Chapter 47 - Chapter 47-18+

"Mom, this isn't appropriate. For one, I don't have the capability, and for another, I only want..."

Before I could finish, my mother-in-law cut me off, her voice leaving no room for argument. "We'll discuss that later. For now, you go to Jiangcheng with Luo Tong."

Her face was expressionless, revealing no hint of joy or anger. Once she gets serious, no one can see through her thoughts, let alone a novice like me. I couldn't figure her out at all.

I knew I couldn't say anything more, or I'd risk annoying her. She hates indecisive people the most.

I picked up the documents from the table and retreated. Only after closing the study door did I let out a long sigh of relief. My mother-in-law is usually very amiable, but the moment she enters the study to discuss serious matters, she naturally exudes a sense of pressure. I really dislike that feeling; it gives you a suffocating illusion.

Luo Tong had been waiting outside the study door the whole time. The moment I came out, she immediately asked, "Mr. Liao, can we set off now?"

Seeing me nod, she immediately turned and walked towards the door. The people my mother-in-law trains are indeed cut from the same cloth as her—they never drag their feet. I shook my head and hurried to catch up.

In the cramped elevator, it was just the two of us. Luo Tong stood expressionless, making the atmosphere somewhat awkward.

"Are all you female elites so serious and unsmiling?" I broke the silence.

I had intended to lighten the awkward mood, but Luo Tong acted as if she hadn't heard, still standing stiffly with a serious face, showing no intention of acknowledging me. The atmosphere actually became even more awkward.

I coughed awkwardly a couple of times and simply stopped talking. Making a fool of myself like this was truly unpleasant.

We went directly down to the B3 underground parking garage. I fished out my keys, ready to unlock my second-hand Haval.

"Mr. Liao, President Su has already prepared a car. Please follow me." Luo Tong called out and then walked off on her own towards the other side of the parking lot.

Somewhat embarrassed, I put my car keys away. Going to sign a contract for a project worth hundreds of millions, driving a second-hand Haval would indeed be a bit of a letdown.

When I followed Luo Tong to the car my mother-in-law had prepared, my eyes nearly popped out of my head. A brand new Bentley sedan sat quietly before me. I don't know much about cars, but I knew this one had to cost at least several million.

I know that kind of money is a drop in the bucket for my mother-in-law, but for me, it would take decades of working without eating or drinking to afford it.

My wife and mother-in-law had suggested helping me change cars more than once, but I always refused. After all, I'm a man, and I have a natural resistance to spending women's money. Later, to spare my pitiful self-esteem, my wife and mother-in-law never brought it up again.

Refusing their offers to change my car didn't mean I didn't like cars. Few men can resist the allure of a luxury car, just as they can't resist the allure of women.

I carefully reached out and touched the car body. Putting everything else aside, the feel was indeed leagues better than my second-hand Haval. Luo Tong glanced at me as if looking at an idiot, pulled out the car key, unlocked the car, and prepared to get in.

"Wait," I hurriedly stopped her, then without another word, snatched the keys from her hand. "How can we let a beauty do the dirty, tiring work of driving? I'll do it."

Luo Tong didn't hesitate either. She shrugged, indicating I could do as I pleased, and walked around to the other side to get into the passenger seat.

I quickly got in, started the car, put it in neutral, and stomped on the accelerator a few times, experiencing the thrill brought by the luxury car's engine. The sound was indeed much more impressive than my second-hand Haval's.

"Mr. Liao, can we set off now?" Luo Tong's voice carried a hint of tone for the first time—a tone of helplessness. For a business elite like her who's used to luxury cars, my behavior probably made me look like a country bumpkin in her eyes.

I smiled awkwardly and said, "Are you always this serious when you talk? Look how pretty you are. If you could learn to speak with a smile, surely hordes of men would fall at your feet."

"Mr. Liao, there's a well-known principle in the business world," Luo Tong said.

"What principle?" I asked.

"Talk too much, die fast," Luo Tong replied expressionlessly.

That one sentence left me speechless and deflated. This woman is truly something else, utterly ungrateful.

"Where to now?" I asked coldly. Having my warm advances met with cold indifference twice in a row, even the most patient person would get irritated.

"South City Hotel," Luo Tong replied crisply, unwilling to say even one extra word.

So-called human connections are mutual. Since she wasn't willing to engage with me, I couldn't be bothered to make a fool of myself either. Releasing the handbrake, I stepped on the accelerator and we were off.

I have to admit, driving a good car is exhilarating. If it weren't for the city speed limits, I'd have loved to floor it and experience the feeling of flying.

Watching the other vehicles on the road giving me a wide berth and seeing the envious glances from pedestrians gave me a somewhat giddy feeling. No wonder people work themselves to the bone to earn money. The feeling of driving a luxury car is indeed much more satisfying than driving a second-hand Haval.

Before I knew it, we had arrived at the South City Hotel. This was where Li Tao was taken down by my mother-in-law. Remembering her ruthless demeanor that night, I still felt a lingering fear.

Luo Tong led me directly to the top floor. This was the luxury suite area, outrageously expensive. Only the wealthy or influential could afford to stay here.

"Um, can I ask something? What are we doing at a hotel?" I couldn't help but ask.

However, as usual, Luo Tong showed no intention of acknowledging me. I had no choice but to follow sheepishly behind her, silently cursing myself for not learning my lesson.

Luo Tong led me all the way to the innermost room at the end of the corridor before stopping. She took out a key card and opened the door.

The room was decorated with extreme luxury, complete with both a living room and a bedroom.

As soon as we entered the room, Luo Tong took out a suit and handed it to me, saying, "Go to the bedroom and change into this."

I knew this woman wouldn't say an unnecessary word to me. I couldn't be bothered to waste my breath either. Taking the clothes, I went straight to the bedroom to change.

The suit was brand new, the tags still attached. I casually flipped one over to look. I shouldn't have looked. My eyes nearly popped out—it was a full six-figure price tag. This suit was worth more than my second-hand Haval.

"Have these rich people been kicked in the head by a donkey? This is way too damn extravagant," I muttered to myself as I carefully changed into the suit, holding it gingerly, afraid of causing even a single crease.

Wearing this priceless suit, I felt utterly uncomfortable. I didn't even dare bend my legs when walking, practically shuffling slowly into the living room.

Luo Tong was already growing impatient. The moment I appeared, she immediately patted the sofa and said, "Come sit here."

With this woman of few words, I didn't want to say much either. Anyway, my mother-in-law said to follow her arrangements. I'll just do whatever she says.

As soon as I sat down, Luo Tong pulled out a bag from somewhere. It was filled with all sorts of makeup items.

She grabbed a wig from the bag and, without a word, plopped it onto my head.
