Chapter 10 - The Attack

Thanks for the powerstones!

I'm motivated now!

Yosh!

The rubbery mutant's limbs snapped back into place, then its legs lengthened forcefully. Turning into a blur, he shot toward Mark with swift speed.

Mark, at the last second, reacted by crossing both of his arms in front of himself.

Bang!

A muffled sound rang out and the mutant raised his second hand. The arm stretched, and he brought it down like a hammer.

Boom!

Mark caught the attack. His legs buckled slightly, and the force of the impact caused the ground to crack.

The mutant's legs shortened and his body was drawn back, but Mark's grip on the hand he caught never let go. Instead, it grew tighter. Tensing his muscles, Mark yanked the mutant back.

Caught off guard, the mutant was drawn back like a yo-yo toward Mark, and a fist struck his face.

Mark's hand released its hold, and the mutant flew back like a cannonball. But Mark didn't let him escape—he reeled the mutant back in, grabbed his head, and threw him toward the mutant fighting Peter.

Reacting instinctively, the ice mutant shifted one of his hands away from Peter toward the incoming projectile. But by the time his peripheral vision caught the elongated limbs and he realized it was his teammate, it was too late to stop the attack.

The ice wave struck the rubbery mutant, freezing him solid into an icicle, but the momentum didn't diminish. The frozen mutant slammed into the ice mutant, sending both of them flying.

Peter didn't miss the opportunity. Searing flames erupted from his hands, coating his palms in fire. He charged swiftly toward the remaining ice mutant and brought his hand down.

Boom!

A small explosion rang out, and the headless ice mutant collapsed weakly to the floor.

Peter turned toward Mark, only to see him sprinting toward Vera—specifically toward the light-controlling mutant. Peter's eyes flashed with a complicated expression before he turned to support Boris.

The light-controlling mutant was still attacking and injuring Vera when Mark slammed into him like a freight train from behind. The force snapped the man's spine forward, sending him flying into the metallic wall before he bounced off onto the ground.

"You ok?" Mark asked Vera.

She nodded, and Mark turned his attention back to the rest of the battlefield.

Wanda was battling a mutant who could phase through walls, attempting to strike her from all sides. However, the attacks proved futile against the telekinetic field surrounding Wanda. Suddenly, the mutant jumped out from the wall again, but this time Wanda turned sharply to face her. Thrusting her hands forward, Wanda sent the woman blasting backward, slamming her hard against the wall.

Mark turned away from her, a small frown on his face. Each of the remaining mutants from the rebel group was facing an opponent who either countered or suppressed their ability.

'The mole,' Mark thought, before running into the fray to assist.

Thirty minutes later, with one final boom, Viktor and Dragan's fists smashed into the face of the mutant who had spoken earlier. Their fists collided, and the Titan's head burst apart, scattering blood and brain matter around.

Dragan exhaled and turned back to look at the group. The others were already exhausted, with several suffering serious injuries and missing limbs.

"There's no need to trouble yourselves anymore," Dragan said. "You should—"

The heavy thud of the closing metal door interrupted his words.

"Wh-What's going on?!" one of the mutants shouted.

Dragan frowned and walked to the door, his body turning to solid silver. He struck a powerful punch against it, creating a fierce shockwave where his fist connected, yet the door didn't budge.

Viktor stepped forward as well. The two exchanged a glance, nodded, and threw a synchronized punch. Despite the muffled explosion, the door remained unyielding.

Dragan straightened up and turned back to the group.

"Seems like they've regained control of the doors," he said, shaking his head with a slight smile. "But it doesn't matter. Now that we're inside, the mission is ninety percent complete. You guys rest here and wait for good news."

The injured mutants looked at one another, then back at Dragan. "Okay."

Dragan nodded to the uninjured mutants. "Let's go. We need to hurry before the higher-ups try to run."

As they walked down the metallic hallway, Mark shifted closer to Wanda.

"Don't forget what I told you," he whispered in a low voice.

Wanda nodded silently.

In his laboratory, Baron Von Strucker watched the group stealthily navigate the hallway through the security monitors.

"It seems the one with the high regenerative factor is too unpredictable. Unpredictable is bad," Baron muttered. He turned to the man standing beside him. "Dr. List, tell him to act."
