Chapter 90: The Legend of Skull Island
The Brooklyn street racing scene operated on its own clock — earlier than most legitimate commerce, later than most legitimate entertainment, in the specific hours when the neighborhood had thinned out enough to use the road for its actual potential.
By seven-thirty, the block had the specific energy of an event that had been running for two hours and was approaching its conclusion: the modified cars lined up, the crowd pressed against the barriers, the specific demographic of people who showed up for this kind of thing doing exactly that.
Rango was eating a hot dog.
He had started the hot dog approximately ninety seconds before the race began and had finished it with thirty seconds to spare. He was working on a second one when the black Dodge came across the line.
Dom's face, visible through the rolled-down window, communicated several things simultaneously.
He drifted to a stop ten feet from Rango, applied the brake with the specific force of someone parking a frustration rather than a car, and sat there for a moment.
Rango finished the hot dog.
Mia, standing beside him with her arms crossed and the expression she wore when her brother was losing and she was trying not to enjoy it too visibly, made a sound.
"You ran well," Rango said. "Better than last time."
"Don't," Dom said, through the window.
"The nitrous was clean. I could hear it from here."
"Rango."
"The entry on turn three was actually perfect—"
"Rango."
"—which makes what happened after turn three a philosophical question rather than—"
"RANGO."
Mia had given up on not enjoying it.
Dom looked at his sister with the expression of a man who is losing on multiple fronts simultaneously.
"I left you behind," Dom said, to Rango, "by more than five seconds. On my best track. With nitrous." He said each element as though presenting evidence. "That's not a race. That's a demonstration."
"Genius," Rango said, patting McQueen's roof, "is just the entry requirement for seeing us."
Mia laughed.
Dom looked at the sky.
McQueen's displays cycled through something that was probably not appropriate to describe in detail but which conveyed his feelings about the result comprehensively.
"Come on," Rango said, pulling Dom's door open. "You said there was a buyer. Let's go see the buyer."
McQueen pulled out of Brooklyn with Dom in the passenger seat and Rango driving, which was its own comedy — a man who had just been beaten comprehensively sitting in a car that had beaten him, which was going to require processing time that Dom was visibly not giving himself.
He was quiet for approximately four minutes.
Then he noticed the steering wheel.
Specifically: that the steering wheel was making minor adjustments that did not correspond to Rango's hands.
His eyes went to Rango's hands, which were resting on the wheel with the light touch of someone who was present but not directing.
Then to the road.
Then to the wheel again.
"It's driving itself," Dom said.
Rango said nothing.
"Your car," Dom said, "is driving itself."
"He prefers to," Rango said.
A beat.
"He," Dom said.
The windshield came alive — the animated eyes appearing, the grin that McQueen used when he'd decided someone was worth engaging. He looked at Dom with the bright interest of something encountering a new person and running its own rapid assessment.
"Hey," McQueen said. "You drive well for a human. Your entry on turn three was actually excellent."
Dom stared at the windshield.
At the eyes.
At the grin.
At Rango.
"Your car," Dom said carefully, "talks."
"Yes," Rango said.
"He talks and drives himself."
"Yes."
"So the races—"
"McQueen runs his own races," Rango said. "I sit in the seat."
Dom absorbed this.
Something crossed his face — the specific expression of a man who has been carrying a bruise to his pride for several weeks and has just discovered that the bruise came from a fundamentally different situation than the one he thought he was in.
"I knew it," he said.
He said it with the quiet relief of someone who has located the explanation for something that had been contradicting his model of the world.
"I knew there was no human driver who could do that to me," Dom said, to no one specifically. "The physics of it — the entry angles — it didn't make sense for a human driver." He looked at McQueen's displays. "You're not human."
"Correct," McQueen said. "I'm McQueen."
Dom looked at him. At the animated eyes. At the specific quality of a personality that had been fully formed before it arrived in this world and had opinions about everything.
Then, slowly, something happened to Dom's expression that Rango had not anticipated.
He turned in the seat.
