Chapter 83 - Exactly as It Should

Alexander lay on his side for a long moment, simply looking at his husband.

The room had settled into a soft quiet. The frantic intimate sounds of earlier had given way to the steady rhythm of two people catching their breath.

Moonlight filtered through the curtains, spilling pale light across the rumpled sheets

Dashiell looked thoroughly exhausted. His hair was a complete mess, falling across his forehead in damp waves.

Faint marks dotted the pale skin of his neck and shoulders, each one a quiet reminder of Alexander's earlier lack of restraint.

Beautiful.

Alexander reached out almst absentmindedly, his thumb brushing gently across Dashiell's lower lip.

Dashiell blinked up at him. "What?"

"I'm looking."

"You've been looking for at least three minutes."

"And I haven't finished."

"I don't think there are any new discoveries to make."

Alexander's mouth curved. "I disagree." His thumb traced lightly across Dashiell's cheek this time before smoothing an unruly strand of hair away from his face. "I continue to find you exceptionally distracting."

Warmth spread across Dashiell's cheeks. "I think you're biased."

"I am."

"…That's statistically unsurprising."

Alexander laughed, the sound catching him by surprise.

Dashiell watched him for another moment before quietly letting out the breath he'd been holding.

"My muscles hurt."

A hint of amusement found Alexander. "They're supposed to."

"I don't think every muscle is supposed to."

"They'll recover." He leaned in and caught Dashiell's forehead in a brief kiss. "We're going to the gym every Saturday."

Dashiell pulled back just enough to look at him in pure disbelief. "You think this is an argument for the gym?"

"It's an excellent argument."

"I was hoping you'd say I should rest."

"You can," Alexander said, perfectly straight-faced. Relief flickered across Dashiell's features—until Alexander added, "After leg day."

Dashiell stared. "…You're making a joke."

"Nope."

Dashiell sighed with theatrical resignation and rolled onto his side until their foreheads touched again. "I married a menace."

Alexander's arm slipped around his waist, drawing him closer with effortless familiarity. "You married exactly the man you chose."

"…That's true."

"And?"

Dashiell was quiet for a moment. Then the corners of his mouth lifted. "…I don't have any complaints."

Alexander smiled, satisfied enough that he didn't feel the need to hide it. "I was counting on that."

Alexander stayed quiet for a moment longer, simply looking at him. Then he sat up.

"Come on," he said. "We need to clean up."

Dashiell blinked at him, still a little foggy. "…Now?"

"Yes. You're leaking."

The bluntness of it made Dashiell's cheeks warm.

He glanced down and immediately frowned. A slow, warm trickle of semen had begun to slip out of him, mixing with the residual lube and running down the inside of one thigh.

The sensation was sticky and distinctly unpleasant.

"...I don't like that."

Alexander was already moving. He stood, crossed to the bathroom, and returned with a soft washcloth he had run under warm water. "Lie still."

Dashiell did, though his fingers began tapping lightly against the sheets. Alexander sat on the edge of the bed and gently parted his thighs. The first pass of the warm cloth was careful and thorough. He wiped away what had already leaked, then pressed a little more firmly to catch what was still coming out.

Dashiell's nose wrinkled.

"It's still coming."

"It will for a few minutes," Alexander said calmly. "That's normal after I've filled you."

"…I would prefer if it stopped."

Alexander's mouth twitched. He cleaned him a second time, then a third, until most of the mess was gone.

Even so, Dashiell still looked mildly distressed by the residual slickness.

"Shower," Alexander decided. "It'll feel better."

He didn't wait for agreement.

Instead, he simply scooped Dashiell into his arms, ignoring the quiet protest that escaped him, and carried him into the bathroom.

The lights stayed dim. Alexander settled him on the closed toilet lid just long enough to turn on the shower and adjust the water until it reached the gentle warmth Dashiell liked.

"In," he said.

Dashiell stepped under the spray with obvious relief. The moment the water hit his skin, some of the tension in his shoulders eased.

Alexander followed him in, crowding close without making it feel overwhelming.

He reached for the mild, fragrance-free body wash and worked it gently over Dashiell's skin, taking care around the places he knew would still be tender.

Dashiell stood still and let him, eyes half-lidded.

