Emma woke on her fifty ninth birthday to Daniel bringing her breakfast in bed.
Her son was twenty four now, working as a marine conservation researcher. He had inherited her determination but channeled it toward protecting ocean ecosystems rather than helping domestic violence survivors. Still meaningful work. Still changing the world in his own way.
"Happy birthday, Mom," Daniel said, setting down a tray with scrambled eggs and coffee. "Lily is making your cake. Fair warning, she is being very secretive about ingredients. There is a possibility it might be inedible."
Emma laughed. Lily was now twenty one, in law school, doing exactly what she had said she wanted to do at age five. Advocating for domestic violence survivors. She had interned at the Sterling Foundation for two summers and was now working toward her goal of becoming a civil rights attorney specializing in family law.
