Returning to the camp, Luke found the two women sitting together, chatting merrily.
The awkwardness from earlier had completely disappeared. Their time alone had apparently been enough for them to warm up to each other.
"We brought the wood," Luke announced, drawing their attention.
"Laila? Why aren't you helping Luke? You're walking back empty-handed," Monica scolded as she stood and took the sack from Luke.
"Ah, that..." Laila muttered, glancing away
Luke barely held back the smirk tugging at the corner of his lips.
The fact that Laila could still walk was surprising enough. Carrying anything on top of that would have been asking too much.
The pitiful girl was on the verge of fainting that's why he spared her the labor.
"Let me help," Roxanne said, taking several logs from the sack before stacking them beside the pile of twigs and dried grass they had gathered earlier.
The two women busied themselves preparing the fire while Luke turned to Laila.
