Chapter 64 - Chapter 64: A Peculiar Work

Inside a room in Furan's house, she was using her Hand of Telekinesis to throw coal into a simple furnace built beneath a water tank.

After throwing in a certain amount, she focused her gaze on the exhaust port.

As time passed, a rapid roar finally erupted, followed by a puff of white mist.

A surge of joy rose in Furan's heart; it seemed there were no issues with this part she had made.

Using her Hand of Telekinesis, she closed the exhaust port specifically designed to test airtightness and opened the valve switch.

The rapid roar went silent in an instant, and Furan's eyes remained fixed on the cylinder.

Suddenly, the connecting rod attached to the piston began to move, tracing a semicircle in the air and driving the flywheel to rotate.

But because the flywheel Furan had custom-ordered was quite heavy, the rod's rotational speed wasn't very fast yet, requiring some time to accelerate.

When the rod reached the bottom of its arc, the cylinder emitted a puff of white steam, and the rod struck the reversing valve, changing the direction of the steam flow within the cylinder.

Then, the rod was empowered once more, maintaining its original direction of rotation as its speed suddenly increased significantly.

The rod rose to the top of the arc again, another puff of steam was released, and the flywheel completed a full rotation.

With the inertia of the rotation, the flywheel kept the rod moving in the same direction, beginning a cycle of the previous movements with kinetic energy.

Driven by the steam, each cycle grew faster, and the intervals between the roars gradually shortened.

Finally, the entire steam engine erupted into a continuous roar with almost indistinguishable intervals, and the flywheel spun at an extremely high speed.

Furan sat up on the floor and sighed with emotion:

"That wasn't easy!"

Then, she felt that mysterious power surge through her body again, just like when she killed Richter, before it vanished once more.

She knew that she had verified the future once again.

Several prompts appeared in her mind.

[You have completed another future you foresaw. Star Gazing Technique proficiency +200.]

[Star Gazing Technique (Mastery) (Proficiency: 387/1000)]

Furan raised an eyebrow. The Star Gazing Technique was a Spell that had helped her a lot, and she had always wanted to grind its proficiency, but it had yielded no results at all.

Observing her current location no longer granted proficiency after the first time; now, Furan only occasionally gained a bit of proficiency by looking at the stars every day.

So for the Star Gazing Technique, she could only leave it in her skills column and wait for it to increase slowly.

There were other prompts she hadn't looked at yet. She dismissed the Star Gazing Technique prompt in her mind, and the next one surfaced.

[You have created something that has never been made before. At the same time, it possesses immense potential and room for development. It has proven that your level in Metallurgy far exceeds others. Metallurgy proficiency +11,000.]

"How... how much?"

Furan's eyes widened. She counted the zeros following the proficiency increase and was pleasantly surprised to find it was a five-digit number.

"Jackpot!"

She had expected that finishing the steam engine would grant her a large amount of proficiency, perhaps bringing her Metallurgy directly to the Mastery level, but she hadn't expected it to add this much!

She had discovered before that the increase in proficiency was measured based on the magnitude of the task completed.

For example, if you learned a Fireball Spell and just cast it once, it would only add one point. But if you used that inconspicuous Fireball Spell to kill a terrifying enemy, the final value being a hundred times the former would be considered low.

That was why her Metallurgy had increased so rapidly when she attended Harbos's weapon forging class; because Harbos's level was high, the proficiency granted was also substantial.

"In that case... my Metallurgy has reached the extraordinary level, and maybe that previous trait has changed as well."

Furan silently summoned her status panel.

[Name: Furan

Profession: Apothecary (Half-star), Rune Warrior (Half-star), Artisan (Half-star)

Attributes: constitution 2.8, Spirit 3.1

Skills: Metallurgy (extraordinary) (Proficiency: 534/100,000): You have few rivals left in this field... (omitted)

Trait: Skilled Craftsman (Weapons and equipment made by your hands seem to be more powerful.)

... (omitted)]

First of all, the Magic Craftsman in her professions had upgraded, losing its prefix to become simply Artisan.

This likely meant the scope of her profession had changed, becoming more extensive.

Regardless, an upgrade was a good thing; what did a name change for a profession matter?

Then, the Artisan profession increased her Spirit by 0.3, finally breaking past three points. This meant that the value of her Spiritual Power increases in the future would be 0.3 higher.

Only then did she suddenly realize that the Spiritual Power trait was practically a god-tier late-game skill—pure stat increases with almost no side effects... She wondered if she could get a few more like it.

Then there was this new trait. Furan tested it slightly and found that it seemed similar to the Apothecary one.

Although it wasn't mentioned in the description, it indeed required her to consume Spiritual Power to enhance weapons and equipment.

Furan picked up an energy potion nearby and drank it. The process of making the steam engine had made her clearly realize why energy potions were so popular.

After a single sip, she felt her whole body filled with strength—the solid kind that lasted for quite a while. As long as she didn't overuse it, there would be no lingering side effects.

Precisely because of this effect, in the currently chaotic potion market, the price had soared to 60 silver coins a bottle. Fortunately, she could still buy the materials, which had only risen to ten silver coins per set, to make them herself.

What she had to do next wasn't over yet; she still needed to practice the Appliance Enchantment Spell. Taking advantage of her brain's excitement and having just drunk an energy potion, she hurried to do it.

Following the contents of her notes, she concentrated and etched the rapidly running steam engine before her into her mind.

The steam engine was fast, continuously spitting out white mist that filled the entire room.

Only then did Furan realize that her room didn't seem to have a ventilation system. Consequently, even though the windows were open, the cooled water vapor just wouldn't dissipate.

This left Furan's vision a complete white blur, with quite low visibility.

Furthermore, the temperature in the room was rising rapidly, though Furan's constitution could still withstand it.

However, the priority was to practice this Spell to the introductory level and then quickly shut down the steam engine.

She worked hard to manifest the Spell structure she had memorized, and once she was sure it was correct, she began her attempt.

However, the steam leaked within her mind; she seemed to have failed to maintain the airtightness.

A puff of white vapor escaped from her mouth, and her lips felt a burning heat, forcing her to stop and take two deep breaths to recover.

Although she failed, her eyes were full of joy, because this meant she was now able to practice this Spell.

[You have made a failed attempt. Appliance Enchantment Spell proficiency +1.]

Before, she couldn't even cast this Spell, but now she could finally start grinding its proficiency.

But before she could prepare for another attempt, a voice appeared in the room.

"A peculiar work, to think it could actually allow you to cast this Spell!"
