Chapter 9 - THE NEW GENERAL ARRIVES

A couple days later…

Deep sleep was troubling, especially for me. "What's up man." It was quiet, but I just barely heard it. That voice was familiar, and it was particular to me. I heard Yoshi, then I turned towards the source of the sound.

His usual blonde hair was dirtied, covered with maggots and blood.

He looked normal, other than his hair. "Yoshi.." I spoke, breaking the silence, and in such a short glimpse of him, everything was blurry. The tears fell.

"Why me?" Yoshi spoke too, moving closer towards me. His eyes slowly turned black, as if his eye balls were missing and his eye sockets were hollowed out. The skin on his face darkened and became colorless. As if he were a walking corpse, steadily becoming one with me.

I stumbled back, but it's like I didn't move at all. No it was because I couldn't move at all, I was immobilized. I turned my attention towards Yoshi again, terrified by his unsettling appearance.

Yoshi frowned, opening his mouth as I watched it expand beyond human capability.

"Why me Yohan? Why wasn't it you!" Yoshi's words echoed through my head, and my heart pounded harder.

Tears continued to fall, leaving streaks running down my cheeks. Yoshi looked at me with his horrifying face, my body trembled feeling the extreme weight of guilt. My chest heaved with uncontrollable sobs, I felt like Yoshi's death was entirely on me.

The figure that looked like Yoshi was no longer him, its body changed. Shifting into that shifter, the same one who brutally mutilated him in cold blood.

"It's your fault, YOUR fault." The shifter shrieked.

But my eyes were closed, not wanting to look at that thing any longer. When the shrieking stopped, I opened them, waking up staring at the ceiling.

Oh.. the nightmare is over.. I thought, realising it wasn't real.

I sat up, propping my elbows against the mattress. The looming weight of today was especially powerful.

I got out of bed, standing in front of my mirror. The trail of tears still present on my cheeks, I wiped my face, heading out of my room towards my bathroom.

I opened the door and turned on the light. I leaned over the sink before I ran the water, waiting for it to heat up. I grabbed my tooth brush, brushed my teeth and gurgled using mouthwash. I then cupped my hands, holding water up to my face before splashing it on me.

I grabbed a towel to wipe the excess water from my face, hanging it back up before opening the door, and switching the light off before closing it afterwards.

I made my way to the kitchen, sitting at the table. I thought hard, pondering questions I should've thought about a long time ago.

My main question was why they recruit children, including us.. We're all either first or second years.

I wondered if Zhou, Shaun, or even Sensei Zuh were recruited as children, and if they were, why?

 Why mainly children?

My suspicions weren't only why children were sent to fight monsters, but who's giving the orders too.

"There has to be some kind of group of higherups." I said, clenching my hands.

"They send children to fight these 'shifters', and don't care about the consequences that come with it."

A few feet besides me I heard footsteps, I turned knowing it was Anya waking up and walking to the kitchen.

"Hey Yohan, what were you talking about?" She said, rubbing her eyes, still yawning.

I smiled, seeing her brought me temporary joy. "Sorry, did I wake you?" I said standing up.

"Not at all, but how are you doing?" She said, stretching her arms.

"I'm fine, don't worry about me." I said, grabbing an apple from the fruit bowl.

"I'll always worry about you, you're my friend Yohan." She said, with a worried look.

"Yeah.." I said, lowering my head.

I walked towards Anya, holding her hand. "I'm sorry, for being so weak." I said.

"What? You're not weak, you're the strongest person I know." Anya said, rubbing my arm.

"No, I failed you two.. And I'm the one who dragged you both into this mess." I said, lifting her hand to my face.

I held her hand in both of mine, looking into her padparadscha colored eyes. "I promise to keep you safe Anya.." I said, letting go of her hand.

She smiled warmly, nodding her head. "And I promise to stay by your side, always." She said, hugging me. Her head rested against my chest, she smiled feeling my racing heartbeat.

My arms held her, shading slightly red at the immediate contact. But she felt warm, and safe in my arms.

She pulled out of the hug, looking up at me. A soft, gentle smile touched her lips. What I felt was genuine love.

"We have to meet in the meeting room. The President is giving an announcement, we have to be there in 20 minutes." Anya relayed to me.

"Oh, what is it for?" I asked.

"I don't know, no one does. Guess we'll have to find out." She said, walking to her bathroom.

