Chapter 11 - The one who walks between shadows

The night had a strange weight to it.

Not the kind that came from clouds or wind—but the kind that pressed against the soul.

Fenrik Hayashi stood at the edge of the ruined street, Wolf Slayer Axe resting against his shoulder. The city lights behind them flickered weakly, like they were afraid of the darkness beyond the broken buildings. This was the real world—but it no longer felt fully human.

Something had crossed over.

Taro Hyun sensed it too. His Tiger Reaper Scythe hummed softly, the curved blade catching faint moonlight. "They're close," he said calmly. "Not devils. Not yet."

Aoi tightened her grip, eyes scanning rooftops. "Then what are they?"

Fenrik exhaled. "Spies. Shadows that move ahead of something worse."

As if his words were a signal, the air shifted.

A ripple passed through the street, and three figures stepped out from the darkness—thin, distorted silhouettes with eyes like cracked glass. They didn't roar or scream. They simply watched.

Then they moved.

Fenrik charged first, axe tearing through the air. One shadow split apart, dissolving like smoke—but the other two slipped past him, moving unnaturally fast.

"Taro—left!" Aoi shouted.

Taro spun, scythe flashing. Steel met shadow, sparks bursting as the creature shrieked for the first time. The sound was wrong—too sharp, too hollow.

But before they could finish the fight, something unexpected happened.

A chain snapped through the air.

It wrapped around the final shadow's arm, yanking it backward with brutal force. A blade followed—short, dark, precise—piercing straight through the creature's core.

The shadow collapsed.

Silence returned.

Fenrik turned instantly, axe raised.

A man stood a few meters away, chainblade dagger retracting smoothly into his grip. He wore a long, travel-worn coat, dust-stained boots, and eyes that looked like they'd seen too many roads.

"I was hoping you'd finish them," the stranger said calmly. "But you were about to get flanked."

Taro didn't lower his weapon. "You interfered."

The man nodded. "Yes."

Aoi frowned. "That's… not comforting."

Fenrik studied him carefully. No aura screaming danger. No immediate hostility. But something about him felt out of place—like a piece from another board.

"Name," Fenrik said.

"Eryx," the man replied. "Just Eryx."

No surname.

Taro noticed that instantly.

"Why are you here?" Fenrik asked.

Eryx glanced down the street, then back at them. "Because this city sits near a thinning boundary. And because those weren't random shadows."

He paused, then added, "And because I've been alone too long."

Aoi crossed her arms. "Convenient timing."

"Unavoidable timing," Eryx corrected. "I've been tracking movements like this since an outpost near Creldoster went silent."

Fenrik's grip tightened.

Creldoster Realm.

The name alone carried weight.

Taro stepped forward. "You know about the realms."

"I walk between them," Eryx said simply. "Not chosen. Not blessed. Just… surviving."

There was no pride in his voice. Only fact.

Fenrik exchanged a glance with Taro. The Sage's words echoed faintly in his mind—Allies will come from paths you did not choose.

"We're not recruiting," Fenrik said.

Eryx met his gaze. "Good. I'm not asking to lead."

That answer landed differently.

Another ripple surged through the street.

More shadows.

This time, five.

No time for debate.

"Stay behind us," Aoi said sharply.

Eryx didn't argue.

The fight erupted fast. Shadows swarmed from alleys and rooftops, blades forming from darkness itself. Fenrik slammed his axe into the ground, shockwaves ripping outward. Taro moved like a predator, scythe carving clean arcs through the night.

One shadow slipped past—too fast.

Aoi stumbled.

Before Fenrik could react, a chain snapped out, pulling the shadow off balance. Eryx moved in instantly, dagger flashing, finishing the kill with brutal efficiency.

No hesitation. No wasted movement.

The last shadow fled—melting into the dark.

Silence again.

This time, heavier.

Fenrik turned slowly. "You didn't hesitate."

Eryx wiped his blade. "Hesitation gets you killed."

Taro watched him closely. "You fight like someone who's been hunted."

Eryx didn't deny it.

"I can help you," he said. "Not as a hero. Not as a savior. As someone who knows how these things move."

Aoi looked at Fenrik. "He saved me."

Fenrik thought for a long moment.

Then he nodded once. "You walk with us. For now."

Eryx inclined his head. "That's enough."

As they moved out, none of them noticed the faint mark left behind on the cracked pavement—a symbol barely visible before fading away.

And far beyond the city, something unseen shifted…

not alerted,

not revealed,

but watching.

Then am eye came.
