Chapter 16 - An asset

Danish leaned against the car when Nuha stepped outside.

"Salam alaykum," he said with a grin.

"Walaykum salam," Nuha replied, climbing in. "You know you could just knock."

"And risk Auntie interrogating me?" he said. "Never."

She laughed as he drove off.

"So," Danish said casually, "big day tomorrow."

"Mm," Nuha hummed. "Grandparents' anniversary. A lot of food. Too many aunties."

"And questions," Danish added.

Nuha groaned. "If one more aunty asks me when I'm getting married, I'll fake a phone call and disappear."

Danish chuckled. "You know they mean well."

"They mean pressure," she corrected.

He glanced at her. "You okay?"

She sighed. "Everyone keeps asking me that."

"Because you look like someone who's holding too much in."

Nuha stared out the window. "Work has been… intense."

"Rayyan intense?"

She shot him a look. "You're not subtle."

"You don't hide it," he shrugged.

Nuha sighed, leaning back. "It's complicated."

"Isn't it always?" Danish said. "But tell me anyway."

She hesitated. "He's… kind. But careful. Like he's always holding himself back."

"That's dangerous," Danish said quietly.

"How?"

"When a man holds too much in, it eventually spills."

Nuha glanced at him. "You sound wise."

"I learn from mistakes."

She smiled. "Today, he asked why I didn't take my car to the mosque."

Danish raised a brow. "And?"

"I told him I didn't want to stress myself."

"And he believed you?"

"He didn't say anything after."

Danish hummed. "That means he's thinking."

"Why does that sound ominous?"

"Because men don't think silently unless it matters."

Nuha looked out the window. "What if it matters too much?"

Danish slowed slightly. "Do you like him?"

She swallowed. "I… care."

Danish nodded. "That's the beginning of trouble."

She laughed softly. "You're not encouraging."

"I'm honest," he said. "And protective."

She smiled at him. "Thank you."

He glanced at her. "For what?"

"For not asking questions you don't need answers to."

" But he careful" he said

Nuha smiled faintly. "I've survived worse."

"Your ummi?" Danish asked gently.

She nodded. "She's hiding something."

"She always does that when she thinks she's protecting you."

"I wish she'd trust me more," Nuha whispered.

Danish glanced at her. "She does. She just doesn't want you to hurt."

Nuha nodded.

They drove in silence for a while.

"By the way," Danish said suddenly, "I saw your new car."

Nuha smiled. "Rayyan gave it to me."

Danish whistled. "That's not normal boss behavior."

"I know," she murmured.

He looked at her seriously. "If he ever hurts you...."

"You'll do what?" she teased.

He smiled. "I'll glare very strongly."

She laughed.

The villa gates came into view.

"Whatever happens," Danish said quietly, "you're family."

Nuha smiled warmly. "Thank you."

The Shuaib house was too quiet.

Not peaceful, just quiet in the way a place becomes when everyone inside it is thinking but no one is saying what they really mean.

Rayyan stepped inside just as the call to prayer echoed faintly from a nearby mosque, the sound drifting through the open windows before fading into the night. He loosened his cufflinks slowly, deliberately, as though dragging out the moment before reality caught up to him.

Before he could even take a second step toward the stairs, the housekeeper appeared.

"Sir," she said respectfully, "your father asked that you see him immediately."

Rayyan closed his eyes for a brief moment.

"Of course," he replied calmly.

The calm was practiced. Learned. Forced.

The door to his father's study was already open.

Rayyan paused at the threshold, taking in the scene.

His father sat behind the heavy mahogany desk, posture straight, hands folded as if carved from stone. Authority radiated from him effortlessly.....years of command, control, and unchallenged decisions.

To the side, perched casually on an armchair like she belonged there more than anyone else, was Laiyana.

His stepsister.

Her legs were crossed elegantly, nails immaculate, lips curved in a faint smile that never quite reached her eyes. She looked… entertained.

Rayyan's jaw tightened.

"Salam alaykum," he greeted.

"Walaykum salam," his father replied curtly.

Laiyana echoed lazily, "Walaykum salam, brother."

"Sit," his father said.

Rayyan did.

The silence stretched.

Then...

"This company," his father began, voice firm and clipped, "has become careless."

Rayyan nodded once. "I disagree."

His father's eyes narrowed. "You always do these days."

"We're expanding," Rayyan said carefully. "Growth comes with competition."

"Competition?" Laiyana scoffed softly. "They're not competing. They're winning."

