POV: Leo
The gunshot was still ringing in my ears when the world dissolved into chaos. The bullet hadn't hit a person it had claimed the rear window of Vitelli's SUV, raining glass down like frozen diamonds but it served its purpose. It shattered the standoff.
"Get him in the car! Now!" Vitelli screamed, his voice no longer smooth. The mask of the sophisticated mobster had slipped, revealing the frantic predator beneath.
I didn't go quietly. I couldn't. Every muscle in my body was screaming to reach for Ava. I saw her a flash of blonde hair and a pale, terrified face as Mark dragged her backward. He had her in a chokehold, the jagged blade of that folding knife still pressed against her throat.
"Leo!" she shrieked. It wasn't a cry for help. it was a goodbye.
