Chapter 68 - Chapter 68

With the initial pleasantries out of the way, the room's playful atmosphere gave way to one of sharp professionalism. Kakashi produced Tsunade's crimson diplomatic scroll, sliding it across the desk. For the next two hours, the flirtatious banter vanished, replaced by intense politics. They moved through the terms with negotiations: joint border patrols, formalizing intelligence sharing on rogue ninja, and solidifying the blossoming Leaf-Mist alliance. Mei was an incredibly sharp strategist, but Kakashi matched her step for step, intellect cutting through political red tape and introducing ideas that benefited both sides.

By the time the final seal was stamped on the official documents, the pale twilight of the Land of Water had spread over the village, casting a cool blue shade through the office windows.

Mei let out a soft sigh, leaning back in her chair and stretching her arms overhead, the formal posture of the Mizukage melting away to reveal the captivating woman beneath. She looked across the desk at Kakashi, her green eyes fixing on his with a familiar, dangerous spark.

"Well, that takes care of the village's business," Mei said, a low purr returning to her voice as she stood up from her desk. She walked around the table, stopping just inches from where Kakashi sat. "And since you made such unprecedented time getting here, I'd say you've earned a break from being an official envoy."

She gestured toward the door, her smile turning completely wicked. "Come on, Kakashi. Allow me to show you how the Mist unwinds. I know a quiet place down by the lower canals, and you still owe me those extra compliments."

Mei stood up and strode toward the door. She stepped with an extra, deliberate sway in her step, the kind of effortless attraction that would catch the eye of men and women alike.

Kakashi stood and followed her, allowing his gaze to linger for only one... or maybe two glances. But who was really counting? And really, who could blame him? Certainly not Mei, whose subtle, knowing smile proved she had felt his eyes on her the entire time.

They moved out into the quiet hallway, leaving the heavy political documents behind.

Mei led Kakashi out of the central tower and directly into the heart of the village. It was a measured move. By choosing a route through the busy evening market rather than the quiet backstreets, she ensured that the villagers could see them walking side by side.

As they moved through the lanterns lighting up the damp twilight, the crowds naturally parted. The quiet talks followed them like a wave. Mei walked with an easy confidence, keeping her ears tuned to the low mutterings of true admiration she knew her people held for the silver-haired ninja. To the Hidden Mist, Kakashi wasn't just a foreign envoy; he was the man who had freed them from Yagura's brutal reign.

Beyond gratitude, it was a political masterstroke. Mei was gently conditioning her village to accept the sight of them together, building a public foundation for a deeper, undeniable connection between them.

Kakashi noticed the strategy immediately, but he didn't comment on it. There was no need to disrupt her plan. Instead, he simply kept his hands in his pockets, offering polite, relaxed waves whenever a passing ninja or merchant recognized him and bowed in respect.

"You're quite popular here, Kakashi," Mei noted softly, her voice quietly carrying over the background noise of the market as she cast a sideways glance at him. "My people don't forget their heroes easily."

"Maa, I'm just glad this village is a lot more approachable now that you're the Mizukage. It would seem you've turned things around."

"It took an immense amount of blood, sweat, and paperwork," Mei replied, her tone a perfect blend of pride and lighthearted exhaustion as she guided him toward the entrance of a quiet, upscale establishment tucked away near the lower canals. "But hearing that from a man who has seen some of the worst of the ninja world? I'll consider that the highest praise."

The restaurant she had chosen was secluded, sitting right on the edge of the water where the soft hum of the village plaza finally faded into the background. The hostess inside bowed exceptionally low the moment she saw the Mizukage and her companion, immediately guiding them away from the main dining floor toward a completely private, open-air balcony overlooking the moonlit canals.

As the heavy sliding door clicked shut behind them, isolating them in the quiet night air, Kakashi took his seat across from her, completely relaxed.

Mei took her seat opposite him, resting her chin in her hands. Her green eyes traced the line of his jaw and the sharp symmetry of his face, a deeply fascinated smile pulling at her lips.

"You know, Kakashi," she started, her gaze lingering. "For a man who used to hide behind a mask, you are remarkably striking. It's almost unfair that you kept a face like that hidden from the world for so long. The first time I saw your section in the Bingo Book, I wondered how you'd look under the mask. Though I will admit that my guesses were somewhat childish. Buck teeth, big lips, or too many scars."

Kakashi let out a soft, genuine laugh, the corners of his eyes crinkling with deep amusement as he leaned back slightly in his chair.

"You aren't the only one who had thought along those lines. Some of the ones who I went to the academy with thought the same thing."

Mei chuckled softly, pouring a small cup of chilled sake and sliding it across the table toward him before filling her own. "Really? I would have figured fellow Leaf shinobi would have managed to catch a glimpse during a training exercise or a physical exam."

"You'd think so," Kakashi said, picking up the cup and taking a slow, casual sip. "But I was thorough. It became a bit of a running game back then. The more they tried to plan elaborate setups to reveal my face, the more creative I had to get to keep it covered."

The easy banter flowed naturally from there, lasting well into the night over a fantastic dinner of fresh local seafood. Kakashi mostly listened with an amused, patient smile as Mei vented over several more cups of sake, thoroughly complaining about the endless mountain of paperwork piling up on her desk and the relentlessly annoying village elders who contested her every move. For a brief moment, the formal posture of the Mizukage was completely stripped away, allowing her to simply enjoy the rare luxury of a quiet evening free to just be Mei.

Once the dinner concluded, Mei insisted on personally escorting Kakashi through the quiet, moonlit streets to the upscale guest estate reserved for high-ranking foreign dignitaries.

Stopping just outside the heavy wooden doors of his quarters, Mei turned to face him, the cool night air gently rustling her long auburn hair. She gave him a slow, incredibly charming smile.

"Well, here we are," she said softly, leaning slightly against the doorframe. "You can always come find me if you get bored tonight, Kakashi."

Kakashi stopped, pausing mid-stride as he gave her a deadpan, deeply amused look that silently questioned her blatant teasing.

Mei rolled her eyes playfully at his expression, letting out a light laugh as she waved her hand dismissively. "Oh, relax. It was a joke. I'm not that easy, Kakashi. I was hoping you'd get flustered, but it seems I'll have to step up my game.

"Maa, it'll take a bit more than that to throw me off, Mei," Kakashi replied smoothly, turning the handle to open the door to his room. "But nice try. Goodnight, Mei. Thank you for the dinner."

"Goodnight, handsome," she murmured, turning on her heel with that same deliberate, captivating sway as she began her walk back toward the central tower.
