Chapter 63 - Chapter 61

Chapter LXI: The Reopening

The day everyone waits for finally arrives. It does not creep quietly into existence, but it rises. The sun ascends over the horizon like a golden proclamation, casting its first light upon the University of the Constellations, illuminating towers, banners, walls, and faces filled with anticipation.

For weeks, preparation consumes every corner of the campus. For months, caution lingers after what once happened. For a year, the Starlight Festival stands postponed yet its brilliance dimmed by an incident that forces silence where celebration should have been.

But today, the silence ends as the festival returns. And the university stands ready.

At dawn, vendors begin lining the right two lanes of the Twelve Avenues, the broad roads that radiate outward like spokes from the heart of the university. The campus roads are designed with four lanes each. Because of that design, even as stalls and booths occupy the rightmost lanes, one full lane in each direction remains open for motorists, emergency vehicles, and official processionals. The planners anticipate everything.

The food stalls display colorful canopies of blue and gold dominating the spectrum, yet accented with each district's color scheme. Steam rises from grills. Oil crackles in pans. The smell of sweet rice cakes, grilled skewers, fried tempura, roasted corn, and caramelized nuts drifts through the cool morning air. Trade booths display handmade crafts, festival merchandise, constellation-themed trinkets, and district flags.

Students walk in groups, wide-eyed. Faculty members inspect permits. Security personnel patrol steadily. Above them, every building wears celebration.

Blue and gold banners cascade from rooftops like rivers of silk. Each district overlays its own identity upon the colors such as crimson trims for Leo, emerald accents for Taurus, silver borders for Aquarius.

Festive flaglets stretch across streets in crisscrossing lines, fluttering gently in the morning breeze. They shimmer as sunlight catches them, like fragments of a thousand tiny stars suspended between buildings.

The university does not merely look festive. It looks reborn.

Before any celebration truly begins, Dr. Yoshida conducts one final inspection. He stands near the outer perimeter, where the reinforced walls stretch around the campus like a fortress reborn for the modern age. Beside him stands Engr. Abeno, the university's Mechanical and Sanitary Engineer, who is sharp-eyed, precise, and composed.

The faint hum of the dome's latent energy resonates almost imperceptibly in the air. Dr. Yoshida folds his hands behind his back.

"Engineer Abeno," he begins calmly, "how secure is the dome's power system?"

She nods respectfully.

"The dome is primarily powered by a solar farm located far from the university grounds, President."

She gestures toward a tablet displaying schematics.

"The farm spans several hectares and operates independently from the university's internal grid. Even if the campus loses power, the dome will remain functional."

She zooms into a structural diagram.

"In addition, twelve generators are embedded within the twelve corners of the university perimeter. Each corresponds to one district."

"Twelve anchors for twelve districts," Yoshida murmurs.

"Yes, sir," she confirms. "Each generator can operate autonomously if the central grid fails."

Dr. Yoshida's gaze shifts upward toward the faint shimmer that outlines the perimeter.

"And in the event of an enemy attack?" he asks quietly.

Abeno does not hesitate.

"The dome is not a hologram projection, sir. It is not light alone."

She taps the screen again.

"It is projected from the walls themselves, reinforced by Meteologium and Colossium."

He raises an eyebrow.

"Those elements are rumored to be indestructible."

She nods.

"They are. Even Stellanine Users have failed to fracture them in controlled stress experiments."

The wind shifts slightly. She continues.

"The walls projecting the dome are constructed using Roman-styled concrete—similar to what Engineer Nobara explained earlier."

"But reinforced further?" Yoshida asks.

"Yes, sir."

She swipes to a cross-sectional blueprint.

"Behind the geopolymer outer layer lies a two-meter thickness of aluminum composite, secured by bolts measuring 0.25 meters in diameter."

She zooms in again.

"These bolts are anchored deep into the foundation, engineered to withstand a Magnitude 10.0 earthquake."

Dr. Yoshida inhales slowly.

"Magnitude 10.0..."

"Hypothetical, but within design tolerance," she replies.

She continues steadily.

"Any Newtons or external forces applied against the structure result in zero effective displacement. Stress is absorbed and redistributed evenly."

She scrolls further.

"Even the gutter plates along the upper walls are fixed with 0.25-meter reinforcement bars and flanged bolts. The integration covers the entire perimeter of the university."

Dr. Yoshida studies the diagrams carefully. He nods.

"I like the sound of that."

Engr. Abeno smiles faintly.

"There is more."

She gestures toward the Administration Building, rising proudly at the campus center.

"The spire mounted atop the Administration Dome serves as the centroid anchor of the entire structure."

Yoshida's gaze follows her finger.

