"It's snowing?!"
"The King turned into a snow monster!"
"It's so cold…"
At this moment, the civilians were completely at a loss. They had no idea what they were supposed to do. Today was supposed to be the only time in their lives they would ever be noticed, yet now they had suddenly become irrelevant.
Of course, that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. What had originally been a situation where one of their siblings had to die had now turned into an uncertain outcome.
Boom!!
Another violent crash rang out. A large section of a five-story building nearby suddenly collapsed, and many people fell from above.
When they hit the ground, there was no reaction at all. Not even blood flowed out. Several of them even bounced slightly.
When a body is frozen but not completely assimilated with the ice, falling heavily onto the ground can actually make it somewhat elastic.
A few of the gorgeously dressed frozen corpses even bounced and slid right in front of the civilians.
The nobles… were dead?
"To keep them from screaming and running around, I let them die quietly… I'm really a kind person."
After cleaning out all the nobles, Vane smashed a corner of this somewhat sinful building and made a rather flashy entrance.
"What are you staring at me for? The nobles are all dead. The future of Twin Islands is up to you Twin Islanders. Whether you continue the previous bloody policy or bury the nobles' rotten customs in the grave, I won't interfere."
Having wiped out ninety percent of the nobles on this island who supported the bloody policy and then killed the King, if they still couldn't rise up and resist, Vane had no intention of caring about what happened next. The Revolutionary Army would only support people who had the will to resist. Those who only wanted to remain obedient subjects would always be placed last—otherwise, the work simply couldn't proceed.
"W-What do you mean?"
"The nobles are all dead? We don't have to listen to them anymore?"
"I don't have to kill my family! Long live!"
"But the King is still here. The King is a powerful snow monster—he's unbeatable!"
Vane looked toward the King, who was entangled by Daz Bonez. After finding the Gold-Gold Fruit in the treasury, Vane had assumed the Snow-Snow Fruit wasn't here. He hadn't expected that it wasn't missing—it had simply been eaten.
"I know who you are—the recently active Rocket Team Pirates! I never expected you to sneak into my kingdom! Don't think killing those foolish people will let you overturn my rule!"
The King had recalled Vane's identity. He felt nothing about the nobles being killed—he even thought Vane had helped him consolidate the resources that had been in their hands.
"Pretty arrogant. People who've never seen a real powerhouse are always like this."
The King showed no fear. He transformed into a blizzard and briefly rose into the air.
"I am an immortal Logia user! I wield the power of nature itself—you can't kill me!"
Wind and snow enveloped the entire area. The civilians, who had just begun to feel a glimmer of hope, shrank into huddled groups in terror at this dreadful power.
Many Logia abilities are linked to natural disasters in the real world. Even a relatively weaker Logia like the Snow-Snow Fruit was, in the eyes of ordinary people, a kind of calamity.
Faced with a natural disaster, ordinary people could only cling together and tremble.
"Lowly creatures! You'll never turn your fate around! You were born to be enslaved by the noble royal family!"
Whoosh!!!
The King was reveling in his triumph when suddenly his vision blurred. An attack passed straight through his body.
"It's useless! I—I am… I…"
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a single red snowflake—then countless red snowflakes.
Soon, he realized he could no longer control the blizzard raging in the sky. His body went limp, falling from the air.
When he hit the ground, there was no elemental transformation—just the sound of flesh striking earth.
His limbs and body began shifting from snowflakes back into solid flesh.
His ability was disappearing!!
"N-No… im…possible…"
He was a mighty, invincible Logia user—how could he be killed by a rookie pirate in the first half of the Grand Line?!
Haki… Haki!
The King died with his eyes wide open. Having ruled the Twin Kingdom for many years, he hadn't even had the chance to pass the Gold-Gold Fruit down to his successor before dying so suddenly.
Perhaps it was better this way. If he had known the Gold-Gold Fruit had already been stolen, wouldn't he have died of anger?
"Too comfortable in the first half of the Grand Line for too long. Trash King."
After landing, Vane sheathed his Cursed Sword. When killing the King, he hadn't even let the blade absorb his blood. He had simply coated the tip with Armament Haki and pierced the man's heart.
"Coating the entire Cursed Sword with Armament Haki shouldn't be too far off."
Vane's control over Armament Haki had grown increasingly proficient. For now, he could only coat a small portion of the blade. But fully enveloping it in Armament Haki and turning it into a Black Blade didn't seem far away.
For a swordsman who had mastered Armament Haki, that process wasn't distant… The scene at Dressrosa, where a large number of Marines were using full-body Armament Haki to resist the Birdcage, made the concept of a Black Blade feel almost ironic.
"All you scraps—the King's dead. If you don't want to go back to the old days, work for it yourselves!"
Daz Bonez gathered a large pile of keys from the Kingdom Army and threw them into the crowd.
Some of the shackled people fumbled frantically to unlock themselves.
Vane wouldn't concern himself with what they did next. Whether they could rise or not depended on them. A royal family could be replaced—that much was evident from how the Drum Kingdom had become the Sakura Kingdom.
The crime of killing the King would fall on Vane's head. As long as the newly rising leader had no connection to Vane and was willing to maintain a kingdom under royal rule, the World Government would most likely agree.
"As long as they choose a new King who hates the bloody policy, their situation can change."
Changing such a brutal policy involved many factors.
Without it, the population of the Twin Kingdom would easily overflow. If the land couldn't support so many people, then they would have to set sail and let some leave.
"But that's not our concern. We're pirates wanted by the Marines—looting is our priority."
With most of the nobles dead and the civilians freed, Crown City descended into complete chaos.
The conservative Kingdom Army attempted to suppress the civilians, but they were quickly routed by a fire dragon descending from the sky.
There was also a monster that shot lightning everywhere it went.
"The Rocket Team Pirates killed the King and all the nobles!"
"The Rocket Team Pirates are looting all across Crown City!"
"All the wealth of Crown City has been plundered by the Rocket Team Pirates!"
...
A few days later, in an office at Marine Headquarters.
Bang!
"What is going on?! The entire royal family of the Twin Kingdom—and all the nobles, hundreds of them—were all killed by the Rocket Team Pirates?!!"
In reality, only two-thirds had been killed by Vane. Another third of the conservative nobles died during the civilian uprising, along with a small portion at the hands of reformist nobles.
But such a "glorious" deed naturally had to be shouldered by the Rocket Team Pirates.
