Chapter 17 - Hunger for Powers

Night.

The academy lights float like artificial constellations.

Aruford stands alone in the outer courtyard.

Wind moves through the suspended bridges.

He replays the duel.

Not the victory.

The moment.

That half-second.

When gravity stopped.

When Rhyz's Astrite collapsed.

When the system failed to record.

He whispers to himself:

"…It wasn't enough."

His Astrite core rotates slowly inside his soul.

Current stable count: 13.0

True accessible reserve: fluctuating.

But that isn't what bothers him.

It's the feeling.

During the silence—

He felt something open.

Not power.

Permission.

And that disturbed him.

Memory Fragment

A faint echo surfaces in his mind.

Not words.

Not a face.

Just pressure.

Something ancient.

Watching.

Approving.

He clenches his fist.

"I won."

Yet why did it feel like being evaluated?

Aria Finds Him

"You're thinking too loudly."

Aruford doesn't turn.

"You followed me."

"You walked like someone who didn't enjoy winning."

Silence.

She steps beside him.

"The nobles are furious, by the way."

"I noticed."

"They won't challenge you again soon."

"That's unfortunate."

She looks at him sharply.

"…Unfortunate?"

"I need stronger opponents."

There it is.

Not anger.

Not ambition.

Hunger.

Aria studies him carefully.

"You don't want status."

"No."

"You don't want validation."

"No."

"…You want power."

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No shame.

Just fact.

She exhales slowly.

"That kind of desire usually breaks people."

Aruford's voice softens slightly.

"I was looked down upon once."

She waits.

He rarely speaks about before.

"I don't intend for it to happen again."

Aria doesn't mock him.

Doesn't judge.

She just asks:

"At what point does it stop?"

He doesn't answer.

Because he doesn't know.

Later.

Alone in his room.

He sits cross-legged.

Astrites circulate through his soul.

Effector hums faintly.

He tries to increase output deliberately.

It responds faster than before.

Chosen One skill pulses subtly.

Astrite absorption efficiency: rising.

His stats increase slightly without effort.

And that scares him.

"…Am I chasing power…"

He opens his eyes.

"…or is power chasing me?"

For a brief second—

His reflection in the window shifts.

Not visibly.

But conceptually.

As if layered behind him stands something taller.

Wider.

Watching through him.

He closes his eyes again.

Breath steady.

"Control."

He repeats it quietly.

"Control."

Elsewhere.

High above the academy.

One of the silent observers speaks for the first time.

"He felt it."

Another replies:

"Yes."

"Is he ready?"

"No."

Pause.

"But he will be."

Aruford lies down.

Sleep comes slowly.

And in his dreams—

He stands in a place between structures.

Between Vigor layers.

A dragon's distant echo reverberates.

And a voice—not spoken, not heard—brushes against his soul:

"Grow."

He wakes instantly.

Astrite count has increased.

13.0 → 14.2

Without training.

Without combat.

Just desire.

He sits upright in the darkness.

For the first time—

He wonders:

If he kills the gods one day…

Will it be justice?

Or appetite?

Announcement echoes through the halls of the Continental Arcane Convergence Academy.

"First-Year Realm Expedition."

Portal Sector: V-17

Classification: Controlled Aethur Fragment

Threat Range: Astrite 18 – 40

Survival Probability (Ungrouped): 32%

The hall goes silent.

Even the nobles look tense.

40 Astrite.

That's nearly double Rhyz's peak.

And that's labeled low-level beasts.

Therion stands before the portal chamber.

A circular gate rotates with layered glyphs.

"This fragment exists inside a minor 5D Aethur."

"You will encounter beasts formed from condensed astrite accumulation."

"No instructor will interfere unless death becomes certain."

Aria glances sideways.

"…Comforting."

Aruford watches the portal.

It hums differently than the pressure chamber.

Alive.

Students are grouped in teams of five.

Aruford's team:

Aria (Astrite 16.8)

Rhyz (23.7 — visibly annoyed but pragmatic)

Liora Sen (Support caster — 19.2)

Teren Vox (Defensive specialist — 21.5)

Aruford (Publicly registered: 14.2)

Rhyz looks at Kael briefly.

