Chapter 306: The Soul-Card Showdown After the War of Gods
Above the Speed World track, the storm of flowers and thunder that had claimed both monsters swept through the arena, leaving the Sky Dragon and Baroness de Fleur, both sitting at 5000 ATK, to destroy each other in battle.
"Managing to trade your Synchro Monster for a god like that, that's genuinely impressive, senpai."
"Underclassman, did you really think I was challenging a god card with no plan at all?"
Along the flower-strewn Riding Duel track, Rin Seiya rode at full speed, her white hair streaming out behind her helmet.
"I prepared a lot for this duel, you know. For this duel where our souls collide!"
"In that case, this turn, I'm putting everything I've got into speed too! I remove 2 Speed Counters to activate a Quick-Play Spell during the Battle Phase!"
Amano Rei - Speed Counters: 2 to 0
Rin Seiya had gathered up the hope of Synchro Summoning, pushing Baroness de Fleur's ATK all the way up to 5000.
If Amano Rei hadn't drawn an extra Pot of Greed this turn, bringing his hand up to 5 cards, he wouldn't even have been able to pull off a mutual destruction here.
Then again, if the Trap Card he'd set the turn before hadn't been Return to the Front, but Revival of the Sky God instead, the Sky Dragon's ATK would have ended up even higher.
Nothing to be done about it. That was just how card battles worked; there was always some element of randomness in the mix.
Amano Rei hadn't yet reached the point where he could pull off perfect draws like Kaiba Seto every single time.
But as long as his Deck's construction stayed flexible enough, he could still make up for a slow hand with a few clever little tools of his own.
"Quick-Play Spell, Trap Booster, activate!"

Riding at full speed, Amano Rei raised the Trap Card in his hand, its face clearly showing the dignified pose of a divine figure.
Though he'd arrived a turn late, Amano Rei had made up for the timing gap using other cards.
"Trap Card, Revival of the Sky God, activate! I revive and Special Summon Slifer the Sky Dragon from my Graveyard, then both players draw cards until their hands become 6 cards!"
"Roar!"

Having just destroyed each other with Baroness de Fleur, the Sky Dragon returned to the track once more, its ATK now even 1000 points higher than it had been in that clash.
And right now, having just gone through that mutual destruction, Rin Seiya no longer had any monster left on her field.
Amano Rei swept his hand down from above, calling down the god's thunder once again. "Direct attack, Slifer the Sky Dragon!"
"Superconducting Wave Thunder Cannon!"
The 6000-point direct attack of thunder tore across the track, bombarding down on Rin Seiya, who had no monster left to shield her.
"I activate the set card in my back row!"
Flipping up the card beside her D-Wheel, Rin Seiya seemed to cut off the incoming damage from the god's thunder through sheer force of will just as it reached her.
"Trap Card, Force of Spirit!"
[Force of Spirit] [Activate only during the damage calculation of battle damage on your opponent's turn. The battle damage to yourself from that battle becomes 0. After that, you can add 1 Warrior-Type Tuner with 1500 or less DEF from your Graveyard to your hand.]
Since this reduced her own battle damage to 0, it was an effect targeting the battle damage itself, not the Sky Dragon's attack directly, so it wasn't affected by the god's resistance to being targeted.
"I reduce that 6000 points of battle damage to 0, then add Junk Synchron from my Graveyard to my hand!"
Rin Seiya rode straight through the thunder at full speed, her pale fingertips drawing the card from her Graveyard.
"Don't think you can beat me with just a god, Amano underclassman!"
Just as Nanami Misaki had said, there really was some subtle shift in Rin Seiya during this Riding Duel, something Amano Rei could feel but couldn't quite put his finger on. Almost like she was paying unusually close attention to gods specifically.
With his Sky Dragon's follow-up attack blocked, Amano Rei declared this turn's Battle Phase over, then scanned through the remaining cards in his D-Wheel's card slot.
Using too many cards from his hand would hurt Slifer the Sky Dragon's ATK.
For now, all he needed was the bare minimum of set cards.
Reviving the Sky Dragon hadn't just forced Rin Seiya to burn her life-saving set card, it also let him keep dropping Thunder Bolt on any Synchro Summon she tried.
"I set 2 cards. Turn end!"

"My turn, draw!" The turn passed over, and Rin Seiya drew her card.