He put his hand on the center console the way you put your hand on something you're treating with specific reverence.
"I have been dreaming," Dom said, with a sincerity that was completely unironic, "about a car like you my entire life."
McQueen looked at Rango.
Rango looked at the road.
"Not — not like this, obviously," Dom continued, with the intensity of someone who has found the correct frequency for a conversation and is committing to it. "But a car that's real. A partner. Something you build a relationship with over years." He stroked the console, which produced a visible shudder from McQueen. "I've always talked to my cars. People think it's crazy. But you talk back."
"Dom," Rango said.
"I'm just saying—"
"I can see what you're doing and it's not going to work."
"I'm not doing anything," Dom said, with the expression of someone who is absolutely doing something.
"McQueen is not for trade, sale, loan, or extended borrowing," Rango said. "He's family. Would you give your family away?"
Dom looked at McQueen.
McQueen looked at Dom with the expression of something that is genuinely touched and simultaneously very certain about where it lives.
"...No," Dom said.
"Correct," Rango said. "Now tell me about the buyer."
Dom patted the console once more — gently, the goodbye of someone ending a conversation they intend to revisit — and turned forward.
"Old guy. Seventy-something. Was a professor before he made his money, but the money came from exploration. Treasure hunting, basically, but the legitimate kind — he's published, he's got the credentials." Dom paused. "He's been looking for those coins specifically for about twelve years. Had a whole provenance theory about them."
"Name?"
"Indiana Jones," Dom said.
Rango looked at the road for a moment.
"Indiana Jones," he said.
"That's what he said."
"Like the movies."
"Like the movies," Dom confirmed. "Which, in my experience of the last few weeks, means exactly nothing about whether or not it's true."
Rango thought about this.
He had seen all four films. He knew the archaeology, the artifacts, the specific combination of academic credential and field recklessness that produced a man who found the Ark of the Covenant and the Holy Grail and survived both. He knew the fedora and the whip were not affectations — they were tools, the same way a consecrated Colt was a tool.
In a world that had MIB and the Cabin in the Woods and Night Furies summoned from animated films, Indiana Jones as a real person was not even the most surprising thing about the week.
"Okay," Rango said. "Let's go see Indiana Jones."
The farm was in New Jersey, which Rango had not anticipated — he'd expected something more dramatically situated, a mansion or a warehouse full of crates with question marks on them. But the farm was genuinely a farm: pasture, grassland, the specific peaceful quality of land that had been worked for a long time and had settled into what it was supposed to be.
He took a breath of the air when he got out of McQueen.
Grass. Actual grass. The kind of air that New York didn't have because New York had decided other things were more important.
"When I first got to New York," Rango said, to no one specifically, "I wanted to buy a place like this eventually. Be outside the city."
Behind him, no response.
He turned.
Dom was still in McQueen, leaning toward the center console, saying something at a low volume that had the cadence of a man making an argument he had been asked to stop making.
"DOM."
Dom emerged from the car with the expression of someone who had been making progress.
"Commission," Rango said. "Remember why we're here."
"I remember why we're here," Dom said. "I'm multitasking."
Indiana Jones was seventy-three years old and looked like a man who had been seventy-three years old for approximately fifteen years — the specific quality of someone who had been in the field continuously and whose body had reached an equilibrium with the demands placed on it and had decided to maintain that equilibrium rather than decline.
He was on the terrace of the farmhouse with a hunting rifle, taking shots at ducks over the far pasture with the unhurried accuracy of a man for whom this was a casual Tuesday morning activity.
He lowered the rifle when he heard them coming.
His eyes went to Rango's face.
Stayed there for a moment — not the recognition of someone checking a face against a memory, but the specific assessment of someone checking a face against a file. A professional look. The look of someone who had been reading people in the field for fifty years and had gotten good at it.
"You didn't tell me you were coming today," Jones said. To Dom, but looking at Rango.
"Spontaneous visit," Dom said. "He's hard to schedule."
