He stepped toward the staircase. A transparent wall snapped into existence in front of him.
Thunk.
His forehead bounced off it. "...Seriously?"
He pressed a palm against it. Didn't budge. "You're making this way harder than it needs to be."
The guardian's voice stayed low. "You misunderstand. This place isn't another dimension." His eyes found Zekai's. "It exists beyond every world you know."
"No reality was ever meant to touch it. Only a fracture unstable enough to forget its own rules could have carried you this far."
Zekai frowned. "...Right."
"I'm sure that matters a lot." A beat. "I don't have time for a philosophy lecture, though."
He looked the man over head to toe. "...Can I ask you something?"
"Ask."
His eyes lingered on the white robes. "My eyes have been bugging me for a while now." A pause. "...Anyway. Where'd you get that outfit?"
The guardian didn't move, eyes fixed on him. "...Focus on why you're here."
His expression stayed perfectly calm. "Unless you want me to give you another reason to use those eyes."
Zekai's hands shot up. "Ah — fine, fine." He glanced away. "Going."
The guardian just watched him for a moment.
Zekai sighed. "There's literally a countdown running on my life right now."
A glance at the number still burning behind his eyes — 99.4% now, and rising. "So let's just get this over with."
Null Drakular materialized in his grip. "So let's just get this over with."
The guardian didn't move — didn't ready himself to fight, didn't try to stop him either. Just watched.
Zekai stepped forward. Swung.
CLANG!
The blade hit empty air, the impact rolling out across the whole valley in a metallic shockwave, ripples spreading into nothing.
And nothing happened.
He stared ahead. "...Figured."
His grip tightened. The crimson vein running down the blade lit up, a low metallic hum building underneath it.
'Haaa.' He drew one breath, planted his footing, and swung.
SLASH!!
The valley shook. This time something gave. Hairline fractures spread across the empty air in front of him.
The guardian's face changed for the first time — his calm eyes narrowing.
"...Impossible."
Another crack. Then another, spreading like a windshield taking hits.
CRASH!!
The barrier shattered into radiant fragments and dissolved into the wind. Silence dropped back over the valley.
The guardian stared at the space where it used to be.
"...You broke—" A pause. "—Synthesis." Real surprise in his voice this time.
Zekai rested the sword on his shoulder. "Don't know what Synthesis is." A faint grin. "But it's broken now."
The guardian's voice cooled several degrees. "It changes nothing." His eyes went to the stairs. "A human cannot climb those steps."
"Maybe." Zekai's grin held. "I already broke one rule today."
He lifted a boot and set it on the first stair without waiting for permission. "...See? No more rules."
The instant his boot touched stone, his whole body locked up.
"...!"
Pressure crashed down on him from every direction at once — no single source, just everywhere.
Wrong.
Wrong.
Wrong.
It wasn't crushing his body. It was crushing his right to exist at all. His own heartbeat felt like it weighed a hundred pounds.
"...Gh—"
Every breath came like dragging air through solid rock. His knees started to buckle.
He tried lifting the other foot. It wouldn't answer — something beyond physics simply refused the request.
His vision swam. For a brief instant, he felt countless unseen eyes open across the whole sanctuary at once.
Watching.
Judging.
Rejecting.
His grip crushed the hilt. "...What the hell—"
Cold sweat rolled down his face. Frost Heal did nothing for this. Not an injury.
A law.
The staircase itself had simply decided he didn't count as real.
Behind him, the guardian said nothing — didn't warn him, didn't help, just watched.
Then Null Drakular trembled.
Deep metallic resonance rolled out across the valley.
"Hm?" He looked down. The crimson vein pulsed.
Once.
Twice.
Again — almost like the sword itself had gotten irritated on his behalf.
A faint smile broke through the strain on his face. "...You're reacting too, huh."
The hum built louder.
"...Guess you don't like being told no either."
He raised the blade. "Haaa."
One decisive strike.
CLANG!!
Null Drakular slammed into the ancient stone. The whole sanctuary rang with it.
The valley went dead quiet. The crushing pressure didn't shatter — it hesitated.
For one impossible second, the ancient law governing that staircase paused, like something older than the law itself had answered the blade's call.
The weight around him rippled once, then pulled back — not in defeat, but in acknowledgment, like the sanctuary recognized another Authority standing within its domain.
Air rushed back into his lungs. "...Hah." A long breath out.
A real smile spread across his face this time — warmer than the bitter one he usually wore after clawing his way out of another impossible fight.
Relief. First time since the Fool's Authority had taken root in him that the world had actually stepped aside instead of forcing him to his knees.
He looked down at the blade. "...So there are things only the two of us can do."
The sword hummed back, low and satisfied.
A short laugh escaped him. "...Guess we're stronger than either of us thought."
Zzzzsup.
The interface flickered up in front of him — and this time it didn't hold steady.

He stared at it. "...Foreign Authority?"
The screen flickered once and vanished.
"...You really love giving me half an answer and running."
He lifted his other foot and set it on the second step. For one flickering instant his shadow simply wasn't there.
He didn't notice. The guardian did — his eyes dropping to the white stone under Zekai's boots.
The shadow snapped back like it had never left.
The guardian's face gave nothing away. "...Interesting."
The moment his boot landed on the second step, every statue lining the avenue opened its stone eyes at once and turned to face him.
Behind him, the guardian smiled — distant, unreadable. The look of someone watching a prophecy land exactly where it had always been headed.
"Interesting. The Ascension Steps... recognized something."
Zekai glanced back at him. "My Authority?"
The Guardian's eyes shifted toward Null Drakular.
"Did I say that?"
Zekai's eyes narrowed. "Then what recognized me?"
The Guardian gave no answer. His gaze slowly lifted toward the sanctuary above.
"...So you actually crossed the threshold."
A brief pause. "Then let's see if you're worthy of what's waiting up there."
The breeze died. The birds went silent. Even the sunlight felt colder somehow.
For the first time since he'd stepped through the fracture, Zekai looked up at the sanctuary above the endless staircase and felt something in his chest finally go still.
The frozen forest. The Alpha pack. The sanctuary's own barrier.
One after another, he'd cut through every wall this place had thrown up in front of him.
And still — some instinct told him the real test hadn't started yet.
His grip tightened around the hilt.
"...I'm finally strong enough." A faint smile. "Whatever's waiting up there — I'll cut through that too."
Without another word, he kept climbing.
Above him, the sanctuary stayed silent and patient, waiting to see if that confidence would survive contact with whatever it was guarding.
