Chapter 6 - "Too Tangled to Let Go”

"Do you love her?"

Miyo's voice cuts through the silence—

sharp, trembling with rage and something dangerously close to breaking.

Kaito doesn't answer.

"Miyo—"

"Answer me!" she snaps, stepping closer, her hands clenched.

"Do you love her, Kaito?"

This time, it isn't just anger.

It's desperation.

Her voice cracks, betraying everything she's trying to hold back.

"Just tell me…"

A pause.

Heavy.

Unbearable.

"Please."

The last word comes out softer—

almost a plea.

"It doesn't matter… whether it's love or not."

Kaito's voice is steady—

too steady.

"Even if it is… you shouldn't care."

A brief pause.

"Because you never did before."

The words land quietly,

but they carry weight.

His gaze hardens just slightly.

"On our wedding night…"

He exhales, a bitter edge slipping through.

"You left me there—"

"to go meet the man you actually loved."

Silence.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

"Did I say anything?"

His eyes meet hers.

"Did I stop you?"

Another pause.

"No."

His voice lowers.

"Because love isn't something you can force."

The air between them tightens.

"It's an open marriage, Miyo."

Final.

Cold.

"So let it be."

I didn't care… you're right."

Miyo lets out a shaky breath, her voice trembling.

"I never did."

A bitter smile flickers through her tears.

"I've been cruel from the start."

Her gaze drops for a second—

then lifts back to him.

"But you said you'd stay."

Soft.

Fragile.

"Didn't you…?"

A pause hangs between them.

"Even if it's an open marriage… I accepted that."

"I agreed to it."

Her fingers tighten slightly, as if grounding herself.

"But, Kaito…"

Her voice cracks again.

"I've seen you with other women."

There's no anger in her tone now.

Just something heavier.

"And it never felt like love."

A breath.

"Just… emptiness."

Her eyes search his—

desperate, afraid.

"But with her…"

The words almost don't come out.

"It felt different."

Silence.

Thick.

Unforgiving.

"Like you've fallen for her."

Kaito stands there—

almost stunned.

It's heartbreaking.

Because in that moment—

she finally sees it.

The emotion in his eyes.

The desperation.

The love…

that he had always carried for her.

From the very beginning.

And yet—

she had never noticed.

Or maybe…

she chose not to.

As if she had willingly blinded herself,

refusing to acknowledge what he felt.

To her—

he was just someone she could rely on.

Someone constant.

Someone she never wanted to lose.

But never someone she truly loved.

And for him—

that was never enough.

He thought…

if he accepted it—

if he kept the marriage open—

if he drifted from one meaningless connection to another—

he could forget her.

Forget the pain.

Forget the longing.

But it never faded.

It only grew.

Burning—

quietly,

relentlessly,

inside him.

Miyo breaks.

Right in front of him—

like everything she's been holding together finally gives in.

"…Is this the end?"

Her voice trembles, barely audible.

"Are you… going to leave me, Kaito?"

She looks at him like she already knows the answer—

and is afraid of it.

"We were just… open marriage partners, right?"

A broken laugh escapes her.

"I know… it's my fault."

Her hands shake as she presses them against her chest.

"Then why does it hurt so much?"

Her voice cracks.

"I never… felt anything for you."

A pause—

as if even she doesn't believe her own words.

"Then why… does it feel like this?"

Tears stream down freely now.

"Why does it feel like something is ripping me apart?"

Her breath turns uneven.

"Why won't my heart let you go…"

The words fall apart.

"…when I can't even love you?"

Silence swallows everything.

Then—

"Damn it…"

A whisper.

Broken.

And she collapses into herself—

unable to hold it in any longer.

"I'm terrible… aren't I?"

Miyo's voice shakes as the words spill out.

"As your wife… as your friend… as everything I was ever supposed to be to you…"

She lets out a broken breath, her hands trembling.

"I didn't handle anything right."

Her eyes drop, unable to meet his.

"I leaked that footage…"

The confession falls heavy between them.

"It was stupid… impulsive… I wasn't even thinking straight, Kaito…"

Her voice cracks completely now.

"I'm sorry…"

Tears stream down her face.

"I never wanted to ruin things like this between us."

A pause.

Painful.

"You're… one of the most precious people in my life."

