On the metal workbench, welding sparks sizzled and crackled.
Wearing goggles, Jinx was studying an alien control panel flashing with red lights.
One moment she was swinging a wrench, hammering away at the panel's circuitry, and the next, on a whim, she grabbed a spray can and painted a tongue-out Bomb head on that expensive Chitauri component.
How did this scene look anything like cutting-edge scientific research? It looked more like a little girl who hadn't grown up messing around.
However, that was exactly how Jinx had figured out Hextech back then... One could only say, mind your own business when it comes to beautiful girls!
Anyone else seeing this waste of precious materials would have had a heart attack, but Lux, sitting opposite her, didn't care at all. She leaned on the workbench, resting her chin in her hands, her big eyes staring at Jinx with great interest.
So cute.
There is never a shortage of topics between young girls, it's just that...
When these two actually started chatting, their content couldn't be said to be identical; it was more like they were worlds apart.
"I'm telling you, those court etiquette teachers in Demacia are so annoying!"
Lux swung her fair calves, complaining incessantly.
"You can't show your teeth when you smile, your skirt can't sway past a certain angle when you walk... If my brother hadn't tacitly allowed me to sneak out, I would have been driven crazy by them long ago! And there's my aunt who leads troops in battle; she's very fierce, but she's quite good to me..."
"Tch, that's nothing."
Jinx flipped up her goggles and gave a disdainful snort. "In the sewers of Zaun, if you dare take a wrong step, you might get a chunk of flesh bitten off by a Shimmer addict in an alley... and there's green poisonous gas everywhere, and rats the size of half a man!"
"Ah? I'm most afraid of rats..."
Lux shrank her neck in fear, her small face full of revulsion.
"But I wouldn't be afraid if it were made of Petricite. Big guy Galio knows many Petricite statue friends, and one of them is a stone rat even bigger than an off-road vehicle! It's so cute and goofy. If there's a chance, I'll take you to ride it!"
Jinx's eyebrows shot up, her innate mischievousness immediately bubbling up.
"Sure, in exchange, if there's a chance, how about I take you to the sewers of Zaun to catch rats?"
"I don't want to!"
Lux puffed out her cheeks petulantly and reached out to give Jinx's arm a light slap. "You're so mean!"
Seeing the blonde girl's aggrieved yet slightly flirtatious look, Jinx doubled over laughing, completely ignoring her image.
Even though they were describing lives the other had never experienced, when these two girls with completely different styles got together, they were surprisingly harmonious, bursting into fits of lighthearted laughter from time to time.
Not far away, Toomes and the others, who were miserably grinding parts, heard the crisp laughter and stopped their work. They couldn't help but exchange a quiet glance. At this moment, Toomes rarely felt...
That this moody little lunatic was actually just an ordinary adolescent girl.
"Oh, right!"
As they chatted, Lux seemed to suddenly remember something important. She clapped her hands and leaned in close to Jinx. "You're cooped up in this Underground Room all day, don't you feel suffocated? Do you want to go out shopping with me for some fresh air?"
"I've made plans with Big Sister Su Modie, Big Sister Reze, and another sister!"
"Ha? Shopping?"
The smile on Jinx's face vanished instantly, her head shaking like a rattle.
Why call her for something like that?
If Jinx were told to blow a city to smithereens, she wouldn't even blink. But to have her learn to be like an ordinary girl her age, hanging out with three or five sisters, trying on clothes in a mall, drinking milk tea, and buying bags?
That would be more painful for her than being killed!
Jinx looked down at her tattered black strapped crop top, then at the blue graffiti tattoos covering her arms.
This punk-style outfit was a bit too conspicuous even for New York... she might even be questioned by the patrol police!
This was no small matter, especially since Jinx was an undocumented resident. Plus, S.H.I.E.L.D. was currently on edge because of the Battle of New York, fearing that a bunch of unheard-of superhumans might pop up in New York again.
"Not going, not interested," Jinx refused decisively, making a move to pull her goggles back down.
Lux didn't feel disappointed upon hearing this. Instead, she cupped Jinx's small face in her hands, preventing her from putting the goggles back on.
They were both incarnations of Su Modie, and there was naturally a telepathic connection between them.
Seeing that the blonde young lady was about to use that "clingy spoiled brat" move that gave people goosebumps, Jinx's eye twitched, and she quickly raised her hands in surrender. "Stop, stop, stop! Cut it out! Put away that mushy expression. I'll go, I'll go, okay!"
Lux immediately gave a sweet smile and made a victory sign.
However, Jinx was no pushover. Her mischievous streak surfaced, and she immediately pointed to the partially disassembled panel on the workbench, adding in a drawn-out tone.
"I can go, but only after I finish dealing with this damn Chitauri signal transmitter."
"If this thing is fixed, it can send a signal into outer space, but I don't know exactly how far."
Lux's face fell. "Ah? How long will that take?"
Hehe." Jinx grinned, revealing two small canines, and uttered three words righteously, "I don't know."
She was clearly trying to back out.
Lux was so angry she crossed her arms, her cheeks puffing out like a pufferfish. But then her eyes darted around, and she suddenly held up a fair, slender finger, gritting her teeth as she said, "Go now, go immediately! As long as you come with me right now, I'll promise you one condition!"
Jinx's purple-red eyes instantly lit up. "Oh? Really? Any condition?"
"Yes! Any con—"
Before Lux could finish the word "condition," her voice came to a screeching halt.
Because in that instant, through the unique mental link between incarnations, she had keenly captured the mischievous, or even insane, condition in Jinx's mind!
With a whoosh.
Lux's fair, pretty face instantly turned beet red, even her ears were flushed. She jumped back like a cat whose tail had been stepped on. "That is absolutely not okay! What kind of messy things are in your head, you brat? How can you be so bad!"
Jinx curled her lip, looking like an indifferent rogue as she tossed the wrench onto the table. "If it's no good, then forget it. Anyway, Big Sister Reze didn't actively call me. I'd rather stay here and grind machines with these bald old men."
Seeing Jinx's unyielding stance, Lux stood there struggling for a long time.
Finally, as if she had made some kind of decision, she closed her eyes and let out an incredibly humiliated, long sigh.
"Fine! I... I promise you!"