Even though Rin Seiya's hand had swelled considerably this turn after that windfall draw from the sky, most of the monster cards she'd need as Synchro Material still couldn't be Summoned in the face of the Sky Dragon's Thunder Bolt lockdown.
"So it's here." And yet Rin Seiya's eyes stayed remarkably calm in this moment, the card she'd drawn this turn reflected in her star-shaped pupils. "This ends here. It's time to put an end to this war of gods!"
Rin Seiya pinched the card she'd just drawn between her fingers, her sparkling star-shaped eyes sweeping past it as she flung it toward her D-Wheel Duel Disk's Monster Zone.
"With this card, I'm putting an end to the god, once and for all!"
"Putting an end to the god?"
"Using a god to end a god! I Normal Summon this card in Attack Position!"
The instant Rin Seiya's Summon unfolded, a pillar of gathered light materialized in front of her racing D-Wheel, angel-like wings slowly spreading open on either side of the column.
"Descend and pass judgment upon the god, in the name of heaven and earth! Camion, the Timelord!"

The Timelord, majestic enough to bridge earth and sky together, let the light wrapped around its pillar-like form fade away, revealing the true face of the earth angel beneath.
If judged by the standards of the Chosen of the Gods Alliance, then a Timelord truly could be counted as a god in its own right.
"Seiya senpai, don't tell me you actually got your hands on a Timelord?"
Rin Seiya being able to use a Timelord actually struck Amano Rei as unusually fitting. Out of all of Eden, there was probably nobody better suited to inherit a Timelord card than her.
As for when Rin Seiya had gotten her hands on it, that could only have been this week's Duel Chronicle.
Because there was a monster on the opponent's field, Slifer the Sky Dragon's Thunder Bolt effect was forced to activate, its second mouth gathering the power of thunder and hurling it down at the 0-ATK Camion, the Timelord, but naturally, it caused no destruction whatsoever.
"No use. A Timelord can't be destroyed by effects!"
[This card cannot be destroyed by battle or by card effects. The battle damage to yourself from battles involving this card becomes 0.]
"So, how does this card feel, underclassman?" Rin Seiya smiled.
"Funny thing, underclassman, you told me the story of the last man on Earth last week, and this week I actually met Mr. Z-one myself in a Chronicle. He was such a kind, gentle man, he didn't even make me duel for it, he just handed the card straight over to me."
Kind and gentle?
All Amano Rei felt was the doting spoiling of an overprotective father.
Whatever else you could say about a Timelord, it was still a final-boss-tier Deck. Being placed as an opponent inside a Chronicle should have counted as at least SS-plus difficulty.
Could you at least go through the motions a little? Just handing it over for free like that seemed a bit much.
"Guess it takes someone like you, senpai. Anyone else who went into that Chronicle would've come out with a beating for sure."
"Now then, let my god bring judgment down on your god! Battle!"
Rin Seiya twisted her D-Wheel's throttle, and beneath the radiant glow of the towering divine pillar, she accelerated into this turn's Battle Phase.
"Camion, the Timelord, attack Slifer the Sky Dragon!"
Symbolizing the wrath of divine authority, the vast, colossal pillar of Camion, the Timelord, crashed into Slifer the Sky Dragon on the other side of the track.
"Attacking with a monster that has 0 ATK?"
"Even if it won't take battle damage and can't be destroyed by battle, what's the point?"
"Is that card a god too?"
Actually, this wasn't a Timelord's first appearance inside Eden, it was just that the Academy's invitational didn't draw nearly the attention of a proper professional tournament like this one, so it made sense that most of the audience had no idea what they were looking at.
"I end this turn's Battle Phase."
The corner of Rin Seiya's mouth curved up with a satisfied tilt beneath her helmet.
"And then, at the end of the Battle Phase, Camion, the Timelord's effect activates!"

Not destruction. A return to the Deck.
Destroyed monsters could be revived from the Graveyard. Banished monsters could be Special Summoned back from banishment. But a monster sent back into the Deck had to be drawn all over again from scratch.
As far as field-clearing methods went in this game, this ranked just below flipping a card face-down and banishing it outright.
Under the influence of a fellow Level 10 god's power, Slifer the Sky Dragon vanished from the field and returned to Amano Rei's Deck.

"Finally dealt with the god. Now it's time for the main event, underclassman!"
"The main event?"
"Our own soul-card showdown, obviously! I'm giving up my god's power this turn too!"
Rin Seiya pulled a card from her hand with her index and middle fingers, while at the same instant, her ring finger and thumb lifted Camion, the Timelord's card off her Duel Disk, a fluid one-handed card exchange executed mid-Riding Duel.
"I release Camion, the Timelord on my field to Special Summon Stardust Synchron from my hand!"