"Hm." Jones set the rifle against the rail with the care of someone respecting the instrument. "Come sit."
The terrace table had the organized clutter of a working space — maps, folded; a notebook with handwriting that covered every available margin; a coffee cup that had been refilled several times. And, turning in his fingers with the absent habit of someone who had been carrying a specific object for a long time, a gold coin.
Rango recognized it immediately.
The same profile. The same edge wear. The same specific age in the metal.
He moved his chair slightly to the left, which put him at a different angle from the coin.
Jones noticed. The corner of his mouth moved.
"Kane's house," Jones said. "That's where those came from. I'd know them anywhere — I excavated half of that collection myself, over about twenty years of fieldwork. Kane was a wealthy man who understood that the right price could acquire most things, including things that weren't technically for sale." He set the coin on the table. "I spent a long time trying to buy them back. Then I found out what had happened to the house."
"Kane," Rango said. "You knew him."
"We had an arrangement," Jones said. "He bought things I found and couldn't officially document. I used the money to fund the next expedition." He picked up his coffee. "It was an imperfect arrangement. Most arrangements that work are."
He looked at Rango with the direct attention of someone who had run the preliminary assessment and was now proceeding to the actual conversation.
"You cleared the house," Jones said. "Kane, the mistress, the residual entities. That's not nothing. Most people who've tried to enter that property since Caroline's last night have not had good outcomes." He paused. "Which means you're either extraordinarily lucky or you know what you're doing. And nobody in this business is that lucky."
"I know what I'm doing," Rango said.
"Yes," Jones said. "I believe that." He leaned back. "Fifteen million for the coins and the paintings. The bank wire can happen this afternoon if you'd like. No provenance questions, no documentation requirements."
"That works," Rango said.
Jones nodded. Poured coffee for both of them without asking whether they wanted it. "There's something else I'd like to discuss, if you're willing."
"I had a feeling," Rango said.
Jones smiled — the specific smile of someone who had been doing this long enough to appreciate when the person across from them was paying attention.
He reached into the notebook and produced a folded paper — a photocopy of something older, the reproduction of a map that had been drawn in a hand that had used different conventions than current cartography.
He laid it on the table.
"Skull Island," he said.
Rango looked at the map.
"The Kong version or the Mysterious Island version?" he said.
Jones looked at him. "You know your references."
"I've seen the films."
"Both apply, partially," Jones said. "The island I'm describing has been referenced in the source material for both. The Kong mythology and the Jules Verne account are drawing from the same actual location, which didn't fully make it into either version." He tapped the map. "I've spent forty years chasing the coordinates of this place. A year ago, I found them."
Rango looked at the map.
At the coordinates in the margin, which were in a notation system he didn't immediately recognize.
"Why haven't you gone?" he said.
"Because every account of the island, across forty years of primary source research, agrees on one thing," Jones said. "Whatever is there is not exclusively archaeological. The physical ruins are real — the treasures, the ancient infrastructure, things that predate every civilization we have a timeline for." He paused. "But the island is also occupied. Has been, continuously, since before recorded history. And the things occupying it are not the kind of thing you walk into with a field team and a satellite phone."
Rango looked at the map.
At Jones.
"You need a hunter," Rango said.
"I need someone who knows what they're walking into and has dealt with comparable situations," Jones said. "I've fought Nazis and ancient traps and a two-hundred-year-old knight. I'm not without field experience." He said it without vanity, just inventory. "But what I've seen in the documented accounts of Skull Island is outside my category."
"What's in the documented accounts?"
Jones opened the notebook to a specific page.
It was dense — references, citations, field notes from expeditions that had gotten close enough to document and not close enough to confirm. Rango scanned it with the practiced speed of someone who had spent six months reading the Rare Devil Records.
Things that predated the current supernatural taxonomy.
Things that didn't fit into the standard categories — not demonic, not angelic, not the entities the Cabin contained, not the alien classifications MIB managed.
Something else, the accounts kept arriving at. Something older than the current order.
