Chapter 63 - The Witnesses of the End

Zekai couldn't move.

The chains found his legs before his instincts even registered a threat. One second he stood with Null Drakular in hand. The next, black links tore up from the stone and coiled around his ankles, climbing his calves, crossing his knees, cinching his waist, snapping around both wrists hard enough to wrench his shoulders back.

Clank.

The sword fell from his fingers. Null Drakular hit the stone and lay there, motionless, like it had already been forgotten.

His breath caught. He hadn't felt the attack coming — not even a fraction of a second of warning. The Fool's Authority had gone completely silent.

That silence scared him worse than the chains did. His power had never gone quiet on him before. Not once, not even when he had no idea how to use it.

'What...'

He strained against the bindings. Nothing gave. He pulled harder, arms shaking with the effort, and the chains didn't so much as flex.

Another loop wrapped his chest. Then another. Within seconds he hung several feet off the ground, body dangling helpless in the open air.

Blood rushed to his skull. His fingers went numb. He tried his legs. Nothing answered.

"Fool Authority."

Silence. No response at all. That shouldn't have been possible — his ability had always been there, even in the years he hadn't understood a thing about it. And now it simply wasn't.

'How did I not feel this coming.'

His eyes tracked to the six figures ahead. None of them had moved.

A woman with silver hair stood slightly apart from the group, bored, watching him the way someone watches an insect crawl inside a jar. Her fingers twitched. The chains pulled tighter, and his whole body jerked.

"A-ah—"

Air hissed out through his teeth. This wasn't ordinary restraint. Something deeper than muscle had gotten caught in the pull — his soul, pinned by pressure wrapped around a part of him that shouldn't have been touchable at all.

'This isn't physical.' A chill dragged down his spine.

'She's cutting my access to the Fool.'

Null Drakular was still there.

'They hadn't suppressed the sword.' His stomach dropped. 'They'd suppressed me.'

The blade remained bound to his soul, untouched by whatever power held him down. But Soul Armament required his Authority to command it.

Without that connection, the sword couldn't dissolve.

And it couldn't return. For the first time since he'd obtained it, Null Drakular was simply a weapon lying somewhere he couldn't reach.

The chains didn't read as bindings anymore. They read like a verdict already handed down. Whatever they touched simply stopped being allowed to move.

The woman tilted her head. "Still fighting, worm?" Calm. Almost gentle. Somehow that made it worse.

"So you're the one doing this." A faint curl touched her mouth — no answer of her own.

"Hella," another figure said. A man with red hair standing several paces behind her, a dark military coat hanging off his frame, its tails stirring in wind that had no business moving at all. His posture stayed rigid, unreadable.

The rest said nothing.

Zekai's eyes moved past her to him, then swept the group. Six of them, and none of them fit any category he had. Something about their presence felt fundamentally wrong, like his body knew something his mind hadn't caught up with yet.

The red-haired man caught his stare. "Marshal Jerom." He said it flat, no ceremony, like the title spoke for itself.

Zekai looked at him a beat, then grinned — the same irritating grin he wore any time someone tried to make him flinch.

"So you're the Marshal."

Jerom's gaze sharpened. "You sound disappointed."

"Expected someone scarier."

Silence held a second.

"You will be." His eyes swept over Zekai's frame. "Just not yet."

Zekai glanced around the circle. "Six on one." His grin widened. "I'm flattered."

One of them laughed. Another clicked his tongue. Hella's face gave nothing.

He pulled against the chains again. "Should feel honored, really." He lifted his chin. "But if you needed six of you to hold down one guy—"

His eyes went hard. "—you should've brought more."

The laughter died. Several of them looked genuinely annoyed now.

Jerom kept his eyes on him. "Still arrogant."

"Hasn't caught up yet," Nihil's voice said.

The speaker had blue hair, a face too beautiful to belong on a person, and eyes with nothing behind them. An old black Grimoire hung loose in one hand, like it was simply part of him rather than something he carried.

Zekai catalogued the rest one by one. Green hair, a weapon built like a skeleton's whip resting easy in his grip — Ossian. Beside him stood something that only wore the proportions of a man out of politeness, black hair falling flat over a face too still to be patient — Fenros. And at the edge of the group, quiet, unmoving, yellow hair catching the pale gold light from above — Astrael.

