Chapter 80 - Chapter 80: The Debt's Due

The celebration lasted three days.

Not wild revelry—Jarine's people had learned moderation over the centuries—but genuine joy, shared meals, music that wove through the valley like the Life-Web itself. The Mer sang from their pond. The dwarves tapped their finest aged ales. The Thinkers composed symphonies in real-time, their mechanical minds creating harmonies that made even the guardians weep.

Jarine moved through it all, accepting embraces, sharing smiles, being present. But beneath the joy, a weight pressed on him.

253,000 Merit Points. Due in one year.

Aegis noticed. The demi-god's energy form pulsed with concern as it walked beside him through the celebration.

"You are troubled, Commander."

"I owe a debt. A large one. The System doesn't forgive such things."

"What happens if you cannot pay?"

Jarine had researched that before making the purchase. The answer was not pleasant.

"Penalties. Severe ones. Loss of System access, for starters. Possibly worse—the Shop has enforcement mechanisms I've never triggered."

Aegis considered this. "Then we must earn the points. Quickly."

"One year. 253,000. That's nearly 700 per day—more than I've ever earned consistently." Jarine shook his head. "Even with your help, even with the valley's resources, that's... a lot."

Aegis's form brightened. "Then we do not rely on the valley alone. We venture out. We find worlds with high-value quests, dangerous threats, worthy challenges."

"You'd come with me?"

"I am yours, Commander. Where you go, I follow." The demi-god paused. "Also, I am curious. You have seen so many worlds. I would like to see them too."

Jarine smiled. "Then we go together. Ren too, if he's willing."

"Ren is always willing," said a voice behind them. The god-turned-mortal appeared, his arms full of Mer-crafted snacks. "I heard 'adventure' and 'danger' and 'high-value quests.' I'm in."

They left at dawn.

The valley gathered to see them off—thousands of faces, young and old, representing a dozen species and a hundred worlds. Elara embraced Jarine tightly.

"Come back safe. All of you."

"Always." He looked at Ren, at Aegis, at the door shimmering with potential. "Ready?"

"Ready."

They stepped through.

---

The first world was a war zone.

Two factions—elemental beings of fire and ice—had been fighting for millennia, their conflict consuming the planet. The Life-Web here was barely a whisper, choked by ash and frozen by eternal winter.

Aegis assessed immediately. "The conflict has weakened both sides. If we can broker peace, the rewards will be substantial."

"Broker peace between beings who've hated each other for ten thousand years?" Ren raised an eyebrow. "That's ambitious."

Jarine smiled. "I've done ambitious before."

They spent three months on that world. Jarine planted gardens in the no-man's-land between factions, creating spaces where fire and ice could meet without destroying each other. Aegis protected the gardens with its demi-god power. Ren negotiated tirelessly, his divine patience (what remained of it) finding common ground.

On the final day, the leaders of both factions met in the garden—a place of living green, warmed by the fire elementals' presence and cooled by the ice elementals' restraint. They signed a treaty.

The System rewarded them generously.

[Quest Complete: The Eternal Conflict]

Reward: 85,000 MP.

---

The second world was a dying star.

A civilization had built their homes on a sun's surface, their bodies adapted to impossible heat. But the star was failing, its light dimming, its warmth fading. They would perish within decades.

"They need a new sun," Ren said, staring at the readings. "We can't give them that."

"No," Jarine agreed. "But we can give them time."

He planted seeds from his pouch—seeds that shouldn't grow on a star's surface, shouldn't even exist in such conditions. But the Life-Web energy he poured into them, combined with Aegis's demi-god power, created something new. Plants that absorbed stellar energy and amplified it, stretching the star's life by centuries.

The star-dwellers wept with gratitude.

[Quest Complete: The Dying Star]

Reward: 62,000 MP.

---

The third world was a prison.

A cosmic entity, ancient and powerful, had been trapped by lesser beings who feared its power. It had done nothing wrong—it was simply different, and difference was threatening. For eons, it had waited, its rage building, its patience fraying.

"If we free it," Aegis calculated, "it may destroy its captors. Or it may thank us. Or both."

"We free it," Jarine decided. "Injustice doesn't become right just because it's old."

Breaking the prison took weeks. The captors had layered defenses over millennia, each one more complex than the last. But Aegis's demi-god power, combined with Jarine's understanding of life energy and Ren's knowledge of divine structures, eventually found the key.

The entity emerged—vast, beautiful, grateful.

It did not destroy its captors. Instead, it transformed them, showing them what they had become, offering them a chance to change. Some accepted. Some didn't. The entity let them go either way.

Before they left, it gifted them a piece of itself—a shard of pure cosmic energy, worth more than anything they had earned.

[Quest Complete: The Prisoner]

Reward: 120,000 MP + Cosmic Shard.

---

They returned to the valley with three days to spare.

Jarine calculated the total: 85,000 + 62,000 + 120,000 = 267,000 MP. More than enough to cover the debt, with a small surplus.

He paid the System immediately, watching his balance reset to a healthy 14,000 MP.

[Debt Repaid: 253,000 MP]

Remaining Balance: 14,000 MP.

Status: Current (Good Standing).

Ren collapsed on the grass beneath the Sky-Tree. "I never want to see another war zone, dying star, or cosmic prison again."

"Liar," Jarine said. "You loved every minute."

Ren grinned. "Okay, maybe a little."

Aegis stood beside them, its energy form pulsing with contentment. "This is what you do, Commander. Find the hardest places and make them better. I am honored to witness it."

Jarine looked at his friends—his god-turned-mortal companion, his demi-god guardian, his valley full of people who mattered.

"The honor is mine," he said. "All of it."
