Chapter 31 - Chapter 31: Counteroffensive

Sera's plan was insane.

"You want to infiltrate a military command center," Akira said, staring at the tactical map she'd laid out in the conference room. "Extract intelligence on the hardliners coordinating the assaults. And neutralize their leadership before the second wave launches."

"Correct."

"That's suicide."

"It's aggressive. There's a difference." Sera zoomed in on a government building in central Tokyo. "This is their coordination hub—confirmed by intelligence Yoshida provided. Small security detail, mostly administrative personnel. They're not expecting a strike because manifested have been purely defensive."

"Because we're trying to prove we're not threats."

"And it's not working. Yoshida said it herself—public opinion is swinging toward fear despite our restraint. So we change tactics. We demonstrate capability without actually harming civilians. Precision strike, intelligence extraction, tactical withdrawal."

Colonel Tanaka studied the plan with professional assessment. "It could work. Small team, manifested with stealth and combat abilities. In and out before they mobilize response."

"Or it fails spectacularly and gives them perfect justification for total elimination," Dr. Nakamura countered. "Manifested attacking government facility? That's declaring war."

"They already declared war. We're just responding in kind."

The debate continued, arguments flowing back and forth. Akira listened through the Link to Lyria, who was still in medical but conscious and alert.

What do you think? he sent privately.

I think we're trapped between bad options. Defend and die slowly, attack and maybe die faster but on our terms. Her presence through the Link was stronger now, synchronization climbing back toward perfect. But if we're going to die anyway, I'd rather go down fighting than waiting.

We're not going to die.

Prove it. Make the plan work.

Akira focused back on the tactical discussion. "Sera, walk me through it step by step. How does this actually work without getting everyone killed?"

She pulled up detailed schematics. "Team of six. Kael for infiltration—they can phase through walls, bypass physical security. Hana for illusions—make us invisible to cameras and guards. Kaede for combat if things go wrong. Me for tactical coordination. And you."

"Why me?"

"Because your Reality Anchor enhances everyone, and because you're the face of manifested integration. If we're caught, having you there frames it as diplomatic engagement gone wrong rather than terrorist attack."

"That's a thin justification."

"It's all we have."

Colonel Tanaka added tactical details. "You'd go in during shift change—17:00 hours, maximum confusion, minimum personnel. Extract data on the hardliners' assault plans, communication protocols, force disposition. Twenty minutes maximum on site before alarm response."

"And the sixth team member?" Akira asked.

Sera hesitated. "Lin. For medical support if someone gets injured."

"Lin's a healer, not a combat operative."

"Which is why we bring her. We're trying to minimize violence, remember? Having a healer present signals non-lethal intent."

The logic was twisted but sound. They were planning a military operation while simultaneously trying to maintain moral high ground.

"When?" Akira asked.

"Eighteen hours from now. Before the second assault window opens. We hit them while they're preparing, disrupt their coordination, buy ourselves time."

Through the Link, Akira felt Lyria's concern mixing with approval. She understood the necessity even while hating the risk.

"I need to clear this with Lyria first," he said.

"She's still recovering—"

"I'm not asking her permission. I'm including her in the decision. We're synchronized. I don't make choices this big without her."

He left the conference room and headed for medical. Lyria was sitting up in bed, looking significantly better. The deep injuries had healed under Lin's continuous care, leaving only residual fatigue.

[LYRIA STATUS]

Condition: Serious → Stable

Injuries: 91% healed

Combat Readiness: 24 hours

Synchronization: 94% (nearly full recovery)

"I heard through the Link," she said as he entered. "You're considering Sera's plan."

"It's risky but might be our best option. Offense instead of waiting for them to hit us again."

"And you'd be infiltrating a military facility with five others. No backup, no exit strategy if things go wrong, trusting that your abilities are enough to get you out."

"Yes."

She was quiet for a moment, processing. "I hate it. I hate that you'd be in danger without me able to help. But I also think Sera's right—we need to change the dynamic, stop reacting and start acting."

"If I do this, you stay here. You're still recovering, not combat ready."

"I know. Which is why I hate it even more." She reached for his hand, and synchronization jumped to 95% the moment they touched. "But I trust you. And I trust Sera to bring you back alive."

[DECISION POINT]

Option A: Approve infiltration mission (high risk, potential strategic advantage)

Option B: Reject mission, continue defensive preparations (lower risk, certain second assault)

Recommendation: Option A - proactive engagement improves survival probability by 23%

Even the system agreed with Sera's plan, though the percentage increase was depressingly small.

"We do it," Akira decided. "We hit them before they hit us."

The next eighteen hours were intense preparation.

Kael drilled phasing techniques, learning to bring others through walls with them. Hana refined her illusions to cover entire team movement. Kaede practiced non-lethal takedowns—disabling opponents without killing. Lin studied combat first aid protocols.

Sera coordinated with Yoshida's intelligence network, getting updated facility layouts, guard rotations, security protocols. Colonel Tanaka provided tactical training on military infiltration—movement patterns, communication discipline, emergency extraction.

Akira trained with everyone, his Reality Anchor enhancing their practice sessions, helping them push their abilities to new levels under time pressure.

Through the Link, Lyria monitored everything from medical, offering tactical input and emotional support. The separation was difficult—they'd barely been apart since achieving perfect synchronization—but manageable with the Link maintaining connection.

[SYNCHRONIZATION: 95% → 96%]

[LINK INTEGRITY: Nearly fully repaired]

[SEPARATION TOLERANCE: Improving]

At 16:00 hours, the strike team assembled in the facility's garage. Six manifested, one armored van, equipment that looked civilian but concealed combat capabilities.

Yoshida appeared for final briefing. "My contacts can give you fifteen-minute window before alarm response. Beyond that, you're on your own. If captured, I can't protect you—this operation is completely deniable."

