Chapter 42 - The Prison of Existence

Deep within Operations Command—

The tactical display still showed a vacant space where Aldric's signal had once existed. The room sat in complete silence.

Nobody sat down. Nobody spoke. Clara folded her hands behind her back.

"...Confirm it again."

A technician swallowed hard. "Chief Marune's resonance—" He hesitated. "—it can't be located anywhere in reality."

Another operator broke the quiet. "Chamber Twelve's cameras are gone. Nothing left to pull."

Clara nodded once. "Get every surviving recording. Every frame we can salvage."

An officer looked up. "...Sir. What about Chief Aldric?"

The room went quiet again. Several long seconds passed before anyone answered.

"He's not dead." Helden's voice carried complete certainty. "If Chief Aldric had died, the emergency archive would already know it."

Everyone in the room understood the weight behind that.

Every division-ranked officer — Chief and above — carried a soul-linked archive seal. Death triggered it instantly. Nothing had triggered.

Which meant somewhere, in some form, Aldric Marune still existed.

Back in the ruined courtyard—

Zekai stood still, one hand resting against the crystal pendant hidden inside his coat.

The tiny figure inside didn't move. He didn't need to. Zekai already knew — Aldric was watching.

The crimson interface had already gone dark. His body felt impossibly heavy all at once, knees threatening to buckle.

"...Tch."

Sharp pain exploded behind his eyes. The courtyard doubled in his vision, then slowly folded back into one image.

"So."

"So this is the price."

His breathing turned uneven, each heartbeat landing hard against his ribs.

Whatever the Fool just gave me — none of it came free.

A few containment officers approached, careful, none of them closing the distance all the way.

The veteran among them pulled off his helmet. "...He's exhausted."

Another shook his head. "No. Look at his eyes."

"He's still awake in there."

Nobody reached for a weapon. Nobody reached for restraints either. The silence had become heavier than any protocol could account for.

Footsteps echoed from the shattered corridor.

Sebastian emerged, one arm slung over another officer's shoulder, clothes soaked through with blood. Just standing looked like it cost him something. His eyes found Zekai anyway.

"...Everyone." His voice came out tired, but it still carried weight. "Stand down."

A few officers traded confused looks.

"Captain—"

"He's still the primary suspect."

"I know." Sebastian's eyes closed briefly. "He's also the reason any of us are still breathing."

Nobody argued that. Not after what they'd all just watched.

Medical teams rushed past toward the collapsed interrogation chamber, stretchers rolling over broken concrete. Barrier specialists started rebuilding fractured walls with layers of dark resonance, and section by section, the headquarters clicked back toward order with unsettling efficiency.

One thing stayed broken.

No amount of resonance was going to bring back what had actually been taken.

Chief Aldric Marune was gone.

A medic approached Zekai, cautious.

"We need to look at your injuries."

"No."

"You've lost too much blood."

"I'm fine."

"You are not fine."

Neither of them moved for a second. Then Sebastian let out a breath.

"He's right."

Zekai looked at him.

"If you collapse now," Sebastian said, "you're no use to anyone."

A long pause. Then Zekai sat. The motion alone drained something out of him.

A medic cleaned the wound across his forearm while another wrapped fresh bandages around his hand. Nobody tried to restrain him. Nobody even suggested it.

One young medic murmured while she worked.

"...Thank you."

He looked up. She gave him a weak smile.

"My brother works in Containment. He was in Chamber Twelve when it started." Her eyes dropped to her hands. "He made it out. I heard you protected Iris and Captain Sebastian too. So — thank you."

She went back to her work before he could say anything back.

He looked away.

"...I couldn't protect everyone." He hadn't meant to say it out loud. It came out anyway, quiet, before he could stop it.

Nobody answered. There wasn't anything to say to that.

The medic finished wrapping his forearm and stepped back. The courtyard held an unusual, heavy quiet.

Sebastian approached slowly, one hand pressed to his ribs. His eyes dropped to Zekai's coat.

"...The pendant."

Zekai reached into his pocket without hesitating.

The crystal sat quiet in his palm. Inside it, tiny Aldric stood with both hands folded behind his back, exactly as composed as he'd been the second before the seal closed around him.

Several officers nearby straightened on instinct.

"...Chief—" One voice trembled.

Another stepped closer without meaning to. "...Is he—"

Medical staff stopped mid-motion. Containment officers gathered around the crystal in a loose circle, none of them brave enough to touch it.

Even Iris, barely holding herself upright, stared at the pendant in silence.

"...Chief." Relief flooded her voice, barely above a whisper. "You're actually alive."

No response yet. Silence held the courtyard for five full seconds. Only the distant sound of reconstruction work drifted through the ruins.

Sebastian stepped closer, his good hand resting lightly against the crystal.

"...Chief?"

Nothing. Ten more seconds. Nobody breathed. Nobody moved a muscle.

Inside the pendant, the miniature Aldric opened his eyes.

He looked around at every face gathered above him, expression exactly as calm as it always was.

"...Good." His voice carried clearly out of the crystal despite the size of him. "I only have a few moments. The relic's still adapting to me."

"So everyone here — listen."

The whole courtyard froze solid. One officer nearly dropped his medical case.

"He — he's talking."

Another whispered, "...How is that even possible?"

Aldric ignored every reaction. His gaze locked onto Zekai.

"...Don't break the crystal."

"The prison isn't made of glass."

"It's made of law."

Silence. Zekai's brow furrowed. "Can I open it?"

"Yes." The answer came instantly. "But breaking it and opening it are two entirely different things."

Sebastian's expression sharpened. "...Explain."

"The crystal isn't a container. It's a localized dimensional seal." A brief pause. "Destroy the shell physically, and whatever's sealed inside gets erased along with it."

A chill ran through everyone standing there. One Containment officer took a step back on reflex.

Sebastian folded his arms slowly. "...So there's no conventional way to get you out."

"Correct." A single nod. "The Relic Collector doesn't imprison bodies."

"He imprisons existence."

Nobody said anything after that.

For the first time, every officer standing in that courtyard finally understood why Investigation Head Aldric Marune had vanished from every resonance scanner in the building.

He hadn't disappeared.

He'd been removed from reality—and sealed somewhere reality couldn't reach.

Far above Greyhaven, past the clouds—

The black helicopter cut through the sky toward an unknown point on the map.

Inside the cargo bay, the Relic Collector wiped blood from the corner of his mouth, unhurried.

The woman across from him sat with a smooth porcelain mask hiding her face, hands folded neatly in her lap.

"You failed."

"I completed my assignment."

"You lost that devil."

His eyes drifted to the empty pendant hanging off his belt.

"...Temporarily."

She said nothing.

"The boy," she finally added.

He closed his emerald eye. Opened it again.

"...He's changing faster than anyone accounted for."

Her head tilted slightly. "And?"

A faint smile crept back onto his face.

"...I'm looking forward to hunting him again."

The masked woman pressed a finger to a black communication device.

"The target has awakened."

A distorted voice answered without delay.

"...Confirmed. Proceed to phase two."

The line cut. Neither of them said another word.

Outside, the helicopter vanished into an endless stretch of cloud.

Far below, Greyhaven kept moving through an ordinary day. Cars crossed intersections. Kids walked to school. Coffee shops pulled up their shutters like any other morning.

Nobody looked twice toward the buried headquarters underneath their feet.

Nobody knew how close their world had just come to changing shape entirely.

And somewhere, well past the edge of anything reality was built to hold — something ancient and primordial opened one burning eye.
