Zekai walked alone, hands buried in his damp coat.
Then he stopped.
About fifty meters ahead, something disturbed the air — invisible to everyone else on the street. Pedestrians crossed without a second thought. Cars drove straight through the same patch of road.
He saw it anyway.
A thin curtain of dark stretched across the road, tiny black ripples spreading through it as though the fracture had recognized him first.
It wasn't merely waiting there. It was inviting him in.
Not solid. Not liquid — closer to black glass, rippling against the surface of the world. Whatever sat behind it looked wrong.
A chill crawled over his skin.
"...Another one." He didn't hesitate this time.
The first crossing had taken everything from him.
This one, he'd chosen to walk into on his own terms. This one might give some of it back.
The crimson interface flickered into view.

[ REALITY FRACTURE ]
Objective:
Identify the Source.
Resolve the Anomaly.
Reward:
???
Failure Penalty:
REOCCURRENCE
Interval:
30 Days
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
His eyes stuck on the last line.
Reoccurrence.
The word meant something. Not enough, though.
"...Reoccurrence?"
He stared at the red text. "What's that supposed to mean?"
A smaller window unfolded beneath the quest, unprompted.
[ REOCCURRENCE ]
A failed assignment does not reset the completed timeline.
Instead, its unresolved consequence will manifest again after the assigned interval.
Current Interval: 30 Days
The previous occurrence will remain unchanged.
Future occurrence: NOT IDENTICAL
Resolution of the underlying cause will cancel the Reoccurrence.
He read it twice. Something shifted in his expression.
"...So it doesn't repeat." He looked toward the black fracture ahead. "It comes back."
The screen sat there, motionless. His eyes narrowed. "If I fail this—"
He caught the thirty days sitting under the penalty line. "—the same problem shows up again in a month."
A quiet breath left him. "So I don't get another shot at it." His gaze returned to the rippling dark. "I get another disaster."
That distinction mattered more than the wording let on. Fail today, and nothing here got undone. And thirty days later, whatever waited on the other side of that fracture came back for another round.
He slid his hands deeper into his coat.
"...Then I can't leave this half-finished."
Aron was already out there somewhere, waiting on him. He wasn't going to let a second person vanish while he hesitated at the door.
He laughed once, low — not amusement. Something closer to understanding, arriving late.
"...So that's how you want to play this." He looked up at the rippling fracture.
Whatever hesitation had been sitting behind his tired eyes drained out.
"I've spent my whole life running from things I couldn't change." One step forward.
"If getting stronger means walking through hell to get there—"
Another step.
"—then I'll keep walking."
The black membrane rippled gently in front of him. Nothing left in his face that looked like fear, or doubt, or anything he needed to hide.
Just purpose. He reached out without another word. He looked back exactly once.
Greyhaven carried on behind him, unbothered. Nobody on that street had noticed the impossible door standing open in the middle of the road.
He faced forward again. His fingertips broke the surface of the dark.
The membrane answered instantly.
VVVVVVMMMM—
Reality folded like disturbed water. The fracture widened around him.
Then he stepped through.
The black swallowed him whole.
For one heartbeat, Greyhaven simply ceased to exist.
—
The fracture rippled hard the instant Zekai crossed through it. The membrane folded shut behind him, sealing quiet and final.
No way back the way he'd come. He'd have to find another way through — same as everyone else who'd ever fallen into one of these.
A freezing gust struck his face like a slap.
"...Cold." His boots sank into soft snow.
He lifted his head. His eyes went wide.
Pine forest stretched into the mist, branches sagging under snow.
"...Whoa." The cold smelled clean — no smoke, no dust, none of Greyhaven's noise.
Just winter. And silence deep enough to feel like a held breath.
A quiet smile crossed his face.
"Now this—" A pause. "—this is actually beautiful."
It felt like it had sat exactly this way for thousands of years, never once belonging to anyone.
His breath left him in pale clouds. Another gust slid under his coat collar.
A single snowflake drifted down. He lifted his palm and let it land, watching it melt almost the instant it touched his skin.
He watched the droplet vanish between his fingers, something in his chest loosening for the first time in weeks.
"...Never seen snow this clean before."
He rubbed his arms on reflex, jaw tight against the cold.
"I crossed an entire dimension wearing nothing but a coat."
A sigh. "Next time—"
"—I'm packing for wherever I end up."
Crunch.
Something landed on a branch nearby.
His expression sharpened instantly, his hand drifted toward his empty waist before he caught himself. He'd almost forgotten — Null Drakular didn't rest at his hip anymore.
The branch bent under weight. A white deer broke from the treeline, crystal antlers flashing once in the light, and vanished back into the snow before he'd fully registered it.
Zekai watched the place where it vanished. There were no hoofprints.
Zekai blinked. "...Just a deer." He let out the breath he'd been holding.
"Don't do that to me."
High overhead, dozens of black crows circled overhead, calls echoing down through the valley.
He looked up. "...Yeah. That's usually not a good sign."
He kept moving deeper into the trees. Eventually they thinned out ahead of him, opening onto a broad clearing.
He dropped without thinking, crouching low behind a snow-heavy pine before his mind caught up to why.
Something enormous sat in the middle of that clearing.
He leaned forward, deliberate. His breath caught in his chest.
A wolf. Monstrous. Over seven meters at the shoulder, dark silver fur, crimson eyes set into a skull the size of a car. Its jaws were buried deep in the carcass of a snow deer, bone cracking loudly with every bite. Fresh blood soaked the snow beneath it. Nothing about it moved like it still counted as an animal.
Its claws alone were bigger than a human hand.

Entity Identified: Wolfrezon
Threat Level: Unregistered
Origin: [REDACTED]
"Wolfrezon."
It hadn't noticed him yet.
"...That's not a predator." His voice barely made it past a whisper.
His hand hovered near his hip, ready to call Null Drakular the moment he needed it.
"...That's a disaster that learned to grow fur."
Before he could decide whether retreat was even an option, its ears twitched.
Its head lifted, unhurried.
Crimson eyes locked directly on the pine he was hiding behind.
The whole forest went dead silent.
He let out a breath. "...Great."
"It already smelled me."