"Understood," Sera said.

"And Akira—if this goes wrong, it sets back integration efforts by years. Maybe permanently. Are you certain?"

He thought about Takeshi's memorial. About Lyria nearly dying. About a hundred manifested waiting for the next assault that would kill more of them.

"I'm certain."

They loaded into the van. Kael drove—their reflexes and spatial awareness made them the best operator. The others sat in back, reviewing final details.

Akira's system provided continuous updates:

[MISSION TIMELINE]

Transit: 23 minutes

Infiltration Window: 17:03 - 17:18 (15 minutes maximum)

Extraction: Immediate upon objective completion

Success Probability: 64%

Catastrophic Failure Probability: 19%

Partial Success Probability: 17%

Nearly one in five chance of catastrophic failure. Those weren't good odds, but they were better than waiting for the second assault.

Through the Link, Lyria sent steady reassurance. I'm here. Always here. Come back to me.

I will.

The government building appeared—modern, unremarkable, disguised as administrative offices. Security was visible but light, exactly as intelligence suggested.

"Shift change in two minutes," Sera said, checking her watch. "Hana, illusions up. Kael, ready to phase."

Hana's eyes glazed slightly as she projected illusions. To external cameras and casual observation, the van became ordinary delivery vehicle, the manifested inside appearing as civilian workers.

They exited the vehicle at 17:03 exactly. Moved toward the building with practiced casualness. Guards glanced at them without interest—Hana's illusions showing authorized personnel, expected arrivals.

"Perimeter clear," Sera whispered. "Kael, take us through."

Kael touched each team member, and reality phased around them. Akira felt the disorienting sensation of passing through solid matter—walls becoming probability instead of certainty, his body existing partially in multiple states.

They emerged inside the building's restricted area, bypassing all physical security.

[INFILTRATION: SUCCESSFUL]

[CURRENT LOCATION: Floor 3, Administrative Wing]

[TARGET: Floor 5, Command Center]

[TIME ELAPSED: 2 minutes]

[TIME REMAINING: 13 minutes]

They moved through empty corridors—shift change meant minimal personnel, perfect timing. Akira's Reality Anchor stayed active at minimum level, enhancing the team without creating obvious disturbances.

At the stairwell, they encountered a guard. Kaede moved with inhuman speed, disabling them with a nerve strike before they could raise alarm. Lin caught the falling body, lowered them gently.

"Non-lethal," Kaede confirmed. "They'll wake with a headache but no permanent damage."

Fourth floor. Fifth floor. The command center door ahead, electronic lock glowing red.

"Kael," Sera said.

They phased through, checking the interior. "Three personnel inside. Computers active. This is it."

"Can you extract data remotely?"

"Need physical access to terminals. Security is isolated from network."

Sera made the call. "We go in. Fast and clean. Disable personnel, extract data, out in five minutes."

They phased through as a group, emerging inside the command center simultaneously. The three military personnel looked up in shock.

"Don't move," Sera commanded, her voice carrying absolute authority. "We're not here to hurt you. Stay calm and this ends without violence."

One reached for an alarm. Kaede disabled them before their hand made contact. The other two froze, recognizing the impossibility of fighting manifested at close range.

"Restrain them," Sera ordered. "Lin, make sure they're comfortable. Hana, block the door."

While Kaede secured the personnel with zip ties, Akira moved to the computers. His system interfaced with the military network through proximity—not hacking exactly, but reality manipulation allowing data extraction.

[DATA ACCESS: GRANTED]

[DOWNLOADING: Assault plans, force disposition, communication protocols, hardliner identities]

[TRANSFER SPEED: 4.7 MB/sec]

[ESTIMATED COMPLETION: 3 minutes]

Information flooded through the system into storage drives Sera had provided. Complete battle plans for the second assault—force composition, timing, approach vectors. Names and positions of the hardliners coordinating the operation. Communication encryption keys.

Everything they needed to counter the next attack.

"Two minutes until alarm response," Sera said, monitoring the timeline. "How long for download?"

"Ninety seconds. Almost there."

One of the restrained personnel spoke up, voice steady despite the situation. "You're making a mistake. Attacking government facility? That's terrorism. You've just proven everything they say about you."

"We're extracting information to defend ourselves," Akira replied, not looking up from the data transfer. "If that's terrorism, then defending your existence is a crime."

"Existence purchased through reality manipulation and violence. You're not victims—you're threats wearing sympathetic faces."

"Sixty seconds," Sera interrupted. "Philosophical debate later. Data now."

The download completed. Akira disconnected, pocketing the drives.

[MISSION OBJECTIVE: COMPLETE]

[TIME ELAPSED: 11 minutes]

[EXTRACTION WINDOW: 4 minutes remaining]

"We're done. Move out."

They left the personnel restrained but unharmed, Hana's illusions masking their exit. Down the stairs, through the corridors, Kael phasing them through walls to bypass the responding security forces.

They emerged outside just as armed guards rushed into the building, completely missing the manifested team exiting through solid walls.

Back to the van. Kael drove smoothly away while sirens began wailing behind them.

"Mission successful," Sera reported. "Zero casualties, objective achieved, clean extraction."

Through the Link, Akira felt Lyria's overwhelming relief. You're safe. You're alive. Thank god.

Told you I'd come back.

[MISSION COMPLETE]

[CASUALTIES: 0]

[OBJECTIVE: Achieved]

[INTELLIGENCE GATHERED: Comprehensive]

[ALERT: Enemy now aware of manifested offensive capability]

[RESPONSE: Unknown]

They'd succeeded. Retrieved critical intelligence, demonstrated capability, escaped without violence.

But they'd also crossed a line. From purely defensive to actively infiltrating military facilities.

The hardliners would respond.

The question was how.
