Brother Callum stood at the back of the Cathedral nave and watched the projection apparatus being assembled against the western wall. The wall was limestone, pale, smooth, built four hundred years ago by hands that had not imagined light would be cast upon it by anything other than the sun through the clerestory windows. The wall was forty feet wide. The projection would use eight feet of it.
Eight feet was the Cardinal's face.
The apparatus had arrived from the Mechanist Institute three days ago, accompanied by a technician, the same Rhen who had assisted Lenna Ashvane through every demonstration, and a set of instructions that Callum had read twice and understood once. The rune-crystal, the lens, the cooling jacket, the portable screen. Except they were not using the portable screen. They were using the wall.
