The wind roared in Kang-dae's ears—but it was nothing compared to the thunder of his own blood.
He rode through the night like a vengeful spirit, driving his stallion past its limits until the beast's lungs threatened to burst. Behind him lay a broken oath and an abandoned post. Ahead… the only thing that gave his life meaning was being torn apart by the very men he once swore to protect.
When he reached the ridge overlooking the Han residence, his heart sank.
The courtyard crawled with soldiers.
Moonlight flashed against their armor—the insignia of the Office of Censorship.
They've taken her.
His vision blurred red with fury.
I'm too late.
He did not hesitate.
He did not think.
Kang-dae dismounted while the horse was still moving, landing in a full sprint—a shadow among shadows, a wolf descending upon unsuspecting prey. The guards at the perimeter never had time to scream before he struck them down with brutal precision, advancing toward the study with lethal focus.
Then—
The light inside vanished.
They're silencing her.
With a guttural roar, Kang-dae hurled his weight against the door. Wood splintered and burst open, revealing a room swallowed by darkness.
—"Haneul!"
No answer.
A presence moved to his left—tall, controlled, precise.
Steel rang.
—Clang!
The impact rattled through his bones. His blade had not met flesh—
But another sword.
—"Stand down, deserter."
The voice was calm. Cold. Infuriatingly noble.
Kang-dae did not listen.
He attacked again—brutal, relentless.
—"Let her go… or I'll paint these walls with your aristocratic blood!"
Jun-ho parried with refined precision. He lacked Kang-dae's raw force—but possessed the lethal elegance of a court-trained warrior.
In the darkness, their blades clashed—sparks flickering like dying stars, illuminating their faces for a fleeting instant:
Kang-dae—a storm of mud and fury.
Jun-ho—a statue of marble and resolve.
—"You speak of protection while breaking the King's peace?" Jun-ho countered. "You are not her savior. You are her execution."
—"I am the only one who knows what Lord Min is planning!"
Jun-ho shifted back, silk whispering against the floor.
—"And I am the only one keeping her father from the noose. Lower your blade before my men fill this room with arrows."
From the shadows of the archive shelves, Haneul watched—
the soldier who held her heart…
and the man who now holds her fate—
trying to kill each other in the dark.
The sound of their blades was the sound of her world collapsing.
Then—
Her voice broke through everything.
—"Stop!"
It was not the cry of a frightened lady.
It was authority.
Jun-ho lowered his sword instantly.
Kang-dae did not.
His final strike had already been released.
Steel cut the air—
—and tore across Jun-ho's chest.
A shallow wound.
But enough.
Jun-ho exhaled sharply, the sound of contained pain slicing through the silence.
Before Kang-dae could strike again—
Haneul moved.
She didn't step between them.
She threw herself forward—wrapping her arms around Jun-ho, pressing her body against his, shielding him completely.
His blood began to stain her robes.
She did not let go.
Kang-dae froze.
His sword trembled—
then slipped from his grasp, hitting the ground with a hollow metallic echo.
His eyes darkened.
The woman he had crossed the night for…
was protecting another man.
—"Haneul…" he whispered, his voice breaking.
Jun-ho, breath unsteady, met Kang-dae's gaze.
No longer with disdain—
But with bitter understanding.
—"He is not who you think," Haneul said, her voice trembling against Jun-ho's shoulder.
"If you kill him… You kill us all."
Kang-dae stepped back.
The ground beneath him vanished.
He had abandoned his post.
Ridden through the night.
Risked his life—
only to find that the place he believed he held in Haneul's world…
now belonged to another man.
End of Chapter
In the silence that followed—
No swords clashed.
No orders were given.
But something far more dangerous had been broken.
A warrior's certainty.
A woman's heart.
And the fragile balance between power… and survival.
Outside, the soldiers of the Crown were already closing in.
Inside—
Three lives stood on the edge of a choice that would change everything.
And none of them yet understood…
that this was not the moment they would fall—
But the moment they would be forced to choose
who they were willing to destroy to survive.