Her lips tremble.

"The one I never wanted to lose."

Her body sways slightly, like she can't hold herself together anymore.

"Then why…"

She presses her hand against her chest, gasping softly.

"Why does it feel like I'm losing you now?"

Her breathing turns uneven.

"Is it because I pushed you too far…?"

"Because I kept you at a distance for so long…?"

She looks at him—

broken, searching, desperate for an answer she doesn't understand herself.

And this time—

there's nothing left in her.

No anger.

No pride.

Just fear.

Of losing him.

She breaks.

Completely.

Like everything inside her has finally given way.

"Don't…"

Her voice trembles as she stumbles toward him, clutching his shirt—

desperate.

"Don't let go… please."

Her hands shake violently, her breath uneven.

"I won't be okay if you leave…"

Tears blur her vision.

"Is it because I pushed you away…?"

"Because I never gave you enough…?"

Her fingers slip—

gripping, then losing hold—

like she doesn't even know what she's doing anymore.

And in that moment of unraveling—

she starts pulling at herself,

at the fabric between them,

like she's trying to tear down every distance she ever created.

"Then take it—" her voice cracks,

"whatever I never gave you…"

There's nothing seductive in it.

Nothing controlled.

Only desperation.

Only fear.

She leans into him, pressing a broken kiss against his lips—

not out of want,

but panic.

"You were attracted to her… right?" she sobs

"I know I don't have the right to ask…"

A hollow breath escapes her.

"I'm terrible…"

Her hands fall weakly against him now.

"I pushed you away…"

"And now I can't even bear losing you…"

She collapses against him—

completely undone.

Kaito pulls away from the kiss—

breathing uneven.

Before anything else—

he reaches for the sheets and wraps them around her, covering her gently.

"Idiot…"

His voice comes out strained.

"Do you really think so little of me?"

He looks at her—

hurt flickering clearly in his eyes.

"That I would stay… because of this?"

His breath hitches as he shakes his head.

"It's not about this."

"Never was."

His voice softens, but the pain doesn't leave.

"You don't have to do this."

"Not for me."

"Not to make me stay."

A pause.

Then he exhales sharply, pulling her into his arms—

holding her close.

"You idiot…"

This time, it's quieter.

Softer.

"Don't cry."

He cups her face gently—

lifting it just enough so she has to look at him.

"I'm not going anywhere."

His voice is low.

Certain.

"You don't have to do anything to make me stay."

His thumb brushes lightly against her tear-streaked cheek.

A pause.

Then—

"About that night…"

He hesitates for a fraction of a second.

"…I'm sorry."

The words are quiet.

Careful.

Even when he knows—

he doesn't owe that apology.

Even when he knows—

this was the life they both agreed to.

An open marriage.

No questions.

No claims.

No rights.

And yet—

he says it anyway.

Because right now,

logic doesn't matter.

Being right doesn't matter.

All that matters—

is her.

So he puts everything else aside,

and holds her a little closer.

He gently caresses her hair—

a quiet, comforting gesture.

But inside—

something in him is breaking apart.

Because she still doesn't understand.

Not his love.

Not him.

That he would never stay for something as fleeting as intimacy.

That he could never be held by something so shallow.

And yet—

that's what she believes.

That he was drawn to Erika because of that night.

Because of a moment.

Because of closeness.

But it wasn't that.

Not even close.

What happened with Erika—

was never about desire.

It was something far more dangerous.

Because in her desperation,

in the way she was breaking apart—

he saw something familiar.

Something he had buried for so long.

The same pain.

The same helplessness.

The same quiet ache he once felt—

watching Miyo love someone else.

And without realizing it—

that recognition,

that shared emptiness,

pulled him toward her.

Not as a replacement.

Not as an escape.

But as a reflection

of everything he had never healed from.

There's so much he wants to say.

So much—

that it almost slips out.

I'm willing to lose everything…

Just say it, Miyo.

Tell me to stay.

Tell me to love you—

and I'd lose everything…

just to be loved by you.

The words rise to his lips—

aching to be spoken.

But he stops.

Swallows them back.

And lets them remain where they've always been—

unheard.

Because some truths—

once said—

change everything.

"Our love was never black and white—just tangled strings of two stubborn hearts that refused to let go."
