Chapter 102 - Sanctuary Spark 2

"More."

The word hit the chamber like a match struck in sealed air, dry and dangerous.

Rhydian's eyes were blown wide, pupils swallowing every trace of color. His grip at the back of her neck tightened—possessive, primal, a reflex of pure heat—then loosened at once, as if his very bones remembered the boundary she'd drawn. The muscles in his jaw stood out, corded with the strain of holding back a storm.

The wardlines hummed, trembling. Seams in the ceiling flashed silver. The air grew thick, tasting of ozone, lightning, and the salt-slick heat of skin.

Jina didn't retreat.

She met his fire by pulling him back into the kiss—deeper, hungrier, a deliberate surrender to the current between them. Rhydian's breath shattered against her mouth. His bound hands shifted, the cuffs humming as they scraped uselessly against the air, and when he couldn't grab, he flattened his palms against her waist, dragging her closer with a desperate, grinding pull. The hard planes of his body aligned with hers, leaving no space for doubt, for air, for anything but the scorching press of him.

He dragged in a ragged breath and surged forward.

Instinct took over—a raw, mapping hunger. His mouth left hers to blaze a trail down her jaw, her throat, the frantic pulse at the base of her neck. His teeth grazed her collarbone, not biting, but pressing—a promise of possession held in check by a thread. His hips rocked against hers, a slow, relentless friction that drew a gasp from her lungs.

Then he froze.

Not because the heat had cooled.

Because a sharper, clearer terror cut through it—the fear of her voice. The fear of becoming a weapon in his own hands. The fear that if he lost himself completely, he'd shatter, and they'd call it proof of her weakness.

His forehead dropped, hard, against her shoulder. His breaths came in broken, ragged pulls, steaming against the damp skin of her neck.

Jina's fingers sank into the sweat-damp hair at his nape—not to control, but to anchor. Her lips brushed the shell of his ear, her voice a low, steady pulse in the charged dark.

"Slow."

His eyes flicked to her mouth at the sound, and the wardlines shivered in response. He gave a single, jerky nod, his jaw clenched so tight she could see the tremor in it.

When his mouth found hers again, it was not gentle. It was consuming, a kiss that spoke of nights spent in solitary fever, of fantasies forged in chains. It tasted of desperation and a specific, aching loneliness. His tongue swept against hers, deep and claiming, and a low groan vibrated from his chest into hers.

His bound hand rose, clumsy and urgent, and cupped the side of her face. His thumb stroked over the arch of her cheekbone, then slid down to trace the swollen line of her lower lip—a touch that was suddenly, devastatingly tender amidst the frenzy.

Jina tasted the bright copper of her split lip again. She didn't care.

Rhydian broke the kiss just enough to drag air into his starving lungs. His voice, when it came, was stripped raw, every syllable hauled up from a deep, dark well.

"Do you… understand."

It wasn't poetry. It was a lifeline.

Jina held his wild gaze, her own breath coming fast. "Yes."

His eyes sharpened, searching hers as if yes was a cliff edge. He needed the ground to be solid.

"What I want," he forced out, the words gritted between his teeth. "Do you—"

The bond erupted—a geyser of white flame under her ribs, so bright and desperate it stole her breath. It wasn't just heat; it was a need, a yearning so profound it felt like grief. It pressed against her, through her, seeking a channel, a home.

Jina kept her palm against the fevered skin of his jaw. "Say it."

His eyelids slammed shut. When they opened, the feral gleam was still there, but it was fractured now, humanized by a vulnerability that made her chest ache.

"I want to ruin this distance," he rasped, his voice gravel and velvet. "I want to feel you come apart against me. I want… you to let me."

The honesty was a blade, clean and sharp.

Jina's heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drum echoing the wardline's hum. This wasn't fear. This was the precipice of a choice, one with consequences that stretched far beyond this warded room. A choice Severin would dissect and weaponize.

But here, now, the world had narrowed to the space between their bodies, to the scent of his skin, to the electric current of the bond she had chosen to leave un-gated.

"I'm choosing this," she said, her own voice gaining a rough edge. "I walked in. I unlocked the door. I'm here."

Rhydian's throat worked. His gaze dropped to her mouth again, then jerked away as if the sight was a punishment. "And your voice," he choked out. "If you—"

"I won't," she cut in, firm. "Not on you. Not like this."

A fraction of the terrifying tension in his shoulders eased. The space it left was instantly flooded with a fresh, more focused wave of heat.

