Chapter 93: Damn You, Verne
The Palau International Airport had the specific quality of infrastructure that exists at the edge of where the ordinary world stops paying attention — functional, clean, the kind of airport that moved people through without particularly caring where they came from or where they were going, which was exactly the right quality for a group of people who had come from complicated places and were going somewhere complicated.
The cars were waiting on the tarmac.
Not the airport shuttle kind. The kind that communicated, without requiring elaboration, that the people getting into them had made arrangements in advance and those arrangements reflected a specific relationship with resources.
Rango stood at the top of the jet stairs, took a breath of air that was genuinely different from New York — warm, salt-edged, the specific quality of air that had come off open water rather than through an urban grid — and felt the specific pleasure of being somewhere that wasn't where he'd been.
Ted appeared at his elbow.
"Nice air," Ted said.
"Nice air," Rango confirmed.
"Better than New Jersey."
"Most things are better than New Jersey."
"I've been saying that," Ted said, "for months."
The flight had been, objectively, the most comfortable sustained travel experience of Rango's life.
He'd had wine from a cellar that required a specific kind of money to have assembled. He'd had a cigar that the flight attendant had described with the specific reverence people use for things that cost more than cars. He'd slept in a bedroom that was, technically, inside an aircraft, which should have been impossible but had been achieved through the application of sufficient resources to the problem.
Victor had read. Jones had consulted his notebook and slept in the way of someone who had learned to sleep anywhere because fieldwork required it. The Director had spent six hours in deep conversation with Toothless, who had resized to cabin-appropriate dimensions and accepted both the attention and the chocolate with equal grace.
Lara had read mission documentation, which she kept in a folder that she did not open until the cabin lights were down and which she closed before the lights came back up, which told Rango something about her operational habits that he filed.
He'd noticed Victor watching him twice — not the way people watch strangers, the way people watch subjects they've already categorized and are now updating their assessment of. Both times Rango had acknowledged the look without reacting to it, which was the correct response.
The totem had stayed warm throughout the flight.
Not urgent. Not threat-level. The ambient warmth of something registering a presence at close quarters and maintaining its notation.
Old. Contained. Watching.
He'd left it at that.
On the tarmac, Lara fell into step beside him.
She had the specific quality of movement that fieldwork produced in people who had been doing it long enough — economical, aware of the space around her, the kind of walk that looked casual and wasn't.
"The survival briefing," she said. "I was going to give you one on the plane and then you disappeared for six hours."
"I was sleeping," Rango said.
"I know. My point stands."
"What's the briefing?"
"Deserted island protocols," she said. "Wild animal encounter procedures. Emergency shelter construction. Basic foraging in tropical environments." She paused. "You looked at me like I was speaking a different language when I started the conversation at the airport."
"I've handled situations that required improvisation," Rango said.
"Has any of those situations been on an isolated island with no external support?"
"Not specifically," he admitted.
"Then the briefing is relevant," she said, pleasantly. "I'll give it on the yacht."
"I'll be on the deck," Rango said.
"Then I'll give it on the deck," Lara said, with the easy confidence of someone who had spent fifteen years adjusting to circumstances and found it unremarkable.
The corner of Rango's mouth moved.
"Uncle Jones," she said, dropping back slightly to where Jones was making his way down the stairs with the careful deliberateness of someone whose knees had an opinion about descending and who was declining to let that opinion govern the pace, "are you sure about the coordinates?"
"I've calculated them seventeen times," Jones said.
"The source."
"Old friend," Jones said. "Reliable." He paused on the last step. "He's on the island. Has been, I think, for some time. He sent the signal when he was able, which means there are periods when he isn't able, which means the island is not currently neutral territory." He looked at Lara with the level attention of someone delivering information that he wanted received accurately. "I want you to understand that I know this trip is not a sightseeing expedition."
"You've known me for twelve years," Lara said.
"I know," Jones said. "I'm saying it anyway because it makes me feel better."
Rango looked at Ted.
Ted looked at Rango.
"He said that," Ted said.
"He said it," Rango confirmed.
"In your exact words."
"Almost exact," Rango said.
Victor came down the stairs last.
He moved with the unhurried quality of something that had been performing the mechanics of human arrival for longer than arrival had required performance. He looked at the tarmac. At the cars. At the specific quality of tropical light that was doing what tropical light did — everything more saturated, the shadows shorter, the air itself more present than temperate-zone air usually was.
His eyes found Rango.
Stayed there for exactly the amount of time that would register as normal and stopped just before it would register as something else.
He got in the car.
Rango got in the car.
Ted, as they pulled away from the airport: "Clare sent a message."
"Does she recognize him?"
"She recognized him," Ted said. "But her message is — there's some other material in it."