"Get ready, I'll be waiting for you." She said before closing the door.

I nodded, walking to my room.

I dressed myself, putting on my cargo pants and white shirt. I stepped in my shoes, heading to the front door. Anya was there waiting for me, she wore retro blue denim pants, with a pink japanese cardigan, and platform wedge sandals. She had her hair up in gyaru style, matching her original brown hair with her blonde highlights. She was truly beautiful.

She looks so cute.. I thought, nervously stepping towards her.

"Are you ready?" She said, waddling in a cute way.

"Yeah, let's go before we're late." I said, opening the door for her, walking out together.

The meeting wasn't too far from the dorms, only taking us a few minutes to get there. We saw people entering the building we were headed to, following inside.

Anya and I stuck together, as we sat in our rowed seats. In front of us was a huge stage, with curtains blocking whatever was behind.

Soldiers around us whispered about why they were summoned, some making comments about the death of a young kid who was on a mission. They stared at us, gossiping about what really went down. Some of what was mentioned was mainly negative, some just speculation. They knew we were on that mission too.

"Poor kid, he was so young too." "I know right, who even made the order to send those kids." "I hope we won't end up like them." The voices of multiple soldiers whispered among us, some adults, others most kids our age.

Anya looked up towards me, nudging my arm. "They're talking about us.." Her voice was hitched, but soft nonetheless.

"Don't worry Anya, just ignore them." I said. Even though their words angered me, I couldn't let it get to me for Yoshi's sake.

The lights dimmed surrounding the entire room, while the stage stayed lit. President Abara made his appearance, grabbing the microphone standing on the stage.

"Attention, everyone. I have a special announcement." The President spoke with a commanding tone, behind him was a man nearly taller than President Abara.

Though I couldn't quite tell who he was, due to his large trench coat covering him.

"Your announcement better be why a kid died last week!" A soldier in the crowd said, the man stood raising his fist into the air.

But President Abara stayed calm, staring at the man. He then spoke. "His name was Yoshi, he was on Team D along with Yohan, and Anya. I am deeply sorry for his passing, but as a soldier, his death is not in vain." Abara said, stepping to the edge of the stage.

"Whether or not the grade of the mission, I made a choice. I send kids who are given the opportunity to become soldiers, our world isn't the same it was 200 years ago. It has changed, and we must fend for the future of our soldiers, and those who come after." Abara said, taking full accountability for the choice he had made.

That's when I saw the man behind the President, smile. His face was still a mystery, but I was able to clearly see his sly grin.

Abara backed up, returning behind the mic stand. He turned, moving his arm towards the man in the back no one else seemed to notice. "Welcome, General Rescin." Abara said, as the man walked towards him handing him the mic.

General Rescin took the mic from President Abara, putting it up to his mouth. He spoke in a somewhat robotic and monotone voice, but it didn't sound right.

"I know you all are nervous about the late passing of that young man, but we all have a duty. Our duty is to protect civilians, and destroy shifters." Rescin's speech started inspiring some of the soldiers, causing them to chant.

"Follow me, and we will take down those grotesque monsters." He raised his arm in the air, encouraging their chanting.

Anya stared with annoyance in her eyes, the soldiers who were chanting clearly didn't care about the lives being lost nearly everyday.

But I wasn't feeding into their bullshit any longer, General Rescin was a mysterious man. Someone that couldn't be trusted.

General Rescin handed the mic back to President Abara, standing behind him once more. Soldiers sat back down, as Abara spoke out. "Thank you for attending, that'll be all."

Everyone got up, walking out of the room while conversing. "You okay?" I said to Anya, holding her hand. She replied, by nodding her head.

"Hi, remember me?" The two girls from earlier stepped in front of us, Yuuina spoke to me with a warm smile.

I looked at her, then to Anya nervously. The other girl, Nene, seemed clingy against Yuuina. She had her eyes closed, as if she was sleeping.

"Yes, Hi..?" I spoke finally breaking the awkward tension, but Anya just glared at Yuuina.

"I just wanted to ask you, if you'd wanna maybe meet me somewhere tonight?" She shyly asked, kind of staring off at her hands.

I paused for a moment, looking at Anya subtly. I turned back to Yuuina, nodding my head. "Sure, but where and when?" Anya let go of my hand, crossing her arms.

I could feel her sudden annoyance with Yuuina and I talking, but I didn't want to cause a scene right then. "We'll meet in the lounge near the dorms, and at 10 PM." Yuuina answered, smiling at me once again.

