Chapter 124 - 124. The Lie — And So-un’s Will

The Lie — And So-un's Will

Jin Mu-sik was ten years older than Jin Mu-gwang.

Though the great-grandfather still lived, the true weight of the household rested upon him.

He had never ridden out to serve the court.

He had remained, tending fields, accounts, people.

Yet that quiet stewardship had hardened into authority.

And now he asked directly.

There was no graceful way to avoid it.

So-un could not speak everything.

Nor could he remain silent.

There are things that cannot be hidden from the eyes of a clan head.

Years leave a residue of instinct.

The way men move.

The way earth is disturbed.

The way silence thickens in corridors.

So-un hesitated.

He is the elder brother.

Can I trust him?

His thoughts stretched and thinned.

He waited.

He hoped Mu-sik would say something—anything—that did not match the fear rising in his own chest.

"War… you say war. What do you mean by that?"

He deflected first.

Bought a breath of time.

Mu-sik did not press with anger.

The faint smile that had lingered at the corner of his mouth dissolved into something steadier.

"So-un. Speak plainly. Concealment is not wisdom at a moment like this. The men who have gathered here are the finest soldiers my brother ever trained. They did not wander here by accident. They answered a summons."

His gaze did not waver.

"Loyalty. Honor. Those are what hold an army together. But loyalty is not direction. Why have they come to this peaceful land? What do they intend to defend? I am the head of this house. I must know. Who is the enemy?"

The words were quiet.

The question was not.

So-un drew in a long breath.

Mu-sik already knew enough.

He had seen the additional men arrive.

He had seen the grounds dug and rearranged.

He had seen the glances exchanged in passing.

No explanation had been offered.

Suspicion fills the space where truth is withheld.

"We prepare… for a contingency," So-un answered carefully.

"In case something happens. They—no, we—intend to protect the clan."

It was not a lie.

It was not the whole truth.

His eyes lowered.

He felt the strain of shaping words so that they would not fracture.

"From whom?"

The question cut cleanly.

So-un's tongue stalled.

"Well…"

Lies were heavier than he had imagined.

Mu-sik spared him the cruelty of forcing it.

"An army gathers only to face another army. Not the local militias. The scattered men of Anyang would not require this. Then it must be the Emperor's forces. And if the imperial army moves, there must be cause. Our Jin household has little that warrants such action."

He paused.

"Except one."

Their eyes met.

It was not suspicion that lived in Mu-sik's gaze.

It was fatigue.

It was the face of a man who had borne a family's fate alone.

"My brother. Jin Mu-gwang."

He spoke the name slowly.

"Has he committed treason?"

So-un shook his head.

"No."

"Embezzlement?"

"No."

Mu-sik's jaw tightened.

"Then what? Even had he done such things, the imperial army would not strike this estate now. Unless…"

His mind moved with dreadful clarity.

Land grants.

Titles.

Silence from the court.

The pieces aligned too neatly.

In that instant, So-un moved.

He did not rise.

He did not gesture.

He merely let his breath descend.

Qi spread outward, thin as mist and tight as drawn silk.

The air pressed inward.

Sound faltered.

The world around them dimmed—not in sight, but in reach.

Voices from outside dissolved before touching their ears.

Even the rustle of leaves seemed to halt at an unseen boundary.

A passage once noted in the margin of the Compendium.

Compress the air.

Seal the sound.

Create a chamber within the world.

They stood within a silence not meant for others.

The truth hovered between them.

No longer rumor.

No longer suspicion.

Only waiting.
