Chapter 119: Cursed Ghosts

"Ghosts are the traces left behind by wizards who died filled with resentment." Only now did George truly grasp the weight behind those words. When he thought about the thousands upon thousands of ghosts in the world, each one representing a wizard consumed by grief, a chill ran through him.

What kind of unbearable sorrow lay hidden behind such a terrifying force?

Even George, who was usually indifferent, couldn't help clenching his fists.

Not everyone could perceive these frightening truths. Harry and the others were slowly wandering along the edge of the dance floor. Their experience and understanding were far too limited to see what lay beneath the surface—they were simply children attending what seemed like a strange but fascinating party.

They passed a group of gloomy nuns sitting together, then a ragged man bound in chains.

They also saw a familiar face—the Fat Friar, Hufflepuff's ghost. He was cheerful and friendly, making it hard to imagine he had died with resentment rather than peacefully. He was chatting with a knight who had an arrow stuck through his head.

Then there was the Bloody Baron, Slytherin's ghost, a figure of great prestige among ghosts. Thin, with hollow eyes and covered in silvery blood, he inspired fear wherever he went. Other ghosts instinctively made way for him.

"Oh no…" Hermione suddenly stopped. "Let's go back. I don't want to see Moaning Myrtle, and I definitely don't want to talk to her."

"Who's that?" Harry asked, confused. He couldn't imagine someone scary enough to make Hermione want to flee.

"She's the ghost who lives in the girls' bathroom on the first floor," Hermione said irritably.

"There's a ghost in a bathroom?" Ron thought he'd misheard. "How is that even allowed?"

"Yes! That bathroom breaks down every few days because Myrtle throws tantrums and floods the place. I avoid it whenever I can. You have no idea how awful it is. She screams at you while you're trying to use it—it's terrifying!"

Hermione rarely sounded this distressed, which said a lot about how dreadful Myrtle must be.

"I can imagine," George said sympathetically. "If a ghost screamed at me while I was in the bathroom, I'd hit it with a killing curse and shut it up for good."

"Can a killing curse actually destroy a ghost?" Hermione asked curiously, clearly intrigued.

Harry and Ron stared at her, stunned. Was she serious? They exchanged uneasy looks, but Hermione's expression showed genuine interest.

George studied her for a moment before replying, "The killing curse isn't something you should be learning right now. But there are plenty of spells that can deal with ghosts. I can teach you how to silence them, drive them away—even attack them."

Although ghosts were intangible, they weren't invincible. Otherwise, the world would have long since been overrun by them. Because they couldn't fully interact with reality, they rarely posed a direct threat.

"They exist on a kind of different frequency," George continued. "Like radio waves. To interact with them, you need to match that frequency. With the right magic, you can push them away—or even destroy them completely."

In fact, some existing spells already had effects on ghosts. The Patronus Charm, while unable to destroy them outright, could still harm them. And certain soul-targeting curses could eliminate them entirely.

"Maybe we should talk about this somewhere else," Harry said awkwardly. "Discussing how to deal with ghosts in the middle of a ghost party feels… risky."

He was interested in those spells too—especially if there was a way to deal with Peeves—but talking about it here made him uneasy, as if someone might be listening.

Hermione's eyes lit up. She was clearly satisfied with the answer. If she could just endure Myrtle a little longer…

After all, it wasn't just her—many older girls had suffered from Myrtle's harassment.

If ghosts behaved themselves, they were harmless. But if they decided to cause trouble, it was a nightmare.

Hermione had tried everything described in books—crosses, chants, spells, garlic, sunlight—but none of it worked.

Those things couldn't harm ghosts, yet ghosts could easily frighten people.

Imagine going to the bathroom and suddenly having a ghost appear silently behind you, wailing in your ear. Late at night, someone might even be scared enough to fall into a toilet. Myrtle would splash water everywhere, cause chaos, then play the victim and burst into tears.

She had caused far too much fear and misery at Hogwarts—she was practically a menace.

Thinking about it, Hermione became even more interested in the idea of a killing curse. If she could actually do it…

It might save every girl in the school.

Seeing the obvious resentment on Hermione's face, even Harry and Ron—protected by the elemental resistance spell—felt a chill run down their spines.

They quickly realized it was best not to let her think too deeply about it. At this rate, she might pull out her wand and start attacking Myrtle on the spot.

"Hey, look—there's food over there," Ron said quickly, scanning the room for a distraction.
