Chapter 84 - Chapter 84: The God's Return

Ten years.

Jarine had counted every one.

Not in days—that would have been unbearable. But in gardens. In crops planted and harvested. In children born and raised. In the slow, patient work of living that Ren had taught him to value.

The twins had grown into remarkable adults. Jarine—the boy—had become a skilled gardener, his hands moving through soil with the same intuitive grace as his namesake. Sera—the girl—had inherited Ren's love of teaching, her classroom beneath the Sky-Tree filled with children from a dozen species.

The valley thrived. The Alliance grew. The door remained open, welcoming all who came in peace.

But Jarine felt the absence every day.

Not as grief anymore—that had softened into something gentler. But as a space. A Ren-shaped hole in the universe that nothing else could fill.

Aegis noticed, of course. The demi-god had become attuned to Jarine's moods over the decades.

"You're thinking of him again."

"Always." Jarine smiled sadly. "I don't think I'll ever stop."

"You shouldn't. He was worth remembering."

They sat beneath the Sky-Tree, watching the sunset paint the valley in gold. The twins were nearby, teaching a class of young Mer to identify edible plants. Their laughter carried on the evening breeze.

"I wonder," Jarine said slowly, "if there's any chance—"

He stopped. Aegis waited.

"Any chance that gods can return? After... after what he did?"

Aegis considered. "I am not divine, Commander. Not truly. But I know that gods are... persistent. Their essence does not simply vanish. It transforms. Returns."

"You think he could come back?"

"I think anything is possible. You've taught me that." The demi-god's form pulsed warmly. "If anyone could find their way back from sacrifice, it would be Ren."

That night, Jarine dreamed.

He stood in a place he recognized—the Garden of Souls. The glowing trees, the singing flowers, the spirits moving peacefully between them. But something was different. The garden felt... expectant. Waiting.

A figure approached.

It was Ren.

Not the aged mortal he had become, but the god he had been—radiant, eternal, alive. His eyes held the warmth Jarine remembered, and when he spoke, his voice was music.

"Jarine. You came."

"Ren? Is it really you?"

"A piece of me. The part that loved you, that loved the valley, that chose to care." He smiled. "The rest of me... is elsewhere. Doing what gods do."

"Can you come back? Truly back?"

Ren was silent for a moment. Then: "Yes. But not yet. Not the same way."

"What way, then?"

"A new body. A new life. A new chance." He stepped closer, his radiant form dimming slightly. "I could be reborn. In your valley. Among your people. Grow up as one of them, learn what it means to be mortal all over again."

Jarine's heart hammered. "You'd do that? Give up godhood?"

"I already did. For you. For them." Ren smiled. "This time, I'd do it for me. To experience what I only glimpsed before—a full mortal life, from beginning to end. With all of you."

"When? How?"

"Soon. The garden is preparing." He reached out, and though they couldn't touch, Jarine felt warmth. "Tell them. Tell the twins their Uncle Ren is coming home. Tell the valley to prepare a garden for me."

"I will. I promise."

"Good." Ren began to fade. "I'll see you soon, old friend. Keep planting."

He vanished.

Jarine woke with tears on his face and hope in his heart.

He told the valley the next morning.

They gathered beneath the Sky-Tree—thousands of them, their faces a mixture of hope and disbelief. The twins stood at the front, their young faces alight with wonder.

"Ren is coming back," Jarine said. "Not as a god—as one of us. A child, born in this valley, to live a full mortal life among us."

Murmurs rippled through the crowd.

"He asked us to prepare. To make a garden for him. To welcome him home."

Elara—the current Elara, fourteenth of that name—stepped forward. "How do we prepare for a god's rebirth?"

"The same way we prepare for anything. With love. With patience. With hope." Jarine looked at them—his people, his family, his home. "We plant a garden. Right here, beneath the Sky-Tree. A garden just for him."

They began that day.

The garden grew quickly—faster than any natural garden should. The Mother contributed golden fungi from her network. The Mer added water-plants from their pond. The dwarves carved a small stone bench, inscribed with Ren's name. The Thinkers designed a fountain that played the music Ren had loved.

Jarine worked alongside everyone, his old hands moving through soil with the same joy they had always known. The twins helped, their young strength compensating for his age.

"Do you think he'll remember us?" Sera asked. "When he's born again?"

"No. That's the sacrifice of rebirth. He'll be new—a blank slate, ready to learn and grow." Jarine smiled. "But we'll remember. And we'll teach him. And he'll learn to love us all over again."

"That's sad. And beautiful."

"That's life."

They waited.

Days passed. Weeks. Months.

The garden bloomed, its flowers and fungi and water-plants creating a space of perfect peace. The fountain played its music. The bench invited rest. The valley visited often, leaving small offerings—a stone from the dwarves, a shell from the Mer, a drawing from a child.

Jarine came every day, sitting on the bench, talking to Ren as if he could hear.

"The twins are doing well. Young Jarine planted his first solo garden last week—a bed of Frost-Heart apples, just like I taught him. Sera taught her hundredth student yesterday. She has your patience, your kindness."

He paused, listening to the fountain.

"The valley misses you. Aegis misses you. I miss you. Every day." He smiled. "But we're okay. We're living. Fully. Completely. Now. Just like you taught us."

A breeze stirred the garden—warm, gentle, familiar.

Jarine's breath caught.

In the center of the garden, where the golden fungi grew thickest, a light appeared. Soft at first, then brighter, then radiant. It shaped itself—slowly, gently—into a form.

A child. Newborn, perfect, alive.

Ren's mortal rebirth.

Jarine gathered the child in his arms, tears streaming down his face. "Welcome home," he whispered. "Welcome home, old friend."

The child opened his eyes—warm, brown, familiar—and smiled.

The celebration that night was the greatest the valley had ever known.

Jarine held the child throughout, unwilling to let go. The twins sat beside him, their young faces full of wonder.

"He's really back," young Jarine whispered.

"He's really back."

"What do we call him?"

Jarine looked at the child—at those warm, familiar eyes, that peaceful smile.

"Ren," he said. "Just Ren. He's earned the right to be simply himself."

The child gurgled happily, as if in agreement.

And the valley celebrated long into the night.