Sneaky senpai, saying she was giving up her god's power. The Timelord would have just gone back to her Deck at the start of next turn on its own anyway; she was just squeezing every last drop of value out of her field resources.
"When Stardust Synchron is successfully Special Summoned, I add 1 Spell or Trap Card that mentions Stardust Dragon by name from my Deck to my hand!"
Having searched a brand-new card into her hand, Rin Seiya revealed and activated another card from her hand.

If the Sky Dragon had still been on the field, none of these monsters in Rin Seiya's hand could have come out at all, which was exactly why she'd needed to break through with the Timelord first.

Having awoken Stardust Dragon's power, Rin Seiya, right after the war of gods had ended, had rolled almost seamlessly into unfolding Shooting Star Dragon, laying out the single most iconic Accel Synchro formation on her field.
"My turn, draw!"

Having laid out her Accel Synchro formation and pushed her Speed Counters even higher, Rin Seiya's speed right now had reached a level where she could vanish from the track at any moment.
"Come on, Amano underclassman! I'm waiting for the soul-card showdown after the war of gods, our own destined battle against Jack Atlas!"
His senpai just couldn't help herself in the end, letting slip the role-play setup she'd been building up in her head the whole time.
Amano Rei glanced over the cards in his hand and Graveyard. "Guess it's my turn to wake Tamashii too. I activate the effect of Nova Junk Synchron in my hand!"
He'd said "wake Tamashii," but the best Tuner monster he currently had on hand was actually this ultra-rare Ghost Rare copy of Junk Synchron.
The only catch was, using this particular card inside a Riding Duel arena inevitably led to one specific outcome.
The Emperor's eyes went wide, unable to believe it. "That card, it's still in that brat's hands?!"
A gift from the Emperor's ex-girlfriend Fiore. Using this card right in front of the Riding Emperor himself was bound to send his blood pressure through the roof.
Well, let him get angry if he wanted. Once this duel was won, the Emperor himself was next in line anyway!
"Oh ho!" Watching from the D-Wheel maintenance area, Fiore's mouth curled into a satisfied smirk of revenge fulfilled the moment she spotted the card. "Things are about to get interesting."
"By Nova Junk Synchron's effect, I Special Summon Yuyu, Level 2 or lower, from my Graveyard, then Special Summon Nova Junk Synchron itself!"

With all the Synchro Material he needed now gathered on his field, ready for a soul-burning showdown of destiny, Synchro starlight burst into flame across Amano Rei's side of the track.
"I tune Level 3 Tuner Nova Junk Synchron with Level 1 Yuyu and Level 4 One Drawn In by the Star Chalice!"

"The king's roar shall now shake heaven and earth! Let this singular, sovereign power be carved into flesh!"

Bursting out of a raging pillar of Synchro fire, a soul set ablaze, Amano Rei's very first and most frequently used soul card spread its scorching demon-dragon wings, roaring as it descended and took flight above his silver-white D-Wheel.
"That's it!" Excitement flushed across Rin Seiya's face, mixed with a flustered pink she couldn't quite hide. "This is exactly what I've been waiting for! This time, let's collide our souls with everything we've got, Jack Atlas!"
A soul-card showdown following the war of gods. Not quite the same era, but a duel unfolding like this couldn't help but remind Amano Rei of the duel between the Pharaoh and Kaiba Seto back in Duelist City.
In that duel too, after the two of them let their gods destroy each other, they'd each pulled out their own Dark Magician and Blue-Eyes White Dragon and kept the fight going.
This, right here, was what it meant for duelists' souls to collide.
Amano Rei pointed up at the demon dragon soaring overhead, declaring its effect. "Red Dragon Archfiend, Right Crimson Mark's effect, activate! Destroy every Special Summoned monster on the field with ATK lower than this card's own!"
The demon dragon's claws, wreathed in raging flame, slammed furiously down onto the ground of the Speed World track.
"Absolute Authority Flame!"
"In that exact instant, Shooting Star Dragon's effect activates! I release this card, Synchro Summon Stardust Dragon from my Extra Deck, then perform an Accel Synchro during my opponent's turn!"
The accelerating wind wrapped around Stardust Dragon's silver-white dragon body spread outward across Rin Seiya's field just before the demon dragon's flames could detonate and sweep through.
"Accel Synchro, fast enough to outrun even light itself!"
That instant of extreme acceleration made Rin Seiya and her D-Wheel briefly vanish from the Riding Duel track altogether.
"They disappeared?!"
"That's the legendary Accel Synchro!"
"Even in a proper Riding Duel arena, that's a rare sight, a genuine feat of skill!"
The very next second, riding a trail of light and stardust, Rin Seiya reappeared back on the track, and out of thin air, a brand-new card born from her Accel Synchro appeared at her fingertips.
"Gathered bonds shall let comrades' souls overlap, shine bright! Illuminate the future that lies ahead of us!"