"Okay, see you then." I replied, walking past her behind Anya. Yuuina smiled, waving me off. Once we were out of sight, she scoffed, rolling her eyes. "That girl next to him was eyeing me the whole time, she's in my way." Yuuina was pissed, clearly jealous of Anya's presence. Nene opened her eyes, smiling while her chin rested on Yuuina's shoulder.

"Don't worry, I'll deal with her." Nene giggled, falling back asleep. Yuuina sighed, as she carried her back to their dormitory.

Entering our dorm, Anya stepped in front of me. Halting me from walking forward, she put her hand on my chest. "Who was she?" Anya asked, firmly keeping me pressed against the wall.

"Uhm, she's one of the older soldiers, for some reason she stopped by my room sometime ago." I responded, placing my hand over hers.

She moved her hand, freeing me from her deadly grip. I stepped forward a little, placing my hands on her shoulders. "Don't worry, it's nothing like that." I reassured her.

She pouted, looking away. But she nodded nonetheless, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand. She walked to her room, slamming the door behind her.

I sighed, knowing I wasn't going to see the end of this. Regardless I waited until it was time, sitting on the couch.

 Hours go by…

I walked outside, heading to the lounge. Sitting on a bench in front of the building was Yuuina, she wore a white crop top, with a jacket, and pink short skirt that matched her hair. I was a little nonplussed by her appearance, sitting next to her slowly before looking at her again. "You look eventful.." I carefully kept my eyes on her face rather than her lips or body.

"Thank you!" She replied, smiling with excitement. She twirled her thumb around her fingers, clearly nervous at our current awkwardness. "So, what did you want to talk about?" I spoke first, easing the atmosphere. "I wanted to know about you, who you truly are." She scooted closer towards me, her thigh practically touching mine.

I stayed calm, not bringing any unnecessary attention to myself. "Oh, that's it?" I asked. I expected she wanted more, like insight on what happened on our mission.

"Yeah, so why did you come here?" She asked, placing her hand on my thigh. I tensed, feeling that rush of embarrassment flow through me. "U-uhm, I was brought here.. I didn't really have a choice." I replied, moving her hand from my thigh.

She frowned briefly before picking back up on our conversation, "Ah, I heard you were fighting a shifter and then they recruited you." She chuckled, hovering her hand over her mouth.

"Not at all, I'm not that strong." I tapped my foot repeatedly against the ground. "I bet you're really strong, probably stronger than Inouye." Yuuina spoke. She leaned forward, her lips near my ear. "Are you single?" She asked me, to which I nodded my head.

"But, I'm not really looking for anything.." I said, nervously moving my head away. Yuuina looked annoyed, leaning back from me. "Whatever.." She stood up, groaning in frustration.

I watched in confusion, standing up myself. "You probably like that girl that was with you earlier huh? Well she's not even that cute, I'm way better.." Yuuina rambled on and on about herself, and how much better she was for me than Anya. Then I heard a strange noise behind us somewhere hidden by the bushes, it sounded like white noise, but muffled. Trying to focus on that noise, I put my hand over Yuuina's mouth. "Shh.. I think someone's watching us." I whispered, holding her arm. She immediately stopped her muffled protests, looking around for anything suspicious.

I closed my eyes, searching for any Yon signatures. But I couldn't sense anything, and that's when the noise stopped. Whoever was watching us, had vanished.

I let her go, pulling back. Yuuina glared at the bushes behind us, pointing towards them. "I sensed something there before it vanished." Yuuina seemed to have better senses than even Yoshi. We ran over to the area she sensed the stalker, and when we got there. No one was in sight. "The person must've fled." Yuuina said.

"And they're fast.. No way they escaped us that quickly." I said. We looked at each other, she rubbed her arm looking at the ground. "Sorry about earlier, I just got a little angry." She said, looking at me.

"It's fine, and I'm sorry too.. For wasting your time." I replied. She chuckled, grabbing my hand. "Oh I don't give up easily, I'll see you again later." She turned slowly, feeling my arm before letting go. She walked to her dorm, waving goodbye.

I sighed, turning towards my dorm. I walked there shortly after, and I headed straight into my room. I closed the door, sitting on my bed. I wonder who that was, whoever it was, is really fast. I thought to myself, laying down.

Something was going down, and I was going to find out what.