Rhydian kissed her again—a deep, claiming plunge that felt like drowning in sunlight. His body moved, instinct guiding him toward the next inevitable step, his hips pressing her back toward the stone wall.

Jina's palm came up, flat against the solid wall of his chest. Not pushing. Pressing. A full stop.

He froze, every muscle locking. The wardlines dimmed, the room holding its breath.

His eyes were wild, desperate. "Don't—" Panic, pure and sharp, flashed across his face. "Don't stop now, I can't—"

"I'm not stopping," she whispered, her voice husky. "Ask again. The way you just did. Make it real."

Frustration, shame, and a need so vast it was painful warred on his face. He crushed them, forcing the words out like a confession. "Do you want this," he gritted out, each word a victory. "With me. Like this. Knowing what I am right now."

"Yes." Her answer was a clean strike. No hesitation for the room to misinterpret. No softness for enemies to twist.

Rhydian exhaled as if she'd driven the air from his lungs. A shudder wracked his frame.

"And you understand," he repeated, lower now, the question becoming a vow, a tether to his sanity. "What I'm asking. What this is."

"Yes." Her hand slid from his chest to curl around the back of his neck, her fingers tangling in his hair. An anchor. A choice. "I understand."

The bond didn't just flare—it detonated.

White-hot need poured through the connection, a riptide threatening to sweep them both away. But now it had a shape. A direction. A yes to follow.

"Say it," he begged, his voice breaking.

"Yes," she breathed against his lips. "Yes."

The word seemed to unravel the last of his control. A raw, wounded sound escaped him, and he moved with a new, terrifying purpose.

His bound hands fumbled with the clasp of her cloak, his movements impatient, clumsy with need. The fabric slithered down her arms to pool on the floor. His gaze raked over her, leaving a trail of fire in its wake. His mouth returned to her throat, sucking lightly at the pulse there before reclaiming her lips in a kiss that was all tongue and heat and promise.

Jina's knees buckled. She clung to his shoulders, her fingers digging into the hard muscle, feeling the heat of him through the thin linen of his shirt. The world tilted, reduced to the feel of his hands sliding down her spine, pulling her flush against him, to the shocking, perfect friction where their bodies met.

The wardlines flickered wildly—a cascade of silver warnings.

Rhydian went rigid, pulling back just enough to search her face, his eyes blazing with a question.

"Tell me," he rasped, the command fraying into a plea. "If it's too much. If I'm too much."

He wasn't fully in control. He was a man holding a live wire, refusing to drop it, begging her for instructions.

"I'll tell you," Jina promised, her voice trembling not with fear, but with the intensity of the current arcing between them.

He nodded, a sharp, frantic gesture, and dropped his forehead to her shoulder again, his breath hot and uneven against her skin. He was gathering himself, fighting for every inch of clarity.

Then the instinct rose, undeniable. His hips rolled against hers, a slow, deliberate motion that drew a sharp gasp from her. The bond screamed with need—claim, take, mine—and she felt the exact moment he wrestled it back, his entire body shaking with the effort.

He went still, chest heaving. He lifted his head, and his eyes met hers, glassy with unshed tears of frustration and a heat so deep it looked like agony.

"Do you…" He swallowed, his Adam's apple bobbing. He tried again, forcing the words through a wall of pure want. "Do you give me full consent," he ground out, the question brutal in its honesty, "to take you to that bed and finish this?"

It wasn't romantic. It was necessary. It was the final lock, and he was handing her the key.

Jina didn't soften her answer. She made it a pillar, something for them both to hold onto in the coming storm.

"Yes," she said, steady and clear. "I am choosing you. I understand exactly what this is. And yes."

Rhydian's eyes closed as if struck. When they opened, the storm was still there, chaotic and wild, but it now swirled around a hard, calm center: her yes.

Outside the inner access door, the final lock clicked home.

Not loud. Not an intrusion. The sound of the world being sealed out. The sound of privacy, of a choice being honored.

The sound made Rhydian flinch, then settle. A terrible tension bled from his shoulders. They were, finally, alone.

His mouth found her ear, his breath a scalding whisper that feathered down her spine.

"More."

This time, it wasn't a plea or a demand.

It was an answered prayer.

Jina's world dissolved into sensation—the slide of his hands on her skin, the crush of his mouth, the overwhelming rightness of his body moving with hers toward the waiting dark. The last thing she knew was the heat, the choice, and the thrilling, terrifying fall into the silent, starless night between one breath and the next.
