Chapter 72 - The Fool's Last Breath

Lucien let go of Zekai's throat.

Zekai dropped, knees cracking against stone, coughing hard, one hand clamped over his neck.

Lucien stood over him. "Now." His gaze shifted to Null Drakular. "Let's see what happens when I take the other thing you think makes you special."

His eyes tracked the movement. The sword lay several meters off. He had nothing left in him to stop this.

Lucien crossed to it, looked down, and reached out. Fingers closed around the hilt.

Nothing happened.

The blade didn't budge. He pulled harder. It stayed rooted in the stone like it had grown there. His brow creased.

"So physical force means nothing to it."

He let go. The sword still hadn't answered him — he could move it, sure, but it refused to recognize him. Whatever lived inside that steel wasn't his to command.

Lucien raised a hand instead. The stone beneath the blade groaned, a crack racing outward from where it sat. The whole slab tore free of the ground and rose, dust blasting outward, Null Drakular lifted along with it — his telekinesis wrapped around the rock, never once touching the hilt directly.

The black-red blade turned slow in the air. He rotated it once, then again, studying the edge, the veins running its length, the faint pressure it gave off.

He examined it for a long moment. Then his fingers twitched and the stone shattered to dust, leaving the sword suspended in the air.

"It doesn't obey strength." His eyes cut to Zekai. "It obeys recognition."

Zekai barely lifted his head.

Lucien's expression cooled. "Then let's see what it does once its recognized bearer is dead."

Zekai was still on the floor, barely tracking the words.

Lucien crossed back to him. "Then I'll simply remove the owner."

Zekai's eyes widened. He tried to move. Nothing answered.

"Do you know what the Fool actually is, Zekai?"

Zekai's vision had nearly gone out. He could just barely hear him.

"The beginning." A pause. "And the ending."

Lucien's eyes lit gold. "So I'll break your beginning—" He lifted a hand. "—before you ever get near your ending."

His wrist turned. Null Drakular tore free of the air and shot toward him — one black-red streak crossing the distance in a blink.

THOOM!

The blade punched clean through Zekai's chest, entering at the heart, exiting his back. His body jerked. Knees hit stone.

Null Drakular held him upright for one terrible second, the steel behind him keeping his collapsing body from falling. Blood ran down black-red metal. He looked down at it, fingers shaking.

"...Null—" His voice gave out before the name finished.

Lucien stood several meters back, hand still raised. A small motion, and the telekinetic hold released.

Zekai sagged against the blade. His knees finally went. He fell sideways, dragging the steel down with him, and hit the stone. He waited for the cold. It never came. His mind finally caught up with what his body already knew. No coming back from this one. Zekai's thoughts went strangely quiet. "...So this is it."

He couldn't feel his legs. His arms had gone numb. His heart stumbled — once, twice, then barely registered at all.

Lucien watched him fall without moving. Silence.

For one impossible second Zekai felt nothing at all — no pain, no fear, no anger.

Zekai's consciousness started to slip. Images surfaced out of order. His parents, standing together, before everything that took them from him.

Marcus under the circus lights, alive, grinning, calling his name like tomorrow was a guarantee.

Aron behind the register, that flat expression hiding a kindness he'd never admit to owning.

He grabbed for those images — not because he wanted to die holding them.

Because he was scared this was the last time he'd ever see their faces. His eyes shook. "Sorry, Mom. Dad. I couldn't even make it to your graves one last time." Barely words at all. "I'm sorry."

"I couldn't protect everyone."

The world began to fade.

Dark should have taken him whole. Instead something crimson flickered into his failing sight — a translucent interface, fractured, barely holding a shape at all.

[BEARER TERMINATION DETECTED.]

Something in him stirred, faint.

[FOOL AUTHORITY — CRITICAL RESPONSE]

The letters warped.

[PATH COLLAPSE DETECTED.]

[ARCANA SEQUENCE INTERVENTION.]

Then the final line.

[QUEST FAILED.]

His pupils contracted.

[ ARCANA THRESHOLD ]

Alternative Consequence:

ONE YEAR OF LIFESPAN

In Exchange:

NEXT MAJOR ARCANA

AWAKENING PATH — UNLOCKED

For a second none of it registered. Then the meaning landed.

A year. Gone.

'My life's actually ending.'

The thought arrived with a clarity that frightened him more than the pain did.

'And now I've lost a year of whatever's left too. What happens to me after this?'

His awareness began to fade again. Then something in him refused. Not Zekai. Not the body dying on the stone.

The Fool. The interface shattered.

[FOOL AUTHORITY — EMERGENCY RESPONSE.]

[REALITY COLLAPSE — FORCED.]

The sanctuary cracked open.

A black-red fracture tore through the space directly beneath him — not opening like a door. Tearing — violent, reality splitting at the seam. For the first time all night, real attention sharpened behind Lucien's gold eyes.

The fracture widened. Zekai's body slid toward it, fingers scraping uselessly against stone. "What—" He had no framework for what was happening to him.