"Is the recognition at the beginning or the end?"
Ted scrolled. "The end."
"Read the end."
"She says, and I'm quoting: 'That man is one of the three Elder Vampires of the New York covenant. He's been in the city for at least two hundred years. Shadow Hunter records describe him as the most politically stable of the three — not the most powerful, but the most patient. His name has appeared in our archive in connection with several artifacts that predate recorded supernatural taxonomy.'" Ted paused. "That's the end."
Rango sat with that.
A two-hundred-year-old Vampire Elder on an expedition to an island that predated recorded supernatural taxonomy.
Not because he was a Jules Verne enthusiast.
Because of an ancient rumor that had been circulating in the Vampire community long enough to reach an Elder, which meant it was old enough to be considered worth investigating by someone who operated on centuries rather than decades.
"Victor knows something about the island that Jones doesn't," Rango said.
"Probably," Ted said. "The question is whether what he knows is in addition to Jones's information or in opposition to it."
"He knew my grandfather," Rango said.
"He said that," Ted confirmed. "And then stopped."
"People stop because what comes next is either too much or too little," Rango said. "With someone who's been alive for two hundred years, I'd bet on too much."
He sent a text to Dean: Vampire Elder. New York covenant. Called Victor. Two hundred years. Connected to artifacts that predate current taxonomy. If you know anything, send it.
Dean's reply came back in forty seconds: Never heard of him. Also Sam says hi. Also why didn't you invite us on the private jet.
Rango put the phone away.
The hotel was the only establishment on the island that met the specific expectations of people who had arrived on a private jet, which was a category of expectation that most hotels in most locations declined to compete with.
The suites were good. The view was better. The air was the same air as the tarmac, which was the best air Rango had encountered in recent months.
He put Toothless on door duty — the Night Fury had resized back to his compact form and was sitting in the corridor with the alert, patient attention of something running a threat assessment on its surroundings and finding the surroundings acceptable but worth monitoring.
Inside, he looked at the ceiling for a moment.
Then called Gloria.
"Landed," he said, when she picked up.
"Good," she said. "How's the hotel?"
"Good. Better than the Cabin would provide."
"The contractor found another issue with the electrical today," Gloria said. "He described it as ambitious."
"That's worse than creative."
"He says he's seen it once before, in a building where the original owner had specific beliefs about which direction current should flow." A pause. "I didn't ask follow-up questions."
"That's the right call," Rango said.
"The bar's going to be beautiful," Gloria said. "I want you to know that. Whatever the electrical situation. It's going to be exactly what it's supposed to be."
"I know," he said. "I believe that."
A brief silence that was the kind of silence that communicated something without requiring words.
"Call me tomorrow," she said. "Before you leave for the island."
"Before I leave," he confirmed.
He put the phone down and looked at the ceiling and thought about the Vampire Elder who had been alive for two hundred years looking at the coordinates of an island that predated recorded supernatural taxonomy.
Thought about Night Furies as scouts for something larger.
Thought about his parents in Los Angeles, maintaining a cage.
Everything is connected to everything.
The knock on the door came before anyone had been in the hotel long enough for Rango's definition of too soon to apply.
He opened it.
Jones, the Director, Lara, and Victor were in the corridor with the assembled equipment of people who had been ready to leave for longer than they'd been in the building.
The Director, notably, had a camera around his neck and the expression of a man for whom the hotel had been a transition rather than a destination.
"There's a storm front coming in," Jones said, without preamble. "It'll be in the forecast area in thirty-six hours. The window to reach the island is now, not tomorrow morning."
Rango looked at them.
Looked at the room behind him, which he had been in for approximately twenty-five minutes.
"The ship is at the dock?" he said.
"Ready to go," Jones said. "The captain is briefed."
"Does the captain know where we're going specifically?"
Jones looked at him. "The captain knows the coordinates. He doesn't know what the coordinates mean."
"Does he know about the storm window?"
"He knows there's a weather situation and that we need to leave before it develops."
"Then he knows enough," Rango said. "Give me five minutes."
The yacht was the specific class of vessel that existed at the intersection of serious capability and serious resources — not a pleasure craft performing functionality, an actual oceangoing vessel that happened to have been fitted with the kind of interior that resulted from someone who wanted both.
Standing on the dock looking at it, Rango thought about Dom's sinking rigid-hull inflatable on Staten Island — the Vickers machine gun, the November water, the specific absurdity of that evening — and felt the specific comedy of the contrast.
This is how you travel to a supernatural engagement when you have the right contacts, he thought.
Toothless jumped off the dock into the water beside the hull and immediately discovered that the open ocean was a different proposition than the Staten Island bay. He looked at the water with the surprised expression of something that had expected familiar physics and had received different physics.