Alexander's hands moved to his hair next, working the same gentle shampoo through the silky strands.

He scratched lightly at the scalp the way he knew helped settle him. Dashiell made a small, content sound and leaned forward until his forehead rested against Alexander's collarbone.

They stayed like that under the water for a while, Alexander washing, Dashiell allowing it, the earlier intensity of the night replaced by something quieter and just as intimate.

When they finally stepped out, Alexander dried him with the same careful attention, then helped him into a clean shirt and soft shorts.

Only once Dashiell was dressed and finally free of the lingering stickiness did the last of his restlessness begin to fade.

He looked up at Alexander, still a little pink-cheeked.

"…Thank you."

Alexander brushed a damp strand of hair from his face.

"You're welcome."

Alexander moved towards the closet while Dashiell sat on the edge of the bed, absently rubbing one foot against the carpet.

A minute later he reappeared in a charcoal T-shirt and loose black sleep trousers.

Dashiell's attention had already shifted to the bed.

The bed was a disaster. The sheets were tangled, one pillow had somehow landed on the floor, and the duvet looked as though it'd lost a fight.

He frowned. "We have to fix it."

Alexander looked toward the bed.

"Already ahead of you."

Together they stripped the bed, moving around each other as though they'd done it a hundred times before.

Alexander gathered the rumpled sheets into his arms while Dashiell pulled the pillowcases free and handed them over.

Alexander carried the bundle to the hamper and dropped it inside.

Dashiell frowned.

"You're making the hamper uneven."

Alexander peered into the laundry basket. "…Am I?"

"Yes."

Without another word he shifted the bundle slightly. "There."

Dashiell inspected it with complete seriousness. "…Better."

Alexander wasn't entirely convinced there was a measurable difference, but he wisely kept that opinion to himself.

Dashiell disappeared into the linen cupboard and returned carrying a neatly folded set of fresh sheets. "These."

Alexander took one end while Dashiell caught hold of the other.

They spread the fitted sheet together, each walking around opposite sides of the mattress.

"Lift your corner."

"I am."

"Not enough."

Alexander obediently lifted it another inch.

Alexander looked across the bed at him. "You're very demanding."

"I have standards."

"One of the many reasons I married you."

Dashiell looked at him in thoughtful silence before a small smile appeared.

"…I like that reason."

The flat sheet followed, then the duvet. Dashiell stood back, head tilted as he inspected their work from several angles.

"…The left corner is crooked."

Alexander reached over and straightened it. "How about now?"

Another careful inspection. "…Much better."

Alexander picked up one of the pillows and, without warning, tossed it at him. It landed squarely against Dashiell's chest with a soft whump.

Dashiell blinked, looked down at the pillow, then back at Alexander. "…Did you just throw a pillow at me?"

"I did," Alexander said, entirely unrepentant.

"…Why?"

"I wanted to see what you'd do."

Dashiell considered that for a moment.

Then, without a word, he picked up the other pillow and sent it flying.

It struck Alexander square in the face.

For the briefest moment neither of them moved. Then Alexander laughed—an unguarded, surprised sound—and snatched up another pillow of his own.

Dashiell let out a startled squeak as it bounced harmlessly off his shoulder.

"You started it," Dashiell informed him.

"You retaliated," Alexander pointed out, still smiling.

"That seemed fair."

"Did it?"

"Yes."

Alexander shook his head, amusement still clear in his eyes. Before Dashiell could arm himself again, he plucked both of them off the bed and tucked them securely under one arm.

"I believe that's enough warfare for one evening."

Dashiell looked at him with mild disappointment. "…I think I was winning."

"Based on what evidence?"

Dashiell considered the question as though it genuinely deserved thought.

"…Confidence."

Alexander laughed again, shaking his head. "An unconventional scoring system."

"It works for me."

Dashiell climbed onto the freshly made bed and, without hesitation, flopped forward.

Alexander joined him a moment later. Dashiell rolled onto his side until he was sprawled comfortably across Alexander's chest, one arm draped over his waist as though he'd always belonged there.

Neither of them spoke. There wasn't anything left that needed saying.

Alexander slid his fingers through Dashiell's still-damp hair.

For the first time that evening, the house felt completely still.

Exactly as it should.
