Chapter 129 - Life Rarely Goes Exactly as Planned

At first, from Pidgeotto's description, Chen Mo thought it was just an ordinary shiny Butterfree. He hadn't expected the one appearing before them to be entirely pink.

Seeing the pink Butterfree stirred some long-dormant memories in Chen Mo's mind.

In the original Pokémon story, one of the destined protagonists, Ash, caught his first Pokémon—a Caterpie—when he began his journey that would last more than twenty years.

Because Caterpie naturally grows very quickly, the one Ash captured evolved to its final form—Butterfree—in a very short time.

When Chen Mo first watched that part of the story long ago, he had naively thought Butterfree would always stay with Ash and witness him becoming a Pokémon Master.

But not long after, Ash released Butterfree, letting it go pursue its own love.

And the female Butterfree that "stole away" Ash's Butterfree just happened to be a pink Butterfree.

Chen Mo glanced at the normal Butterfree working busily among the flowers, then looked again at the pink Butterfree that had turned its head toward them.

This familiar pairing…

Considering that Pokémon had all come from another world, Chen Mo suddenly had the urge to ask them whether they knew a boy named Ash, who always traveled with a Pikachu.

However, someone was clearly more anxious than Chen Mo.

The moment the pink Butterfree looked toward them, Ah Hui had already stepped forward.

"Mii…"

Watching the human approach with heavy steps, confusion grew in the pink Butterfree's pale red compound eyes.

Ah Hui didn't notice.

But after using the Eye of Detection to check the pink Butterfree's emotional state, Chen Mo immediately realized something.

Before he could speak, Ah Hui suddenly bowed deeply toward the Butterfree and shouted:

"I'm sorry!"

His voice was loud.

The pink Butterfree looked completely bewildered, while the Butterfree that had been gathering nectar in the flower field quickly flew over after hearing the shout.

Classic Ah Hui…

Chen Mo shook his head.

He quickly grabbed Ah Hui, stopping the long confession Ah Hui was clearly about to begin.

Ah Hui looked utterly confused, as if saying:

Mo-ge, why are you stopping me? I already prepared my speech!

"Ah Hui," Chen Mo said slowly, "have you thought about something?"

"A pink Butterfree should be pretty eye-catching, right? Among the Butterfree that attacked you that night—was there one that looked like this?"

"Hmm…"

Ah Hui frowned, trying hard to remember.

"Well… Mo-ge, when the Butterfree attacked, it was already dark. Everything was chaotic… I don't remember clearly."

"Forget it. Pretend I didn't ask."

Chen Mo turned and addressed the two Butterfree directly.

"Sorry to ask this, but… are you this Caterpie's parents?"

With Pikachu translating, Chen Mo soon received the answer.

"…We got it wrong?"

Ah Hui's face turned awkward.

He had made a huge misunderstanding.

These two Butterfree weren't Caterpie's parents at all. They had simply noticed a young Caterpie suddenly wandering into the flower field. Seeing how hungry and weak it looked, the pink Butterfree had paused its usual routine to take care of it.

"Thank you…"

Even though the livestream chat was bursting with laughter and Ah Hui himself felt embarrassed, he still sincerely thanked the pink Butterfree for taking care of his Caterpie.

Straightforward.

But genuine.

Meanwhile, Caterpie had finally eaten its fill.

It raised its head happily, glanced at the two beautiful Butterfree before it, then turned—

And spotted Ah Hui nearby, looking at it with a helpless expression.

"Waa!"

With a cheerful cry, Caterpie wriggled quickly forward and skillfully climbed onto Ah Hui's shoulder.

"Waa…"

It affectionately rubbed against its trainer.

But the next moment, it noticed Pidgeotto hovering in the sky above, staring at it with a sharp and unfriendly gaze.

Caterpie instantly remembered what it had done wrong earlier.

It clung even tighter to Ah Hui.

"By the way," Chen Mo continued, "since you two live in this flower field, do you know the group of Butterfree that used to gather nectar here?"

"Mii."

The two Butterfree exchanged glances.

First they nodded.

Then they shook their heads.

Naturally, Pikachu had to translate this confusing response.

As the conversation continued, Chen Mo gradually understood the situation.

According to the normal Butterfree, it had once belonged to that group. But after forming a pair with the pink Butterfree, it gradually left the flock.

The reason was simple.

The group rejected the pink Butterfree.

This surprised Chen Mo.

In his memory, pink Butterfree were supposed to be extremely attractive to male Butterfree. In many stories, mutated Pokémon even became leaders of their groups.

Yet in reality, the first shiny Pokémon Chen Mo encountered was actually ostracized by its own species.

"Mii, mii…"

The normal Butterfree explained that they deliberately migrated at a different time from the group.

Three days ago, the other Butterfree had already begun migrating north, searching for a suitable breeding ground.

Only after the group left did this pair come to the flower field to gather their daily nectar.

After learning this, Chen Mo was fairly certain that these two Butterfree didn't know Ash.

After hearing Chen Mo's translation, Ah Hui's expression became complicated.

"They left…"

If it had been three days ago, Pikachu was still doing its final special training.

Before that, Chen Mo had even asked Ah Hui if he wanted to bring Caterpie to the flower field.

If he had been a bit more decisive back then…

Caterpie might have met its biological parents before they migrated.

Noticing Ah Hui's expression, Chen Mo gently patted his shoulder.

"Missing it is normal," Chen Mo said calmly.

"In life, things rarely go exactly how we want. If everything always happened the way we planned, that wouldn't be realistic."

"So as long as you tried, that's already enough."

"Mo-ge…"

"Hmm?"

"…That sounded kinda awkward."

Ah Hui scratched his head.

Chen Mo's face darkened instantly.

"Damn it! I was trying to comfort you!"

"Alright, alright, my bad! Mo-ge, I admit I was wrong!"

Ah Hui quickly raised both hands in surrender.

Looking at Chen Mo, he silently thanked him from the bottom of his heart.

But this time, he didn't say it out loud.

After all, they were both grown men who had traveled together for quite a while now. They already understood each other well.

Saying it aloud would only make things more embarrassing.

Chen Mo simply smiled and said nothing more.

In his opinion, this outcome was actually quite good for Ah Hui and Caterpie.

Compared to the experience of the pink Butterfree, if this naturally weak Caterpie met its original swarm, what might happen was hard to predict.

After all, a swarm is still a swarm.

Two Butterfree alone couldn't decide everything. 🦋
