CHAPTER 31, When Darkness Recognized Its King
Darkness swallowed the battlefield completely.
The Veil members could no longer see the ruined plains around them. The broken stones, the dead trees, even the sky itself had vanished beneath an endless sea of shadows.
Only Jay remained visible.
Standing silently at the center.
His crimson eyes glowed faintly within the darkness, cold and emotionless like a predator observing trapped prey.
The pressure in the air became suffocating.
Even breathing felt difficult.
The armored giant tightened his fists nervously.
"…What is this place?"
Kael's expression remained serious.
"…It's not an illusion."
His voice lowered.
"He's changing the environment itself."
The assassin looked around carefully, trying to locate an escape route.
But every direction looked identical.
Infinite darkness.
Infinite silence.
And hidden somewhere within it—
moving shadows.
The spear wielder clenched his broken weapon tightly, blood still dripping from his wounded shoulder.
"This is insane…"
For the first time in years—
the Veil had lost control of a battlefield.
And they all knew it.
Jay slowly walked forward.
One step.
Then another.
The shadows beneath his feet moved like living servants.
Every movement carried unnatural authority.
Kael watched him carefully.
Then finally spoke.
"You've crossed the first boundary."
Jay stopped several meters away.
"…Boundary?"
Kael nodded slowly.
"There are levels to power beyond human understanding."
His eyes darkened slightly.
"And you've begun stepping into one of them."
Jay remained silent.
But internally—
he listened carefully.
Because Kael clearly knew things the system still hadn't revealed.
Kael continued.
"Normal humans use mana."
"Talented warriors develop skills."
"Rare individuals awaken authority."
Then his gaze sharpened.
"But beings like you…"
A pause.
"…become concepts."
The battlefield fell silent again.
Even Elara looked confused hearing those words.
"Concepts?" she repeated quietly.
Kael answered without looking away from Jay.
"A true Monarch doesn't simply control power."
"He represents it."
"The Shadow Monarch does not command darkness…"
His voice grew colder.
"…he becomes darkness itself."
The shadows around Jay reacted violently the moment those words were spoken.
Almost like they agreed.

Jay's eyes narrowed slightly.
The system was responding directly to Kael's words.
Which meant—
they were true.
Kael slowly raised his hand again.
"We can still stop this."
Jay gave a faint smile.
"…You keep saying that."
"Because you don't understand what happens if you continue awakening."
Kael's calm voice finally showed traces of urgency.
"The Shadow Monarch Path never ends peacefully."
Jay's smile disappeared.
"And yet you still came here to provoke me."
Silence.
Kael didn't answer.
Because both of them already understood the truth.
The Veil had created this situation themselves.
The armored giant suddenly roared in frustration.
"I'm done listening!"
He charged forward violently, dark energy exploding around his massive body.
The ground cracked beneath every step.
His fist shot toward Jay like a cannonball.
But before the attack landed—
Jay disappeared.
No movement.
No flash.
Only absence.
The giant's eyes widened.
Then—
multiple crimson eyes opened within the surrounding darkness.
Watching him.
The giant froze instantly.
"…What…"
Then the shadows attacked.
Dozens of black tendrils erupted from every direction, wrapping around his arms, legs, and throat.
The giant roared and struggled violently.
But the more he fought—
the tighter they became.
Jay appeared directly in front of him.
Silent.
Calm.
The giant swung his fist desperately.
Jay caught it effortlessly.
The battlefield trembled from the impact.
But Jay didn't move even an inch.
The giant's eyes widened in horror.
Impossible.
No human should possess this level of physical strength.
Jay looked directly into his eyes.
"You rely too much on force."
Then—
CRACK.
The giant screamed.
His arm bent unnaturally as Jay crushed the armor and bones beneath it with pure grip strength.
The Veil members immediately reacted.
The assassin disappeared into shadows again.
Kael formed several dark seals around his hands.
And the spear wielder lunged forward despite his injuries.
But suddenly—
the shadows beneath them all moved.
Not randomly.
Strategically.
Like an army acting under perfect command.
The assassin was forced out of hiding instantly.
Black tendrils grabbed her ankle mid-step.
Kael's dark seals shattered before activating.
The spear wielder was thrown backward by a wall of darkness erupting beneath him.
For the first time—
the Veil realized something terrifying.
Jay wasn't merely controlling shadows.
The shadows themselves were protecting him.
Acting independently.
As if they possessed life.
Kael's expression darkened further.
"…It's happening too early."
Jay slowly turned toward him.
"You know a lot about this power."
Kael remained silent for a moment.
Then finally—
"…Because centuries ago…"
His voice lowered carefully.
"…the Veil once served the Shadow Monarch."
Everything froze.
Even Jay's eyes widened slightly.
Elara stared at Kael in disbelief.
"What…?"
Kael ignored her completely.
"Our duty was originally simple."
"To maintain balance between worlds."
"To prevent Monarchs from destroying reality itself."
His fists tightened slightly.
"But the Shadow Monarch…"
A brief pause.
"…was different."
Jay felt something strange hearing those words.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
Like distant memories trying to resurface.
Kael continued quietly.
"He wasn't the strongest Monarch."
"He wasn't the cruelest."
"But he was the most feared."
The shadows around Jay pulsed faintly.
"And do you know why?"
Jay said nothing.
Kael answered anyway.
"Because death itself followed him."
Silence.
Heavy.
Dangerous silence.
Then—
suddenly—
pain exploded inside Jay's head.
His body froze.
Fragments of memory flashed violently before his eyes.
Endless battlefields.
Black skies.
Mountains of corpses.
And standing above them—
a figure covered in living shadows.
A king sitting upon a throne of darkness.
Crimson eyes glowing endlessly.
Then—
the figure slowly looked up.
Directly at Jay.
And smiled.
Jay staggered slightly.
Elara immediately stepped forward.
"Jay!"
But he barely heard her.
Because the figure inside the memory—
looked exactly like him.

Kael noticed instantly.
"…Damn it."
The shadows around the battlefield suddenly became unstable.
Violent.
Chaotic.
Like a storm about to explode.
Kael immediately shouted,
"Everyone retreat now!"
This time—
real fear existed in his voice.
Because he understood what was happening.
Jay wasn't simply awakening power anymore.
He was beginning to remember the being he used to be.
And if the Shadow Monarch fully awakened—
everything around them might disappear into darkness.
Jay slowly raised his head.
His crimson eyes flickered violently between calm and madness.
Then—
he spoke.
But the voice that came out—
was no longer entirely his own.
"…So…"
The shadows trembled.
"…this is where I fell."
And the moment those words echoed across the battlefield—
every shadow in existence bowed. 🔥⚔️👑
