six-year-old child, his hands were tied. He could neither command guards nor convince the Council of the storm gathering on the horizon.

A crisp, double knock on the heavy oak door shattered the silence of the room, the sharp sound echoing off the bare stone walls.

"My Prince," an attendant's voice called out respectfully from the corridor, "it is time to depart. The royal escort is assembled in the outer ward, and the King's party awaits you in the courtyard."

Valarr took a long, steadying breath, letting the tension drain from his shoulders. He smoothed the front of his tailored doublet, straightened his mantle, and cast one last, lingering glance at the child staring back at him in the mirror. Gathering his composure and carefully masking his heavy thoughts behind the innocent, submissive smile expected of a six-year-old prince, he turned away from his reflection and stepped toward the heavy door.