The Witnesses moved almost as one. Hella's chains shot out and wrapped around Zekai's arm, yanked taut against the fracture's pull until they screamed and snapped clean.

Jerom stepped to the collapsing edge, crimson force surging forward — the fracture swallowed it before it reached him.

Fenros lunged and stopped dead at the boundary. Not hesitation. The space between them had simply stopped behaving like space. Its claws hung suspended inches from his body, and those inches had become unmeasurable.

Fenros pulled back, something close to uncertainty crossing its face for the first time.

Nihil opened the Grimoire. The instant his pen touched the page, the letters distorted. He tried again — the words held for less than a second before collapsing into meaningless symbols. His expression hardened. Even his Grimoire, it seemed, had finally run into something it couldn't describe.

Astrael raised a hand, his Authority reaching for the fracture, trying to force the edges shut. For a moment the tear narrowed.

Then it rejected him outright. His eyes went thin. He lowered the hand without a word.

None of them could cross. The fracture had stopped being a gap in distance.

It had become a wall between realities.

Lucien stepped forward. The fracture rippled at his approach and he stopped. For the first time since Zekai had entered the sanctuary, Lucien reached for something and failed to take it. His eyes studied the boundary. He extended a hand.

The space between his fingers and Zekai's body warped hard, the distance threatening to collapse—

Then the fracture rejected the connection too.

He lowered the hand slow. His face stayed calm. His eyes hadn't. He understood something.

Zekai didn't. And Lucien had no plans to explain it. Whatever lay past that boundary sat well outside his reach now.

Zekai's body kept sliding deeper into the tear, Null Drakular still lodged through his chest, moving with him, every shift sending fresh agony through a body that had almost nothing left to feel it with.

He couldn't pull the blade free. Couldn't even release his fingers from the stone he'd been clawing at.

The fracture dragged him back regardless.

Lucien watched, silent. Nothing here answered to him anymore.

Zekai looked down at the steel jutting from his chest, blood running the length of it and disappearing into the distortion. Somehow, even now, he was still carrying it with him.

Lucien's voice reached him from a long way off. "So it chose you again."

The fracture widened. Zekai kept sliding, no control left over anything happening to his own body.

He thought this was death. Maybe it already was. He looked at Lucien one final time, vision almost fully black.

A smile crossed his mouth — not the old cynical one. Something colder.

"I don't know—" His voice shook. "—if I'm going to make it out of this."

Lucien said nothing back.

Zekai's grip closed tighter around the hilt.

He couldn't tell anymore if this counted as escape or death. Maybe there wasn't a difference left to draw.

His sight had nearly failed completely, but Lucien's shape stayed visible through the widening tear. Something in him kept burning anyway — not hope. Just anger, cold and clear.

"You took everything from me." His fingers tightened.

"You broke my body."

The fracture pulled him deeper.

"You made me believe I was powerless." His eyes opened one last time. "But you made one mistake."

His stare locked onto Lucien. "You let me survive." His voice barely carried. "If I live—" His eyes stayed open. "—remember this."

The fracture swallowed half of him. His expression went cold. "I'll find you."

The last of the distance collapsed. "Wherever you're hiding—" His voice dissolved into the distortion. "—I'm killing you. Bastard."

A faint smile lingered even as the fracture sealed shut around him.

He was gone.

The sanctuary dropped back into silence.

Lucien stood in front of the empty space where he'd vanished. The six stayed behind him. None followed. None could — whatever lay past that fracture had shut itself to all of them.

He studied the emptiness for a long moment. Then his expression settled back into its usual calm.

"Run, Fool." He turned away. "But remember—"

His gold eyes cut back once. "An ending doesn't disappear simply because you escaped it."

The fracture sealed shut completely, and this time the quiet held.

For one heartbeat, nothing existed at all. Then Zekai was thrown clear of the collapsing distortion. His body hit asphalt and rolled several meters before it stopped.

The impact barely registered — he'd taken worse tonight. What scared him was the silence that came after.

No Arcana response. No frost. No healing. Nothing.

The evening swallowed the sound of the crash. He didn't move for several seconds.

Blood pooled beneath him, spreading dark across the road.

Null Drakular remained lodged through his chest, the black-red blade jutting from his back and pinning his body twisted against the asphalt.

His fingers stayed locked around the hilt — the sword was the only thing still holding his body together.

He couldn't feel his hands. Couldn't feel his legs. Couldn't tell if his heart was still working underneath the steel.

He waited for the cold on instinct. Nothing came. He waited another second. Still nothing.

Since the Snow Monarch's blessing had entered his life, he had never once been this alone inside his own body.

Did I actually survive this?

Above him, crows gathered in slow circles, watching without descending, without leaving — just fixed on the body lying broken beneath them.

Whether they'd already written him off as a corpse, or were simply waiting for him to become one, even he couldn't say.

The road stayed silent. He had nothing left to answer it with.

Then—

[FOOL AUTHORITY — UNRESOLVED]

The interface flickered once. And went dark.