"This isn't a duel."

"I know."

"If you destabilize formation, I'll remove you."

Aruford nods calmly.

"Understood."

Aria mutters:

"This is going to be exhausting."

They step through.

Instant pressure shift.

The sky is fractured violet.

Landmass floats in broken shards.

Gravity inconsistent.

Astrite density is thick in the air.

Liora whispers:

"…Ambient level is 3x academy baseline."

Teren tightens his grip.

"Movement minimal. Stay close."

First Contact — Astrite 22

A four-legged crystalline beast emerges from a broken ridge.

Body pulsing with astrite veins.

Display sigil activates.

Astrite Count: 22.4

Rhyz steps forward.

"Standard formation."

Gravity compresses the beast's limbs.

Aria launches a narrow astral blade.

Clean execution.

Beast collapses.

Its astrite disperses into the air like luminous mist.

And flows into their souls.

Aruford feels it enter.

His core absorbs efficiently.

14.2 → 14.8

Small.

But smoother than before.

Chosen One pulses faintly.

They advance.

Pressure increases.

Terrain fractures more violently.

Second beast appears.

Serpentine.

Distorting space slightly.

Astrite Count: 31.6

Teren activates barrier.

The serpent strikes.

Barrier cracks instantly.

"Stronger than expected!"

Rhyz increases output to 24.

Aria engages flank.

The battle lasts longer.

Coordination necessary.

Aruford observes patterns.

Waits.

Then moves when opening appears.

Single precise strike to exposed core.

Beast implodes.

Astrite flows.

Aruford absorbs again.

14.8 → 16.1

Rhyz notices.

"…Your absorption rate is abnormal."

Kael doesn't respond.

The ground trembles.

Sky fractures above them.

Liora's voice shakes.

"There's something above 35 nearby."

They crest a floating ridge.

And see it.

Massive.

Six-limbed.

Body made of compressed astrite stone.

Space bends around it.

Sigil activates.

Astrite Count: 39.8

Silence.

Even Rhyz swallows slightly.

"Fallback formation."

The beast roars.

Sound distorts gravity waves.

Aria nearly loses footing.

Rhyz pushes to 25 Astrite output.

Still insufficient to suppress fully.

Teren's barrier shatters on second impact.

Liora is thrown back.

Formation breaks.

For a moment—

Aruford feels it again.

That opening.

That internal permission.

If he releases more—

He could end it quickly.

His Astrite surges internally.

16.1 → 18.9 → 21.3

Rhyz sees it.

"…You were hiding."

The beast charges.

Aria is directly in its path.

Time slows slightly.

Aruford steps forward.

He doesn't explode outward.

He compresses inward.

Effector amplifies all stats.

Astrite spikes.

21.3 → 24.7 → 27.2

He meets the beast head-on.

Palm against its core.

For half a second—

The world goes silent again.

No gravity.

No distortion.

Just stillness.

Then—

The 39.8 Astrite beast collapses instantly.

Not shattered.

Not cut.

Simply deconstructed.

Astrite disperses violently.

Most flows into the team.

But the largest portion—

Flows into Aruford.

27.2 → 31.9

The air stabilizes.

Rhyz stares.

"…That was almost 40."

Aria breathes heavily.

"You didn't hesitate."

Aruford looks at his hands.

No tremor.

No guilt.

Only clarity.

And deeper hunger.

Aftermath

Portal extraction activates.

Back in the academy chamber.

Monitoring arrays review logs.

There is a problem.

During the moment of deconstruction—

Measurement arrays briefly glitched.

Again.

Therion watches the recording carefully.

"He didn't overpower it."

A researcher whispers:

"He removed its structural integrity."

Therion nods slowly.

"Yes."

Aruford stands alone after debrief.

Astrite Count: 31.9

He crossed 30 in a single expedition.

Without visible strain.

He closes his eyes.

The hunger is quieter now.

Satisfied.

For the moment.

But deeper within—

Something ancient stirs more noticeably.

Not awake.

But aware.
