On the internet, many viewers were speculating and discussing the plot of the final two episodes of Puella Magi Madoka Magica:
"In episode 10, Senior Mami, Kyoko, and Sayaka weren't revived. They should be revived in episode 11, right?"
"The animation is called Puella Magi Madoka Magica. By episode 11, the Main Character should finally become a magical girl."
"I hope the ending is truly healing, as Old Thief Lin said. Though he's probably just lying."
"Old Thief Lin really stopped posting. For some reason, I'm starting to feel uneasy."
"I've been analyzing everything Old Thief Lin has said lately. If he hasn't been lying, but has been hiding key information, and given the healing ending, the most likely outcome should be: the Main Character becomes a magical girl, defeats the Walpurgisnight, and successfully saves the town. But she and Homura Akemi should both die before they can turn into Witches."
"Healing and gut-wrenching at the same time? That actually sounds plausible."
"So, Senior Mami, Kyoko, and Sayaka really aren't going to be revived?"
"Who knows?"
As the crowd discussed, time quickly passed until midnight on Sunday. Under the watchful eyes of the world, Puella Magi Madoka Magica Episode 11 finally aired.
Since the entire previous episode had been a flashback, the narrative actually picked up from Episode 9: Kyubey's arrival at Homura Akemi's home and their conversation.
"Time traveler Homura Akemi, you've crossed countless parallel worlds to alter the course of events and achieve the ending you desire, repeating the same month over and over."
"Your existence answers a question: why does Madoka Kaname possess such extraordinary potential as a magical girl?"
"We can now establish a plausible hypothesis: the potential of a magical girl is determined by the quantity of causal karma she carries. This is understandable for a queen or a savior, but why does Madoka, who lives an ordinary life, carry such a vast amount of causal karma? It defies explanation, yet..."
Kyubey spoke for several sentences, Homura remained silent and impassive throughout. Only when Kyubey's next words came did she react: "Hey, Homura... perhaps Madoka becomes a stronger magical girl with each repetition of the same timeline because of you?"
Hearing this, Homura Akemi's pupils dilated slightly.
The camera zoomed in on Kyubey's omega-shaped mouth, giving it a gleeful expression. "Just as I suspected, the reason lies with you. More precisely, it's a side effect of your magic, isn't it?"
"What do you mean?" Homura Akemi asked urgently.
"You've only ever rewinded time for one reason: Madoka Kaname's safety. By repeatedly rewinding time for this same purpose, you've twisted countless parallel worlds into a spiral, with Madoka at its center."
Kyubey explained, "As a result, the causal threads of parallel worlds that should never have intertwined have all become linked to Madoka in this timeline. Her unimaginably vast Magical Power coefficient is no longer a mystery. The time you've repeated, all the causality cycling within it, has spun and spun until it finally connected to Madoka—making her the root cause of everything."
This explanation was accompanied by scenes from episode ten and an image of the Main Character bound by countless threads of "causality" emanating from all directions, as if she were standing before the gears of time.
Homura Akemi's hands, resting on her skirt, clenched visibly, betraying her agitation. Clearly, she had never considered this possibility before.
Kyubey continued mockingly, "You've done me a great service, Homura. You've cultivated Madoka into the strongest Witch for me."
During the tenth episode's broadcast, some viewers had been puzzled by why Madoka, the Main Character, initially possessed such mediocre magical girl potential, only to grow progressively stronger, eventually distorting the very laws of reality.
Now, with Kyubey's explanation, everyone understood.
It all came down to causality.
To be fair, it made perfect sense.
This explanation also clarified why Homura's repeated loops through time had failed to save Madoka.
However, the moment this revelation hit, those who had clung to the hope of a healing ending for the animation couldn't help but feel a sense of dread.
It seemed the "healing ending" was likely a deception. According to Kyubey's explanation, the situation Homura faced was fundamentally unsolvable, destined to end in complete collapse.
After the opening and ending credits, the story continued on television.
Sayaka's body was discovered by the police.
The Main Character attended the funeral. When she returned home, her mother asked if she really knew nothing. She nodded and retreated to her room.
Lying on her bed, she quietly mourned the deaths of Sayaka and Kyoko.
At that moment, Kyubey suddenly appeared, claiming that their deaths had been foreshadowed long ago.
The Main Character sprang up from the bed, condemning Kyubey. But it retorted, "Do you feel ashamed in the presence of livestock?"
Using livestock as an analogy, Kyubey argued that the Incubators didn't treat humans as mere livestock. Instead, they negotiated with them on the basis of their intelligence, seeing no problem with this approach.
According to Kyubey, the Incubators had been interfering with human civilization for ages. Throughout history, many girls had signed contracts with them, becoming magical girls only to transform into Witches. Some of these individuals had even influenced the course of history.
At Homura Akemi's home:
The Main Character, drenched to the bone, arrived to see Homura Akemi.
"Is it dangerous out there?" she asked Homura Akemi.
"Unlike the Witches we've faced before, this one doesn't need to hide in a Barrier to protect itself. A single manifestation would cost thousands of lives, yet ordinary people can't see it as usual. They'd probably mistake the damage for a natural disaster like an earthquake or tornado," Homura replied.