None of them read as human. Not fully. They looked like things that had worn human shapes long enough to remember what a human was supposed to resemble.

His grin dropped for half a second.

'What the hell are these things.'

Hella glanced at Jerom. "Marshal."

His eyes stayed on Zekai. "Release him."

Her brow lifted.

One of the others laughed. "Marshal's taken an interest."

Another voice picked it up. "Show's about to start."

A third scoffed. "Then let it start."

Ossian adjusted his grip on the bone-white weapon.

Zekai's eyes flicked to him.

Jerom spoke again. "Remove the restraints."

Hella hesitated. "Marshal—"

"Do as I say."

Whatever authority lived in that sentence silenced her instantly.

The chains loosened. He dropped, boots hitting stone, and he twisted into a roll on instinct, eyes already hunting for the blade.

There. Several meters off. He rose, rolled one shoulder, then the other, and felt something like confidence crawl back into his chest.

He took one step toward Null Drakular. Then another. The staircase stayed fixed at the edge of his vision — the only way out.

Sword first. Then the exit.

'Can't run. So I survive this.'

"Good." He glanced across the six of them. "Now we play."

He didn't need to defeat six monsters. He only needed one opening. His fingers were inches from the hilt when Ossian's mouth curved. "Careful."

Zekai stopped. Too late.

He didn't hear the strike arrive. He heard it after it had already passed through the space where he'd been standing.

A black claw cut for his throat.

Instinct screamed and he dropped, the edge passing over his hair by a hair's width. Fenros was already gone from where he'd struck. His pupils shrank as something slammed into his ribs.

BOOM!

He flew sideways. Before gravity finished the job, Ossian dropped over him, Vespercoil already cracking down toward his chest.

He crossed both arms. The cord wrapped tight. The world spun once and the whip yanked him clean through a stone pillar.

CRACK!

The column came apart in a wall of dust. He hit the debris, rolled through it, ribs screaming, a cough tearing blood up his throat.

He forced himself upright. "Frost Heal."

Cold spread through his frame. The pain thinned, his ribs snapping back into alignment, breath steadying under him.

He stared at his own hands. 'Okay.' He wiped blood off his lip. 'So they hit hard.'

'Fine. I heal.'

Glancing at Vespercoil still coiled in Ossian's grip, he ran the math.

'As long as they can't kill me faster than this thing repairs me — I've still got a shot.' Confidence flickered back. He reached for Null Drakular.

Fenros moved — too fast to track. A fist caught him in the gut and folded him in half. Fenros grabbed his collar and threw him skyward.

He twisted in the air, blind, no idea where the thing had gone.

Then a hand closed around his ankle and slammed him back down.

BOOM!

Stone cracked under him. He bounced once, vision swimming, and tried to push up.

Then a shadow crossed his face. Fenros's fist came down.

He rolled. It missed his skull by inches.

BOOM!

The ground erupted where his head had been.

'That would've ended me.'

He scrambled backward. Fenros didn't chase. He just watched, eyes tracking.

Left. Right. His shoulder. His feet. His breath.

'It's studying me.'

Fenros's head tilted. Then he smiled.

Zekai's jaw tightened. 'It's learning.'

Not hunting him like prey anymore. Reading him like an opponent it intended to fully understand before it finished the job.

Blood ran thin from the corner of his mouth. He stepped back, eyes sweeping the six of them.

Jerom hadn't moved. Hella hadn't moved. Nihil hadn't moved. Astrael hadn't moved.

Only three had actually attacked him. And he was already losing.

'No.'

His fist closed. 'I'm not losing this.'

He surged forward, body moving ahead of the thought behind it, fingers closing around Null Drakular's hilt. The steel vibrated the second he touched it, dark pressure crawling up his arm.

He grinned. "Now." He raised the blade. "My turn."

He swung.

Fenros blocked, the impact shaking the ground under both of them.

He twisted his wrist mid-strike. Fenros adjusted instantly. He shifted direction, blocked again, stepped left — followed. Right — blocked. High — blocked. Low—

Fenros's hand closed around the flat of the blade.

