Chapter 20 - The Succubus

Lyra's POV

The adrenaline crash didn't feel like a crash. It felt like a slow, burning fever.

My apartment was quiet. The kids were asleep, passed out in a pile of limbs and blankets on the master bed. They hadn't even bothered to change out of their pilot suits. I'd wiped the grease from their faces, kissed their foreheads, and closed the door.

Safe.

They were safe.

I walked into the living room. It was dark, lit only by the city lights filtering through the shattered balcony door—a souvenir from the earlier shootout.

I should have been exhausted. My muscles should have been screaming. I'd fought a bio-weapon, dismantled a conspiracy, and revealed my biggest secret to the one man who could destroy me.

But I wasn't tired.

I was... buzzing.

My skin felt tight. Too sensitive. The fabric of my silk robe rubbed against my nerves like sandpaper. The air tasted thick, sweet, heavy.

"You're pacing," a voice said from the shadows.

Damon.

He was sitting on my couch. He'd stayed. Of course he'd stayed. After I'd walked away at the docks, he'd followed us home, posted his guards at the perimeter, and then simply walked through my front door like he owned the place.

I hadn't stopped him.

"I'm not pacing," I said. My voice sounded strange. Husky. Different. "I'm thinking."

"You're prowling," he corrected.

He held up a bottle. My bottle. A vintage whiskey I'd been saving for a special occasion. Survival seemed special enough.

"Drink?" he offered.

I stopped. I looked at him. Really looked at him.

He'd ditched the ruined suit jacket. His white shirt was unbuttoned halfway down his chest, sleeves rolled up. I could see the dark ink of a tattoo peeking out from his collarbone. I knew that tattoo. A storm cloud. I'd traced it with my tongue once.

The memory hit me like a physical blow. Heat pooled in my belly, spreading downward.

"Yes," I said.

I walked over. He poured a glass. I took it, my fingers brushing his.

Sparks. Literal, visible sparks.

Damon hissed, pulling his hand back. "Static," he muttered.

"Is it?" I asked.

I downed the whiskey in one swallow. It burned, but the fire inside me was hotter.

I sat down. Not on the armchair across from him. On the couch. Next to him.

Close enough to smell him. Rain and ozone and male musk. It was intoxicating. Better than the whiskey.

"Lyra," he said. His voice was a warning. A low rumble in his chest.

"What?" I leaned in.

My vision was blurring at the edges. Not from alcohol. From something else. Something ancient in my blood that had been woken up by the violence, by the danger, by the sheer proximity of an Alpha Prime.

My mother's blood.

The Siren. The Succubus. The creature that fed on desire.

"You're not yourself," Damon said. He set his glass down. His muscles were tense, corded beneath the thin shirt. "The fight... it triggered something. Your scent has changed."

"Has it?" I whispered. "Does it smell bad?"

"No." He closed his eyes, inhaling sharply. "It smells like sin. Like everything I've wanted for six years."

"Then why are you sitting so far away?"

I moved. A fluid, boneless shift. I wasn't thinking. I was reacting. Responding to the pull of the bond, the hunger of the blood. It felt like a current dragging me under. My skin was on fire. My heart was a drum beating a rhythm I couldn't ignore.

I straddled his lap.

The movement was pure instinct. Predatory. Needy.

Damon froze. His hands hovered near my waist, not touching, but ready to catch. Or push. His thighs were hard beneath me, warm rock against my fevered skin.

"Lyra," he gritted out. "Get off."

"Make me."

I ran my hands up his chest. The cotton of his shirt was crisp under my palms. Beneath it, his heart was hammering. A frantic, heavy rhythm.

Thump-thump. Thump-thump.

It matched mine. It synced with mine.

"Your heart is fast," I whispered. My voice dropped an octave, vibrating with something that wasn't quite human. A purr. A Siren's call.

"Because you're testing my control," he growled. His eyes were dark, pupils blown wide, swallowing the gold. "You're high on adrenaline. You're drunk. The bio-weapon residue... it's interacting with your bloodline. You don't know what you're doing."