Rayyan turned to her. "You've always enjoyed exaggeration."

She smiled wider. "And you've always enjoyed denial."

His father raised a hand. "Enough."

He leaned forward. "A company that appeared from nowhere is now outperforming us in sectors we dominated for years. Investors are talking. Partners are questioning."

Rayyan inhaled slowly. "And we are responding."

"How?" his father demanded. "By gifting employees luxury cars?"

The words struck like a slap.

Rayyan's expression didn't change...but something dark flickered in his eyes.

"That was a performance reward," he said evenly.

Laiyana tilted her head. "A Lexus LC 500, Rayyan? For a secretary?"

"She's an executive assistant," Rayyan corrected sharply. "And she earned it."

His father leaned back. "She earned too much."

Silence.

Rayyan understood immediately where this was going.

"We need leverage," his father continued. "And Allah has placed it in our hands."

Rayyan's voice hardened. "No."

Laiyana laughed quietly. "You haven't even heard the plan."

"I don't need to," he said. "You're talking about Nuha."

His father didn't deny it.

"She already has an appointment letter from them," Laiyana said smoothly. "The same company surpassing us. That's not coincidence."

Rayyan stood abruptly.

"She will not be used."

His father's voice dropped dangerously. "Sit down."

Rayyan remained standing.

"You're asking me to destroy someone's trust," Rayyan said. "Someone who believes in this company."

"She will be serving this company," his father replied. "From the inside."

"She's not a spy," Rayyan snapped.

"She's an asset," Laiyana said calmly. "And if she's as loyal as you claim, she'll do it."

Rayyan laughed, short, bitter.

"And if she refuses?"

The room went cold.

His father's gaze hardened. "Then she's replaceable."

The word echoed.

Replaceable.

Rayyan's fists clenched.

"You would sack her?" he asked quietly.

"Yes."

Just like that.

No hesitation. No remorse.

Rayyan finally sat, the weight of it crashing down on him.

"You're threatening her livelihood," he said hoarsely. "To force her hand."

"I'm protecting this family's legacy," his father replied. "Something you seem to have forgotten."

Rayyan looked up, eyes burning. "Or maybe I remember it too well."

Laiyana leaned forward, voice almost gentle. "Careful, brother. You sound… emotional."

Rayyan met her gaze. "And you sound cruel."

Her smile didn't falter.

"You may go," his father said dismissively. "Think about it. We'll discuss again."

Rayyan stood slowly, bowed his head once, and walked out without another word.

Behind him, Laiyana's voice followed softly ..

"You're losing control, Rayyan."

Rayyan shut the door and leaned against it, breathing hard.

For the first time that day, the mask cracked.

He crossed the room and sat on the edge of his bed, fingers trembling slightly as he reached for his phone...then stopped himself.

Instead, he turned on Qur'an recitation.

The verses filled the room, soothing yet piercing, each word slicing through the chaos in his chest.

Trust.

Justice.

Amanah.

A knock came at the door.

"Come in," he murmured.

His mother entered quietly, dressed in soft white, her presence instantly changing the air.

She sat beside him without a word.

Rayyan didn't look at her. He simply leaned sideways and rested his head in her lap like a tired child.

She stroked his hair gently.

"You're carrying something heavy," she said softly.

He chuckled bitterly. "When am I not?"

She paused. "Is this about Nuha?"

He stiffened and looked up.

"How do you know her name?"

She smiled sadly. "A mother sees what others pretend not to. Besides Laiyana talks "

He sighed, sinking back into her lap. "They want to use her."

Her hand stilled. "Use her how?"

"As bait. As leverage. As a weapon."

Her lips tightened. "And you won't allow it."

"No," he said immediately. "Never."

She studied him. "Then they'll hurt her."

His chest tightened. "That's what scares me."

She was quiet for a long moment.

"You love her," she said finally.

He sat up sharply. "No."

She smiled knowingly. "You protect her. You worry about her future. You fear her pain more than your own."

He looked away. "That doesn't mean...."

"It means love," she said gently. "Whether you accept it or not."

Rayyan swallowed hard.

"What if loving her destroys her?" he whispered.

His mother cupped his face.

"Then your test," she said softly, "will be choosing courage over fear."

Rayyan closed his eyes, the weight of the coming storm settling over him.

Outside, the night deepened.

And somewhere else.

Nuha stood at the edge of a future she didn't yet know was about to demand everything from her.