He looked at Rango.
"It's the ocean," Rango said. "It's bigger."
Toothless looked at the ocean.
Made a sound that communicated his assessment of the ocean's scale.
"You can fly," Rango said. "You don't have to deal with it from water level."
Toothless considered this.
Launched himself upward from the dock with the specific efficiency of a Night Fury that had decided the ocean was best appreciated from altitude, and went up into the tropical sky with the easy certainty of something returning to its preferred environment.
"Sensible," Ted said, from Rango's shoulder.
"He's always been sensible," Rango said. "He just takes the scenic route to the sensible conclusion."
On the deck, two hours out from the island, the afternoon had the specific quality of open-ocean light that Rango had read about and not experienced — the horizon farther away than any land-based horizon, the sky occupying a larger percentage of the visual field, the specific feeling of being in the middle of something rather than at the edge of it.
Lara found him at the rail.
She had the survival briefing in hand — actual notes, which she had prepared, which told him something about her operational discipline.
"I'll make it practical," she said.
"Go ahead," he said.
She gave it efficiently — the actual useful information, stripped of the framework, delivered the way people who have actually used knowledge in the field deliver it versus people who have studied it. She knew the difference between things you needed to know and things you needed to have heard. She gave him the first category.
When she finished, he looked at her.
"You've been to places like this before," he said.
"I've been to places that were described as being like this," she said. "The actual experience was different from the description, which is the consistent pattern in my work." She looked at the horizon. "Jones's forty years of documentation is the most thorough preparation I've seen for any expedition I've been part of. That makes me more concerned, not less."
"Why?"
"Because the better the preparation, the more you've acknowledged what you're dealing with," she said. "And the picture his documentation describes is — large. In the way that things that have been there since before human civilization are large." She looked at him. "You're not concerned."
"I'm realistic," Rango said. "Concerned and realistic are different registers."
"What's the realistic picture?"
He thought about how to say it.
"The island has been there since before the current supernatural order," he said. "Which means the things on it predate the categories we use for everything else. Demons, angels, entities — those are all current-order designations. What's on this island might not fit into any of them." He paused. "Toothless is documented in the island's oldest accounts. Not a Night Fury specifically — but a creature matching his description, with his behavioral profile. As a scout."
Lara looked at the sky, where Toothless was visible — a black shape at significant altitude, moving in the holding pattern he used when he was ranging ahead.
"What's he scouting for?" she said.
"That's the question," Rango said.
"You don't know."
"I know it's something the island needs a scout for," Rango said. "Which means it's something that doesn't come to the surface on its own. Something that waits for the right approach." He looked at the horizon. "Jones said his contact is on the island. Has been for some time."
"Someone's been on that island," Lara said slowly, "for a period that requires the phrasing 'for some time.'"
"Yes."
"Voluntarily?"
"That's the other question."
Lara looked at the ocean.
"I've been in tombs that were locked from the inside," she said. "That's always the version I want to think about." She paused. "It's rarely the version that turns out to be true."
The storm front, when it arrived, arrived the way the best weather events arrived in every disaster film that had ever been made about open water — not gradually, with warning, giving you time to prepare, but as a transition from one state of affairs to another in the space of twenty minutes.
The sky that had been blue became something else.
The water that had been blue-green became something else.
The horizon that had been definite became something approximate and then something theoretical.
Jones gripped the rail and looked at what was ahead with the specific expression of a man who has spent forty years building toward a moment and has arrived at the moment and found the moment to be more than the preparation accounted for.
"It's real," he said, to himself, to the storm, to forty years of documentation and calculation and waiting. "It's exactly where I said it was."
In front of them — visible now, because the storm was not obscuring it but had become a navigational feature rather than an obstacle — was the tornado.
Not a tropical storm. Not even a hurricane in the ordinary classification.
The Poseidon Adventure (1972) understood it. The Perfect Storm (2000) understood it. The specific category of sea event that exists at the outer edge of what physical weather can produce and which carries, in addition to its meteorological properties, the specific quality of something that has purpose — the tornado on the water, its column reaching from the ocean surface to the cloud base, rotating with the patient certainty of something that had been in this location for considerably longer than weather events were supposed to persist.
"That's the entrance," Jones said.
"That's a tornado," Lara said.
"That's the entrance," Jones said again.
"Those are the same thing," Lara said.
"In this case, yes," Jones said.
The captain's cabin, which Lara moved toward with the purposeful speed of someone who had decided the conversation needed to involve the person steering the boat, was empty.
"He left," Jones said, from the rail.
"He—"
"I told you. He left. Some time ago." Jones's voice had the specific quality of a man who knew this and had chosen the timing of the disclosure carefully. "Autopilot. The coordinates are locked in. The physics of the approach will handle the rest."