"I know exactly what I'm doing," I murmured.

I leaned forward. My lips brushed the hollow of his throat. He tasted like salt and power. I could feel his pulse jumping against my mouth.

"I'm claiming my territory."

I poked his chest. Right over his heart. "This spot. Is it mine?"

Damon shuddered. A tremor ran through his entire body. His hands clenched into fists at his sides, knuckles white gripping the couch cushions. He was fighting it. Fighting himself. I could feel the battle raging inside him—the wolf wanting to take, the man wanting to protect.

"Lyra, stop," he said. His voice was strained, tight with restraint. "If I touch you now... I won't stop. I'll take everything. And tomorrow, you'll hate me."

"I already hate you," I lied. The words lacked heat. They were just words. My body knew the truth.

I reached for his tie. A strip of dark silk, still loosely knotted around his neck. I wrapped it around my hand. Yanked.

He came forward, our faces inches apart. His breath hitched. It was ragged, hot against my cheek.

"You play with fire, little wolf," he warned. "You think this is a game? You're waking up something you can't control."

"I AM the fire," I whispered against his lips.

I kissed him.

It wasn't gentle. It was a collision. A demand. I bit his lower lip, tasting iron. He groaned, a sound torn from the depths of his soul. A primal noise that made my own blood sing.

His resolve snapped.

His hands found my hips. Big, hot, possessive hands. He didn't push me away. He pulled me closer, grinding me against him. The friction was electric. Points of contact flared hot—where his fingers dug into my waist, where my chest pressed against his.

"Mine," he growled against my mouth. The word was a growl, a claim, a prayer.

"Yours," I panted.

He kissed me back. Devoured me. His tongue swept into my mouth, claiming, tasting, branding. It was messy and desperate and perfect. He tasted of whiskey and repressed longing. Of six years of silence.

My fingers tangled in his hair, pulling him closer, deeper. I wanted to crawl inside his skin. I wanted to burn him down until he was nothing but ash and desire.

For a moment, there was no war. No Council. No lies. Just this. Just the heat. Just us.

Then he stopped.

He tore his mouth away, breathing hard. His chest heaved against mine. He rested his forehead against mine, his eyes squeezed shut.

"No," he whispered. The word cost him. I could hear the jagged edge of it.

"Damon?" I whimpered, the loss of contact physically painful. It felt like a limb being severed.

"I can't," he said. His voice was rough, broken. "Not like this. Not when you're... compromised. Not when you're staring at me but seeing a heat source."

He lifted me. Effortlessly. He set me back on the couch, creating a safe distance between us. His movements were jerky, careful, as if he were handling a bomb.

He stood up. He ran a hand through his hair, messing up the perfect style. He paced away from me, towards the broken balcony door. He looked like a man in pain. A man who had just walked through fire and refused to look at the burns.

"You need sleep," he said, not looking at me. "You need to sober up. You need to be Lyra. Not this... creature."

I stared at him. My body was humming with unspent energy, aching and empty. My skin felt too tight.

"You're rejecting me," I said dulling. The heat in my blood turned to ice. "Again."

He spun around. The look on his face stopped my heart. It was raw. Naked.

"I am saving us," he said fiercely. "Six years ago, I ruined us because I didn't know what you were. I didn't cherish you. I took what was offered without understanding the value. I won't make that mistake again."

He walked to the door. He didn't look back.

"Lock the door, Lyra. Go to sleep."

He walked out.

I sat there in the dark. The fire in my blood began to cool, replaced by a cold, hollow ache.

I touched my lips. They were swollen. Bruised.

He could have had me. I practically threw myself at him. And he walked away.

Because he wanted me. All of me. Not just the body. Not just the Succubus.

He wanted Lyra.

I curled up on the couch, pulling his discarded jacket around me. It smelled like him.

"Idiot," I whispered into the darkness.

But for the first time in six years, I fell asleep without a weapon in my hand.
