Chapter 66 - At the Temple

Miles away, silence lay over Haneul's chambers.

The fire crackled softly beneath the ondol floor.

After days consumed by fever, her breathing had finally settled into something resembling a steady rhythm.

The momjong slept against one of the walls, overcome by exhaustion.

Then Haneul's fingers moved.

Her eyelids trembled.

She opened her eyes.

For several seconds, she had no idea where she was.

The wooden ceiling swam above her in a blur. She tried to draw a deep breath, but a sharp pain pierced her chest, forcing her eyes shut once more.

Memories returned in fragments.

Water.

Cold.

Darkness.

Arms around her.

And then…

a voice.

Haneul opened her eyes again.

Slowly, she turned her head.

The place beside her bed was empty.

And yet she remembered a hand holding hers.

A forehead resting against her fingers.

And words.

Words spoken by a man who had believed she could not hear them.

I never should have let you get so close to me.

Haneul held her breath.

For a moment, she wondered whether it had been nothing more than another fever dream.

But then another sentence emerged from the shadows of her memory.

But I never forgot you.

Her eyes filled with tears.

No.

It had not been a dream.

She remembered his voice.

The pauses between his words.

The way it had broken when he spoke of the Daesagan.

I was jealous.

Haneul closed her eyes.

Her heart began to pound with a force her weakened body could barely endure.

And then she remembered the last words.

If this is the punishment for loving you in silence… then I will accept it.

A single tear slipped slowly from the corner of her eye, tracing her temple before disappearing into her hair.

All this time, she had mistaken Kang-dae's distance for rejection.

She had endured his silences.

His coldness.

The way he avoided her gaze.

Now those few words forced her to look back on every memory through an entirely different light.

Slowly, she moved the hand he had held.

It was empty.

"Kang-dae…" she whispered.

The momjong woke with a start.

The instant she saw her mistress's open eyes, both hands flew to her mouth.

"My lady!"

She dropped to her knees beside the bed.

"You're awake! Thank the heavens!"

Haneul tried to sit up.

"Where is…?"

The words barely escaped her throat.

The servant hurried to arrange the blankets around her.

"Please don't move, my lady. You need to rest."

"Kang-dae…"

The momjong went still.

"The Bujang is with His Majesty."

Haneul frowned faintly.

"The King?"

"He has regained consciousness."

For a moment, the news displaced everything else.

Haneul tried once more to rise.

Pain stopped her almost immediately.

"I need to see him."

"You cannot, my lady."

"I need to know what he remembers."

The momjong shook her head firmly.

"And you will—when you can stand without collapsing."

Haneul slowly turned her face toward the empty place beside her bed.

She did not argue again.

But she could no longer silence the voice inside her memory.

Kang-dae believed his confession had been buried within a quiet room, spoken to a woman incapable of hearing him.

He was wrong.

Haneul had heard him.

Every word.

And for now…

she would tell no one.

Kang-dae stood beside the King's bed, reporting on the precarious military situation and the state of affairs within the palace.

Suddenly, the stillness of the night was disturbed by a growing commotion moving through the wooden corridors.

Hurried footsteps.

The voices of monks.

The metallic clatter of the outer guards' equipment.

Kang-dae immediately bowed before the sovereign.

"Your Majesty, I beg your pardon. I must determine the cause of the disturbance at the perimeter."

The King granted him leave.

Kang-dae hurried into the corridor.

The commotion was drawing closer.

Then the main gate to the courtyard was thrown open.

Beneath the entrance stood a figure Kang-dae recognized at once.

Daesagan Yi Jun-ho.

He looked as though he had ridden straight out of a battlefield.

His breathing was ragged. Dried blood stained his face, his robes were torn, and one hand remained clenched around the hilt of his sword as though his body had not yet understood that the fighting was over.

He had survived the ambush in the mountain pass.

Kang-dae immediately moved toward him.

By the time the Bujang reached the central courtyard, guards and attendants were already helping Jun-ho toward a chamber where he could rest.

Without losing his martial composure, Kang-dae issued an order.

"Fetch the temple physician immediately. Have the Daesagan's wounds examined without delay."

The attendants hurried to obey.

Kang-dae remained outside while the physician treated the young noble.

He stood upright in the corridor, his expression controlled, though concern gnawed beneath the surface.

Jun-ho's condition troubled him.

But so did the question of what could possibly have driven the Daesagan into the mountains wounded, bloodied, and pursued.

Minutes later, the door slid open.

The physician emerged and bowed respectfully before Kang-dae.

"The young lord will recover. His wounds do not appear to be deep, but he has lost blood and pushed himself far beyond exhaustion. He must rest before his body demands payment for the journey."

The physician glanced briefly toward the closed room.

"His youth and strength are in his favor. With proper rest, he should recover quickly."

Kang-dae gave a short nod.

The physician bowed again and withdrew.

Kang-dae then turned toward the eunuch waiting several paces away on the King's orders.

"Go with one of the monks to His Majesty's chambers. Tell him the Daesagan has arrived alive. Inform His Majesty that I will return shortly and present a full report once I know what happened."

The eunuch bowed.

"Yes, Bujang."

He departed down the corridor.

Kang-dae remained where he was.

Motionless.

Before the closed door.

On the other side lay the Daesagan.

Only a few corridors away, Haneul had just awakened.

And neither man yet understood that, sometime during that long night…

silence had ceased to protect them.