His eyes went wide. That angle shouldn't have been readable — he'd changed it mid-swing, hadn't known himself where the blade would land until his body finished the motion.

'It already learned the pattern?'

Not reacting anymore. Adapting.

Fenros pulled. He let go before it tore his arm out of its socket, stumbling back, and for the first time his confidence cracked clean down the middle.

Fenros flung Null Drakular away. It landed meters behind him.

Zekai's instinct screamed for it to return. Nothing happened.

'Right. Soul Armament is still suppressed.'

Null Drakular remained where it fell. Untouchable by their Authority. Useless without his.

Fenros advanced.

Fists up, he exhaled. "Fine. Don't need the sword." He charged.

They met in the middle.

He struck. Fenros caught it without looking. He changed the angle — caught again. A knee, an elbow, both swallowed by the same easy block, like Fenros wasn't defending so much as filing each attempt away. Then Fenros came back at him — a fist he barely pulled his head clear of, a second he ducked, a third he sidestepped. The fourth—

Fenros's fist froze an inch off his face.

He went still. It had predicted him.

'No.' His stomach dropped. It had predicted the version of him that was trying to predict it.

A knee drove into his stomach. Then a fist. Then another. He staggered back, unable to keep pace.

'Why.' Another hit landed. 'Why can't I read them.' Another. 'My ability should—'

Fenros's hand closed around his skull.

BOOM!

His face met stone. The world flashed white. For several seconds he heard nothing at all.

Then a voice cut through. "Still don't understand?"

He forced his head up. Nihil stood a short distance off, an old black Grimoire open in his hands, pages turning on their own.

"You keep trying to fight us." Nihil's finger touched a page. "You should learn what you're actually fighting first."

He spat blood. "Save the lecture."

Nihil's face didn't change. He wrote a single word onto the page.

Sound.

Silent.

Zekai couldn't hear his breathing. Couldn't hear his heartbeat. Couldn't hear his own movements. For one disorienting second, he couldn't even tell whether he was moving.

His thoughts stumbled. 'Where are they?' He turned instinctively.

Nothing. His sense of distance collapsed with it.

'I can't hear anything.' His breathing quickened.

He forced himself to stay still, but without sound to anchor him, every movement around him became impossible to read.

'He's not just taking away sound. He's cutting away one of the ways I understand the fight.' His focus fractured. And that was exactly what they wanted.

Astrael spoke for the first time. "Rejected."

He turned toward the voice, not understanding. His body had moved exactly the way he'd told it to. Somehow the movement had simply failed anyway.

The silence remained absolute. 'I can hear him?'

Astrael's voice hadn't travelled through the air.

It had appeared directly inside his awareness. An Authority speaking through Authority.

His stomach tightened. 'So even Nihil's silence can't block them completely.'

Nothing had blocked him. Nothing had stopped him physically. It felt like the world itself had ruled his action wasn't permitted to happen.

'Rejected what?'

Astrael didn't explain. He moved instead, and Zekai's leg buckled under him for no reason at all.

His face shifted, slow and cold.

'They're not just fighting me.'

'They're rewriting the rules I exist under.'

A thin red line opened across his shoulder. Blood welled up. He hadn't seen the strike land at all.

Jerom finally moved — a single step. The blood dripping from the wound stopped mid-air.

Every falling drop froze in place. Not from time stopping.

From Jerom deciding the blood no longer belonged to him.

It hung there, and he stared at it, understanding a beat too late that the man hadn't controlled his blood.

He'd claimed it.

The droplets twisted, folded into a spear shape.

His eyes went wide. "Wait—"

It shot forward. He twisted, too slow — it punched through his side and he gasped.

Jerom looked almost bored by the result. "Too slow."

The spear dissolved. He dropped to one knee, frost spreading fast through the wound, closing it shut. His breath came ragged. His hands shook — not from pain this time.

From understanding exactly how far outmatched he was.

'I can't see them coming.'

'I can't predict them.'

'I can't out-muscle any of them.'

'I don't even know what rules they're playing by.'

His eyes found Null Drakular, still lying too far off to reach in time.

He forced himself up.

Then the chains came back.

Clank.

His ankles locked in place. He went still.

Hella stood exactly where she had before, hand never raised.

"You're starting to understand."