Lara turned.
The specific expression of someone who has just realized that the decision was made before they knew there was a decision to make.
The yacht was being pulled.
Not dramatically — not with the theatrical violence of the Poseidon Adventure's wave, but with the patient, irresistible physics of a vortex that had been established for a very long time and had pulled things into it before and understood the process completely.
The rail was not symbolic. Rango took it with both hands and looked at the tornado's column and assessed the situation with the specific calm of someone who had been through Staten Island in November, and an Anna Manina apartment with a Devourer-class entity, and a Hell Legion on a small island, and had concluded that panic was a resource expenditure with poor returns.
"Everyone secure," he said. "Ted—"
Ted was already secured — the specific grip of someone who had thought about this before the situation required thinking about it.
Toothless came down from altitude with the specific speed of a Night Fury that had been ranging ahead and had seen what the ranging revealed and had come back immediately. He landed on the deck with both feet and pressed himself against Rango's leg and looked at the tornado with the bright, alert, completely-not-afraid expression of something that had been in this situation before.
Which, Rango thought, was its own kind of information.
You've seen this before, he thought, looking at the Night Fury. Haven't you.
Toothless looked up at him.
Made the sound.
"Hold on," Rango said, to the group. "When we're through, stay with whoever is closest to you. Don't try to move independently until the motion stops."
The tornado reached for them.
Not metaphorically — the column's base expanded, the water around them rising into the rotational pattern, the physics of it absolute and indifferent and very large.
Jones, at the rail, had the expression of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) — the older man at the edge of the impossible thing he's been working toward, the moment where the life's work and the life converge and you find out whether the work was worth it.
"To Verne!" he said, over the sound of it.
The Director, who had one arm around a support column and the other hand on his camera because of course the camera was operational, raised his free hand.
"To Verne!" the Director said.
Victor, in the cabin doorway, gripped the frame with one hand and watched the approach with the flat attention of something that was calculating rather than feeling, which was the vampire's version of preparation.
Lara was at the rail, both hands on it, the specific posture of someone who has decided that the situation is happening and the correct response is to face it at full attention rather than brace against it.
She looked at Rango.
"If we survive this," she said, "I want a complete briefing on everything you know about what's on the other side."
"If we survive this," Rango said, "you'll have it."
"Deal," she said.
The yacht entered the column.
The world went vertical.
The ocean split.
Not the metaphorical split of a storm — the actual splitting of something, the specific opening of a boundary that had been maintained in this location for a very long time and that was, in the physics of reaching the island, the door.
The Director's camera was operational throughout.
The Director was tumbling, because the weightlessness and the rotation had combined into something that human bodies were not designed to navigate, but the camera was in his grip and he was not letting go of the camera, and through the tumbling and the weightlessness and the specific disorientation of passing through a boundary that separated ordinary geography from whatever was on the other side, his voice arrived in the chaos:
"DAMN YOU, VERNE—"
Not in anger.
In the specific register of someone whose entire life has just been confirmed as having been pointed toward exactly this, who is experiencing that confirmation while being involuntarily airborne, who is furious at the man who spent the 1870s writing accurate accounts of places he had apparently visited and had not adequately warned the reader about.
The camera kept running.
The boundary held them for a moment.
Then released.
Stillness.
The specific stillness of somewhere that was not where they had been.
A harbor. Calm water. The yacht sitting in it with the settled patience of something that had been through a transit and had arrived.
Green. Extraordinarily green, in the specific way of places that had not been subject to the modifications that human habitation imposed on environments. The kind of green that existed before the concept of a lawn.
The kind of air that existed before the concept of a city.
Rango stood on the deck.
Looked at what was around them.
Toothless was on the bow, standing at full height, his head up, his eyes scanning the tree line with the alert forward attention of something that had come home to a place it had knowledge of that it hadn't carried consciously until this moment.
The island knew him.
It was in the way the air moved when he moved. In the way the specific frequency of sound around them shifted slightly when he oriented toward the interior.
Scouts, the accounts had said. Creatures that arrive before something larger follows.
Toothless was not arriving.
He was returning.
Ted, from Rango's shoulder, looked at the tree line.
Looked at the Night Fury.
Looked at Rango.
"Back in Ghana," Ted said, "there was a second part to that saying. The journey has already chosen you." He paused. "The second part was: and it knew, when it chose, exactly who you were."
From somewhere in the interior of the island — through the green, through the specific layered sound of a place that had been undisturbed for a very long time — something moved.
Something large.
Patient.
Aware that they had arrived.
Rango looked at Toothless.
Toothless looked at the interior.
"Okay," Rango said. "Let's find out what we came for."