"That spire projects the same material composition as the perimeter walls—Meteologium and Colossium layered within."

She speaks with complete certainty.

"It is retrofitted with identical reinforcements. President Yoshida should not worry."

The wind lifts the banners slightly.

"That has been said," she concludes firmly, "threats from the external will have zero chances of entering."

Dr. Yoshida studies her face. He sees no doubt there.

"I agree," he says at last.

For the first time in months, the weight in his chest eases.

At exactly twelve noon, Dr. Yoshida stands upon a temporary podium at the main gate. Faculty members gather behind him. District heads stand in ceremonial attire. Security officers line the perimeter. Before him stretch the Twelve Avenues—now vibrant corridors of trade and culture.

He raises a golden ceremonial key.

"With gratitude for resilience," he declares, "and with confidence in our unity, I hereby open the Food and Trade Fair of the Starlight Festival!"

The gates swing open. Cheers erupt, and vendors begin serving. Music starts playing from concealed speakers. The festival lives.

At four in the afternoon, drums echo. The Grand Parade begins at the Horoscope Circle Major—the grand circular road that encircles the university core.

Each of the twelve districts marches in order. The banners are raised. With colors so vibrant. Students cheer for their respective districts.

The Criminology students march with disciplined steps. The Arts students perform synchronized flag dances. The Engineering department showcases miniature robotic constructs walking alongside them. The Medicine students carry symbolic staffs wrapped in white and silver.

As the parade progresses through each of the Twelve Avenues, confetti cannons release bursts of blue and gold paper into the air.

The dome above remains invisible but ever-present. The procession ends at the University Grandstand.

The Grandstand stage gleams magnificently. LED panels line the backdrop, shifting between constellations. Spotlights sweep across the audience in gentle arcs. Gold and blue fabric drapes cascade from the stage edges. The university emblem shines at the center.

As dusk approaches, the sky deepens into violet. The Special Power and Defense Class steps onto the stage. Shinse stands before them. He raises his baton. The National Anthem begins. Voices rise in harmony—clear, powerful, unified. The crowd falls silent. Afterward, they sing the University Hymn. The LED backdrop displays the university crest illuminated by simulated starlight. When the final note echoes across the Grandstand, applause roars like thunder.

Dr. Yoshida steps forward. The applause fades. He stands tall beneath the lights.

"My dear students," he begins, his voice resonating across the grounds, "faculty members, alumni, guests..."

He pauses.

"A year ago, we stood at the brink of celebration."

Silence spreads.

"And yet, unforeseen circumstances forced us to postpone this festival."

He does not describe the incident in detail but everyone remembers. The panic, the confusion, and the uncertainty.

"We could have allowed fear to define us," he continues. "We could have let that moment become the closing chapter of our unity."

His voice strengthens.

"But instead, we chose preparation. We chose resilience."

He gestures toward the dome.

"We reinforced our walls, not only with titanium and concrete but with collaboration."

He looks at the students.

"You represent twelve districts. Twelve disciplines. Twelve identities."

He spreads his arms.

"But beneath this dome, you are one university."

Applause begins to swell. He raises his voice further.

"The Starlight Festival is not merely celebration. It is a declaration that knowledge shines brightest in adversity."

He points upward.

"And tonight, beneath this secure sky, we reclaim our tradition."

His tone becomes proud and powerful.

"I hereby formally reopen the Starlight Festival and the University Sports Fest!"

Fireworks explode into the night. Blue and gold lights scatter across the sky like stars reborn. The crowd erupts.

Moments later, the stadium lights dim slightly. A single runner appears at the edge of the oval track, carrying a torch. He runs steadily, each step echoing against the ground.

The flame flickers, reflecting in countless eyes. He circles the oval, not just once but twice. Then approaches the ceremonial bowl of firewood. With deliberate motion, he lowers the torch. Flames roar upward. The Sports Fest is officially reopened.

Athletes gather before the stage. Among them are Samero (Volleyball), Kuebiko (Basketball); and Takeshi, Okaki, Katsunan, Nakao, and Miran (eSports).

They raise their right hands. In unison, they swear to compete with honor, fairness, and integrity. The crowd applauds again.

As the formalities conclude, intermission performances begin. Dance troupes perform under shifting lights. Musicians play modern and classical pieces alike.

The Reopening Concert begins. Energy pulses through the Grandstand. Students laugh.

Friends cheer. Districts wave flags proudly.

Above them all, the dome stands silent and strong. Protecting, and guarding. Allowing celebration to flourish without fear.

And as the night deepens, the University of the Constellations glows brighter than ever before. Not because of fireworks. Not because of lights. But because unity—once shaken—now burns stronger than ever.
