Lynn was startled half a step back by the sudden exclamation and collision.
His wand slipped instantly into his hand as he looked warily at the newcomer.
At this hour, Diagon Alley was already closed.
So who would still be wandering around here—and so recklessly?
By the faint light spilling through the crack in the Leaky Cauldron's door, along with the dim glow of distant magical street lamps, Lynn finally got a clear look at the man.
A scruffy wizard.
Short and stout, with bandy legs and a slight wobble in his gait.
His hair was greasy and matted, as if it hadn't been washed in days, clumping together in tangled strands.
His face looked pale in the dim light, and his bulging eyes darted around like a startled goldfish—filled with panic and guilt.
His robe was rumpled.
One hand clutched tightly at the front pocket of his lapel, which bulged unnaturally, producing a faint metallic clinking sound with every movement.
Everything about him screamed shady.
"Who's there?! You scared me!" Lynn snapped irritably.
Although the man didn't appear immediately dangerous, his behavior and appearance were highly suspicious.
The wizard flinched again at Lynn's voice.
After a brief shiver, he focused and realized the person he had bumped into was just a young wizard—practically a student.
He visibly relaxed.
Forcing himself to stay composed, he spoke in a reproachful, blustering tone:
"So it's just a brat… What are you doing in Diagon Alley in the middle of the night instead of sleeping at home? It's not safe here!"
As he spoke, his eyes kept darting around, clearly checking for other people.
Lynn: "…"
I should be asking you that.
Lynn grumbled inwardly.
This man practically reeked of guilt—no matter how you looked at it, he didn't seem like a good person.
And yet he had the nerve to lecture him?
Seeing Lynn remain silent and simply stare, the wizard grew even more uneasy.
He clearly didn't want to linger.
"Forget it—just watch where you're going next time!" he muttered.
He tried to brush past Lynn, quickening his pace toward the entrance of the Leaky Cauldron, clearly eager to leave as soon as possible.
Just as he passed—
A familiar notification sounded in Lynn's mind.
[Ding! Task Issued: Prevent the thief Mundungus from getting away scot-free]
[Task Objective: Stop and ensure the thief Mundungus Fletcher is brought to justice for his theft in Diagon Alley tonight.]
[Task Reward: An absolutely loyal House-elf]
[He will not strike back when hit, nor talk back when scolded. He will not change his name or his ways, and will obey his master's every command. He will be an impeccable butler.]
Lynn glanced at the system interface.
An absolutely loyal House-elf?
That reward was undeniably tempting.
But…
Mundungus? Who's that?
The system had specified that he was a thief and even provided a full name: Mundungus Fletcher.
Lynn quickly searched his memory—but the name meant nothing to him.
His gaze snapped back to the shabby figure, who was already nearing the pub entrance.
Could it be him?
The appearance…
The behavior…
It certainly fit the profile of a petty thief.
"Mundungus!" Lynn called out experimentally.
The wizard's back stiffened instantly.
His footsteps froze.
After a brief hesitation—one, maybe two seconds—he slowly turned his head.
A forced, bewildered expression stretched across his face.
"Who's Mundungus? A-are you calling me?"
He tried to play dumb.
But that moment of stiffness and hesitation had already given him away.
That was confirmation enough.
A normal person hearing an unfamiliar name might glance back out of curiosity—or ignore it entirely.
But this kind of reaction—
A defensive counter-question, laced with panic—
That was guilt.
He recognized the name.
Lynn didn't hesitate any longer.
With people like this, striking first was always the right choice.
"Stupefy!"
The spell shot out instantly, streaking straight toward Mundungus's face!
Mundungus never expected this "brat" to attack so suddenly—and so decisively.
He didn't even have time to draw his wand before the spell hit him squarely.
"Ugh!"
His eyes rolled back.
His body collapsed forward—
And he hit the ground unconscious.
As he fell, his grip loosened on his pocket.
Clatter—
A pile of golden Galleons spilled out.
Along with a scattering of silver Sickles and bronze Knuts—
Even a few small but clearly valuable gold ornaments, likely stolen straight from shop counters.
The coins rolled across the ground, glinting faintly in the dim light.
Lynn stepped forward and nudged Mundungus's limp body with his foot, confirming he was completely out cold.
He glanced at the system.
The task was not marked as complete.
So simply subduing him wasn't enough.
He needed to ensure the man was handed over to proper authorities—either the Ministry of Magic or the Aurors.
But Lynn had no intention of dragging a thief to the Ministry in the middle of the night.
Nor did he want to stand around waiting.
He'd have to use a little technique.
Lynn raised his wand and pointed it at Mundungus's temple.
"Obliviate."
He carefully controlled the spell, erasing only the memories from the moment Mundungus bumped into him up to the point he was knocked unconscious.
That way, when Mundungus woke up, he would only remember stealing something—and then mysteriously blacking out while trying to escape.
Lynn himself would be completely erased from the sequence.
Next, Lynn glanced around.
The entrance to Diagon Alley was deserted.
The back door of the Leaky Cauldron remained tightly shut.
He needed to create a disturbance—
Something that would draw attention.
Then someone would naturally discover the unconscious thief and the stolen goods.
He stepped back a few paces and pointed his wand at a pile of discarded wooden crates and empty barrels near the pub's back entrance.
"Incendio!"
A burst of flames erupted from his wand, instantly igniting the clutter.
Whoosh—
The fire surged upward, spreading quickly in the night air.
Flames illuminated the dark corner as thick smoke began to rise.
It wasn't Fiendfyre—
But it was more than enough to attract attention.
Whether from late-night patrons inside the Leaky Cauldron or nearby wizards in Diagon Alley—
Someone would come.
"Time to slip away~"
Lynn clapped his hands lightly and put away his wand.
He cast one last satisfied glance at the blazing fire—
At the unconscious Mundungus lying nearby—
At the scattered gold coins glittering on the ground.
Then he turned, cast a Disillusionment Charm over himself, and quietly slipped away into the night, heading back home.
As he walked, a smug thought crossed his mind:
Tsk~ doing good deeds without leaving a name.
Not only did I stop a thief, I even helped return the stolen goods.
Sure, the method was a bit rough… but efficient.
Avoided the Ministry, solved the problem—perfect.
I, Lynn, am truly a model wizard who embodies the Five Stresses, Four Beauties, and Three Loves!
This reward is as good as mine.
