Chapter 174 - The Night That Ignited the Conflict

Lusian ordered a camp to be set up before nightfall.

The professional soldiers acted first, marking the perimeter with impeccable discipline. They raised defenses, organized guard shifts, and secured the access points to the nearby ruins.

The civilians, under supervision, began setting up improvised tents and campfires. Although there was fatigue and tension, the overall order was maintained thanks to the military structure guiding them.

When darkness fully fell, the camp had already been established. The light from the campfires spread like small warm points within an environment that was still dangerous.

Lusian was inside his tent, mentally reviewing the guard shifts, when he prepared to leave to supervise the change of watch.

But before he could do so, the entrance was suddenly thrown open.

Emily walked in without announcing herself.

The atmosphere changed immediately.

It was not just her presence. It was the accumulated tension between them over the past days, from avoided glances, unspoken words, and decisions neither of them wanted to face directly.

Emily looked at him without breaking eye contact, with a mixture of frustration, need, and something harder to name. Lusian, for his part, remained still for a moment, aware that any reaction could make the situation worse.

She took a step toward him. Then another.

The distance between them shrank until it became uncomfortable. The air inside the tent felt heavier, as if the space were too small for what was happening.

There were no shouts. No clear declarations. Only a short exchange, filled with contained emotions that had been left unresolved for too long.

What happened afterward did not go unnoticed. Every breath, every murmur, seeped through the canvas—a silent message that was impossible to ignore. It was not coincidence, not random passion: it was warning… declaration… provocation.

Emily made sure that her voice, her breaths, and her murmurs could be heard beyond the tent. It was not accidental. It was a message.

Princess Elizabeth, whose tent was next to the security sector, paused her reading upon hearing the echo of those sounds. She remained silent for a moment. She said nothing. She did not move.

She simply closed the book calmly… and took a deep breath, maintaining her composure. It was not something she should be thinking about.

Alejandro, from his own sector of the camp, had clearly seen when Emily entered Lusian's tent. He stayed awake until late at night, his gaze fixed on that single silhouette, waiting to see her come out. But the night went on… and she did not.

When dawn broke, Emily finally left Lusian's tent. She walked with an odd calmness, with a serene and difficult-to-read expression, as if nothing that had happened weighed on her face.

Alejandro felt something in his chest tighten sharply.

He clenched his fists until his knuckles turned white.

The conflict, once silent, had just turned into an open war.