Unlike the usual Accel Synchro pose of a normal Shooting Star Dragon, this version, decked out in Tech Genus equipment, materialized and charged onto the Speed World track.
Nanami Misaki watched the burst of Accel Synchro light out on the field and murmured to herself. "So that's why Seiya wanted to borrow a card from me. This was the move she had planned."
Antinomy's Tech Genus, overlapping with Yusei Fudo's Shooting Star Dragon, two monsters merging together like that really did carry the feeling of bonds between friends lending their strength.
Once the Accel Synchro completed, the wave of demon-dragon flame representing Right Crimson Mark's destruction effect swept through, but it didn't manage to destroy a single monster.
Not only did Shooting Star Dragon, Tech Genus Overdrive's ATK exceed Right Crimson Mark's own, any monster Synchro Summoned using Shooting Star Dragon as Synchro Material was also unaffected by the opponent's effects for that turn.
Even though Rin Seiya had Accel Synchroed out a monster Amano Rei had never seen her use before, catching him a little off guard, the concept of Accel Synchro itself was something Amano Rei was well aware of. Activating Right Crimson Mark's effect had only ever really been an attempt to bait out that Accel Synchro a little earlier.
"An Accel Synchro, is it. Then it's my turn now!"
In this moment, Amano Rei felt a distinct, burning heat rising from his left wrist. This soul-colliding Riding Duel had stirred a reaction out of the Dragon Mark hidden away within the timeline of 5D's itself.
"Burning soul, Synchro Summon!"
In Amano Rei's Graveyard, the raging flame representing Jack Atlas's burning soul surged up, and in an instant, the fire engulfed and wrapped around Right Crimson Mark's demon-dragon body.
"I activate the effect of Earthbound God Scarlet Nova in my Graveyard!"
This was the very card Amano Rei had sent to the Graveyard as the cost for activating Trap Booster earlier.

With the aid of the strongest Earthbound God's support, skipping right past the requirement for a double Synchro Summon, Red Dragon Archfiend surged forward, evolving directly toward Level 12.

Even though Amano Rei's Graveyard currently only held a single Tuner monster in the form of Nova Junk Synchron, True Crimson Nova Dragon's ATK still comfortably reached a level on par with Obelisk the Tormentor, easily pulling ahead of Shooting Star Dragon, Tech Genus Overdrive.
"Battle, True Crimson Nova Dragon!"
"Burning Soul!"
Wrapping its own demon-dragon body in the raging flame of a burning soul, True Crimson Nova Dragon charged furiously at Shooting Star Dragon, Tech Genus Overdrive, on Rin Seiya's field.
Rin Seiya raised a hand toward the sky. "Shooting Star Dragon, Tech Genus Overdrive's effect, activate!"
[Activate when your opponent's monster declares an attack. Negate that attack.]
"Negating True Crimson Nova Dragon's attack! Meteor Barrier!"
Stardust's power and the burning soul collided and exploded in the sky above the Riding Duel track, only for the resulting blast to be canceled out entirely by Rin Seiya's Meteor Barrier.
Amano Rei had, of course, guessed his attack would end up negated, but he chose to press the attack anyway regardless.
It wasn't wasted effort. In a soul-colliding Riding Duel like this one, the only right choice was to burn everything you had and keep pushing forward with everything you had. There was no way he'd give up on the fight just because of some measly negated attack.
"I set 1 more card. Turn end! It's your move, Yusei Fudo!"
"Ha ha ha ha, I'm honestly thrilled right now! Underclassman, no, at a moment like this, I should be calling you Jack Atlas!"
Rin Seiya's mouth curved upward in a grin she couldn't suppress at all, and at the same time, her fingertips drew the card that began her turn from her Deck.

Rin Seiya looked over Shooting Star Dragon, Tech Genus Overdrive, the monster born from the bond forged on her field.

It was essentially the Synchro equivalent of a Fusion split, though this particular card, Tech Genus Interchange Dragonfly, could only undo the Synchro of "Tech Genus" monsters specifically.
That was exactly why Rin Seiya had needed to Accel Synchro into Shooting Star Dragon, Tech Genus Overdrive for this duel in the first place; an ordinary Shooting Star Dragon wouldn't have been compatible with this effect at all.
Now, Rin Seiya had 3 Synchro Monsters gathered together on her field, their combined Levels adding up to exactly 12.