He thought about Amanna saying: Everything is connected to everything. That's the architecture.
He thought about the Cabin's Titans. About the ancient entities in the lower levels.
He thought about a collection that had been stored next to Plutonium-239 for decades, excavated by a man who had spent twenty years in Skull Island's documented artifact trail.
"The coins," Rango said. "They came from the island originally."
Jones looked at him.
"Before Kane bought them from you," Rango said. "You found them in the field. You didn't find them in a standard excavation site."
"No," Jones said. "I found them on an island that shouldn't have been accessible by the navigation charts I was using." He held Rango's gaze. "I got in, I got the coins, and I got out, and I've been trying to figure out how to go back properly ever since." He paused. "The coins are not decorative. I told your broker they were part of a larger set. That's true. But the set isn't a collection — it's a mechanism."
"What kind of mechanism?" Rango said.
"The kind," Jones said carefully, "that the Cabin in the Woods would describe as a key." He let that sit. "Not a metaphorical key. A functional one. For something that has been locked for a very long time."
The terrace was very quiet.
A duck landed on the far pasture and looked at them with the indifferent attention of a duck.
Dom, who had been sitting slightly apart and listening with the careful attention of someone who had recently recalibrated his definition of impossible, said: "So the coins that Rango had stored next to nuclear material and sold to private buyers — those coins are pieces of a key to something ancient and locked."
"Yes," Jones said.
"And the buyers—"
"The buyers have them now," Jones said. "Which is actually fine. The mechanism requires all pieces to be in proximity to function. Dispersed, they're individually inert." He looked at Rango. "Which is how they've been for the last thirty years, since Kane's collection was sealed in that house with whatever Kane's wife did on her final night."
"Caroline wanted them found," Rango said. "She waited."
Jones looked at him with the specific attention of someone receiving information that fits a framework they've been building for a long time.
"Yes," Jones said. "I believe she did."
Rango sat with it for a moment.
The coins. The island. The mechanism. Jones's forty years of documentation. The Cabin's Titans. The MIB's extraterrestrial traffic. The Los Angeles thread.
Everything is connected to everything.
"My schedule," Rango said, "is genuinely full right now. I have a situation in Boston that I'm going to tonight, and after that a larger situation in Los Angeles that takes priority."
"I know," Jones said.
Rango looked at him.
"I've been doing this for fifty years," Jones said. "I know how to wait for the right window." He picked up the coin and turned it in his fingers. "I'm not asking you to go tomorrow. I'm asking you to agree to go. When Los Angeles is resolved."
"What's on the island that can't wait indefinitely?" Rango said.
Jones was quiet for a moment.
"The island's stability is a function of the key mechanism being dispersed," he said. "While the pieces are separated, the lock holds. If someone — or something — were to gather them, intentionally or not—"
"The lock opens," Rango said.
"The island becomes accessible," Jones said. "Which means what's on the island becomes accessible to whoever opened it." He paused. "I'd rather we were the ones who arrived first."
Rango looked at the map.
At the coordinates.
At Jones's face — the face of someone who had spent fifty years being right about things that other people told him were impossible and had arrived at a calm certainty about the next impossible thing.
"One more thing," Jones said.
His tone shifted — not dramatically, just the specific register of someone delivering the piece of information they've been holding back because they knew it would change the answer.
"The Curator of your museum," Jones said. "Director McPhee. He's agreed to come."
The terrace was very quiet.
Rango looked at Jones.
At the map.
Thought about the Curator — the man who had told him to take two days after the Foot Clan destroyed his door. Who had said you did well before anything else when he arrived at the aftermath. Who kept coming in over his pajamas at midnight when things went wrong and whose first question was always whether Rango was okay.
Who Rango had spent six months working for and who he had concluded was one of the few genuinely decent people in a position of institutional power that he had encountered.
The Curator was going to Skull Island.
"When did he agree?" Rango said.