"We have to defeat it, right? Kyoko is dead, and you're the only magical girl left who can fight. So..." The Main Character felt she had to become a magical girl herself to help Homura.
But before she could finish, Homura interrupted, "One person is enough! Even if Sakura Kyoko couldn't handle it, I could repel the Walpurgisnight alone. I didn't really need Kyoko's support—I just gave her a little face."
"Why is that? I want to believe you, Homura, I really don't want to think you're lying. But I can't help but feel uneasy, unable to accept that you're telling the truth." The Main Character was filled with doubt.
Homura Akemi stood with her back to the Main Character, gritting her teeth, clenching her fists, and desperately restraining herself. But in the end, she couldn't help but say, "How could I possibly tell you my true feelings?"
"Homura?" The Main Character was taken aback.
"Because... you and Madoka... we were living in different timelines!" Homura could no longer hold back. She spun around and rushed toward the Main Character, throwing her arms around her.
This sudden, intense emotion was a stark contrast to Homura's usual cold demeanor, leaving the Main Character momentarily stunned.
Tears streaming down her face, Homura whispered, "I... I came from the future. I've met Madoka countless times, and each time, I've witnessed your death. I've lived through it again and again, trying to find a way to save you, to change your fate. Just to find that answer, I've started over countless times."
"So... huh?" The Main Character was suddenly struggling to process this.
"I'm sorry, this must seem so strange, right? So disgusting? To Madoka, I'm just a transfer student she's known for less than a month. But to me... to me, you're..."
Homura Akemi's tears streamed down her face as she choked out, "With each repetition, the time we spend together drifts further apart. Our feelings diverge, our words become incomprehensible. I think... I lost my way long ago."
Images from alternate timelines flickered in the background, accompanied by a gentle piano melody, amplifying the emotional weight of her words.
A close-up of Homura's Soul Gem appeared, its purple surface still emitting a faint glow.
At the same time, Homura continued, "'To save you'—that was my original intention. Now, it's the only landmark I have left. It doesn't matter if you don't understand, if nothing I say gets through. Even so, I must... Please, let me protect you."
After this scene, the narrative finally shifted to the Walpurgisnight.
The storm was imminent, the sky as dark as a funeral shroud, as if the end of the world were about to arrive.
Under the direction of the municipal authorities, the Main Character and her family sought refuge in a shelter. Meanwhile, Homura stood alone outside, preparing to face the Walpurgisnight.
"This time... I'll end it for good!"
She muttered to herself, and after transforming into a magical girl, she immediately unleashed a barrage of weapons against the Walpurgisnight.
She bombarded it with every kind of ammunition and even commandeered a car, driving it straight into the Walpurgisnight and detonating it.
She employed every means at her disposal, the explosions raining down in a spectacular, chaotic battle.
Yet the Walpurgisnight proved too powerful. These conventional tactics were utterly ineffective, and Homura Akemi soon suffered a devastating blow.
Inside the shelter, feeling the tremors, the Main Character made an excuse to slip out.
Outside, she asked Kyubey if Homura Akemi could really win fighting the Walpurgisnight alone.
This time, Kyubey didn't hold back: "For her now, standing still is equivalent to giving up. Nothing she does can change the outcome. Madoka's fate will never change. The moment she loses hope, she'll become a Grief Seed, won't she? She knows this herself, so she has no choice. Even without a chance of winning, she must fight."
Upon learning the truth, the Main Character cast aside all hesitation and rushed to find Homura Akemi.
Meanwhile, Homura Akemi continued battling the Walpurgisnight. In just a moment, she was severely wounded, a massive stone slab pinning down one of her legs.
She struggled twice but couldn't break free.
"Why? Why is it like this?! No matter how many times I try, I can't defeat that thing."
Homura Akemi, filled with despair and anger, saw that she could no longer continue fighting and resigned herself to entering the next loop.
Just as she was about to activate her ability, Kyubey's words suddenly came to mind.
"If this repeats, the causal weight on Madoka will increase by the same amount. What I've done... in the end..."
She leaned weakly against the pile of rubble, sobbing in despair.
A mournful soundtrack swelled, amplifying the atmosphere of a hero's final moments.
The Soul Gem on the back of her hand, corroded by her despair, was gradually being consumed by corruption.
As the corruption was about to engulf the entire Soul Gem, a single tear fell. At that critical moment, the Main Character, guided by Kyubey, found her and grasped her hand.
The music abruptly stopped, and the corruption's advance halted.
"It's enough, Homura."
The Main Character said gently, then released Homura's hand, stood up, and turned to face the distant Walpurgisnight.
Homura glanced at the Walpurgisnight once more before shifting her gaze to Kyubey beside her.
Kyubey blinked silently, then took two steps forward and stood beside the Main Character.
"Madoka, you don't mean..." Homura gasped, realizing what the Main Character was about to do.
The Main Character, who had been facing away from Homura, turned around to look at her, her expression tender as she smiled. "Homura, I'm sorry."
The ED sequence began, and the eleventh episode ended at this pivotal moment.
