Chapter 55 - SEASON 3 Chapter 64: The NICU Marathon

Three weeks into Daniel's NICU stay, Emma had established a routine that kept her sane.

Wake at 6 AM. Pump breast milk—fifteen minutes of mechanical extraction that felt nothing like nursing a baby but was the only way Emma could contribute to Daniel's nutrition. Shower carefully, avoiding getting the surgical incision wet even though it was healing well. Drive to the hospital by 7:30.

Arrive at the NICU for morning rounds at 8 AM. Listen to Dr. Patel review Daniel's overnight vitals, his weight gain—agonizingly slow at two ounces per week—his respiratory status, his feedings through a nasogastric tube.

Hold Daniel for kangaroo care from 9 to 11. Two hours of skin-to-skin contact, feeling his tiny body against her chest, watching monitors, praying his oxygen saturation stayed stable.