"Last week," Jones said. "He and I have known each other for thirty years. He knows what's on the island." Jones held his gaze. "He also told me, if I ever found a way to go properly, to make sure you were part of it." A pause. "His words were: that young man has a tendency to be wherever the important things are happening, and I'd rather he was with us than on his own."
Rango sat with that for a long moment.
"The Curator," he said.
"Is coming," Jones confirmed. "With or without you, eventually."
Rango looked at the farm. At the map. At the gold coin turning in Jones's fingers.
At Dom, who was watching him with the expression of a man who had agreed to come to a transaction and had ended up at the beginning of something considerably larger and who was trying to decide how he felt about that.
"After Los Angeles," Rango said.
"After Los Angeles," Jones agreed.
He extended his hand.
Rango shook it.
"Try the coffee," Jones said. "I make it from beans I brought back from Peru. Everything else about this farm is ordinary. The coffee is not."
He picked up the hunting rifle and looked at the pasture.
"Also," Jones said, conversationally, aimed, and fired with the unhurried precision of someone who had been doing this since before Rango was born, "you should know that the island accounts include at least three separate references to a creature that matches the Night Fury's taxonomy."
The duck on the pasture relocated with urgency.
Rango looked at the back of Jones's head.
"Toothless," he said.
"There are references," Jones said, reloading with practiced ease, "to winged black creatures of considerable intelligence and speed in the island's oldest documented sightings. The indigenous accounts specifically describe them as scouts — creatures that arrive before something larger follows."
Rango thought about the winged symbol that had appeared on the summon wheel before Toothless arrived.
About the system's patterns — the way each characteristic built on the last, the way the totem had been pulling in specific directions since the mansion.
"The system," he said, to himself, "didn't give me Toothless randomly."
"Nothing on that island," Jones said, looking at the pasture, "has ever been random."
He took another shot.
The duck had wisely departed.
"After Los Angeles," Rango said.
"The coffee," Jones said, pointing at the cup.
Rango picked it up.
Jones was right about the coffee.
On the way back, McQueen was quiet for the first few miles — the specific quiet of someone who has been listening to a conversation carefully and is processing what they heard.
Then: "The island accounts."
"I heard," Rango said.
"Night Furies as scouts," McQueen said.
"I heard."
"Scouts for what?"
Rango looked out the window at the New Jersey landscape becoming the New York approach.
"That," he said, "is the question Jones spent forty years researching and didn't answer this morning."
"Which means he knows," McQueen said, "and decided not to say yet."
"Correct."
McQueen was quiet for a moment.
"I don't like that," McQueen said.
"Neither do I," Rango said.
Dom, in the passenger seat, had been looking out his window at the highway since they left the farm with the expression of a man running his own accounting.
"The coins," he said. "The ones I sold."
"Yeah," Rango said.
"I need to call the buyers," Dom said. "And explain that the things I sold them are pieces of an ancient mechanism and that they need to hang onto them without gathering them together."
"That's the conversation," Rango confirmed.
"Mia is going to have things to say about this," Dom said.
"Mia has things to say about everything," Rango said. "That's why she's useful."
Dom looked at him.
Looked at the highway.
"You know what the worst part is?" Dom said.
"What."
"I'm not even surprised anymore," Dom said. "Sentient car, Night Fury, Hell Legion, ancient island mechanism." He shook his head slowly. "Three months ago I was running a chop shop and racing on weekends. Now I'm managing artifact dispersal for a supernatural lock."
"That's the work," Rango said.
"Is it always like this?"
Rango thought about the mansion. About Kane and the plutonium. About the Anna Manina apartment and the hole in the fortieth floor. About the Foot Clan and the Turtles and the Addams family and Azazel and the Hell Legion on Staten Island.
"This has been a busy couple of months," he said. "Usually it's slightly less."
"Slightly," Dom said.
"Slightly," Rango confirmed.
Dom looked at the road.
"Family," he said, in the specific tone he used when the word was doing the work of a longer sentence.
"Yeah," Rango said.
McQueen's engine note shifted — the specific contentment of a vehicle that was going where it was going and felt good about the direction.
