Chapter 12 - The Echo of Silence

The world returned to Chen Ying in fragments: the clinical smell of antiseptic, the rhythmic, electronic hum of a monitor, and a heavy, suffocating silence.

She opened her eyes to the ceiling of a high-end medical suite on the yacht. The luxury of the room felt like a cage. A shadow loomed over her, and she realized Chen Shao was sitting by her bed, his face full of exhaustion and confusion. When he saw her stir, he leaned forward, his hand instinctively reaching out toward her.

"Yingying," he whispered, his voice cracking with a vulnerability she hadn't heard in years. "You're awake. The doctor said you suffered from severe exhaustion and... something else. What happened in the spring? What did you do to Xiao Bai's pendant?"

Chen Ying looked at his hand but didn't take it. She pulled her arm back under the thermal blanket, her eyes cold. "It's nothing you need to concern yourself with, President Chen. It was just a 'tantrum,' wasn't it? That's usually the script we follow."

Chen Shao flinched. The title "President Chen" felt like a physical barrier between them. "I saw your feet, Yingying. I saw the blood. I'm trying to understand why you're pushing yourself to this point—"

"Brother Shao!" Wang Bai's voice cut through the room as she burst in, her eyes artfully red-rimmed. She ignored Chen Ying entirely and grabbed Chen Shao's arm, her fingers digging into his sleeve. "The Director says the live-stream is stalling! He needs you to sign off on the next segment. And please... I can't stay here. The way she looks at me... it makes my head hurt. It's too much."

Wang Bai was trembling, the cracked jade hidden beneath her high collar pulsing with a faint heat that only Chen Ying could sense.

Chen Shao looked at the sobbing Wang Bai, then back at his silent, stony sister. The "fog" in his mind fought a violent battle against the evidence of his eyes. "I... I have to go handle the production details," he said, his voice sounding hollow and unconvincing. "Rest, Yingying. We will talk when we are back in the city."

"Don't count on it," Chen Ying murmured as the door clicked shut behind them.

One hour later, back on the Highland...

Chen Ying had insisted on being ferried back to her camp. She wasn't going to let the "White Lotus" have the island to herself while she sat in a gilded cage.

As she stepped off the transport boat, Director Zhao and the medic were already hovering nervously. "Miss Chen, truly, you should stay on the yacht," the Director said, though his eyes were darting toward the drones. Her "resurrection" was a ratings goldmine. "We are about to announce the **'Star-Light Forage'** in the swamp. Given your... collapse, I'm officially giving you a medical pass. You can skip the task and keep your current points for the day."

Zhou Yaya rushed over, clutching Chen Ying's arm with genuine worry. "Yes, Ying-jie! Please stay! We can try to do it, or we can just skip breakfast tomorrow. We aren't that hungry!"

Chen Ying looked at the dark, sprawling Mangrove Swamp below. She could see the silhouette of the yacht in the distance, where Wang Bai was likely watching her.

"If I skip it, the narrative becomes that I'm a frail heiress who couldn't last a single night," Chen Ying said, her voice carrying clearly to the hovering drones. She looked directly into the camera lens, her gaze piercing. "I didn't come here to be 'passed.' I came here to win. Let's go."

[User 'NatureGirl': Look at her! She can barely stand and she's refusing the pass.]

[User 'Bai-er's Shield': Oh please, it's so obvious she's acting. Fainting one minute and 'warrior' the next? The script is so fake.]

[User 'RealityCheck': Acting? The medic literally showed her vitals on the screen earlier. She's pushing through sheer willpower. Respect.]

Yang Zixuan stepped forward, his eyes unreadable but fixed on her. "If you're going, we're going. But if you trip, I'm carrying you back. Deal?"

Chen Ying gave a curt nod. "Deal. Haoran, Yaya—get the gear. We have an orchid to find."

In the Swamp...

The water was black and viscous, smelling of salt and decay.

"Stay on the mangrove roots," Chen Ying commanded, her voice a low, steady anchor in the dark.

As the team descended, a shadow moved in the opposite direction.

Zhang Rui, fueled by Wang Bai's frantic whispered pleas on a smuggled phone, crept into the Highland camp. He found Chen Ying's bag—the one containing her few personal items and the garish, oversized tracksuit Wang Bai had picked for her. He pulled out a pair of scissors, a cruel sneer on his face. "Let's see how 'noble' you look when you have to walk onto the live-stream in rags."

He began to shred the fabric, unaware that a camera drone was hovering silently in the trees, capturing every snip for the millions of viewers.

[User 'TeaSpiller': IS HE FOR REAL? HE'S DESTROYING HER CLOTHES?]

[User 'AntiLotus': Zhang Rui is a literal villain. He's sabotaging her while she's out working!]

Back in the Muck...

A log beneath Chen Ying's hand shifted. A massive, muddy slide of earth began to give way, threatening to pull her into the deep maw of the swamp.

"Ying-jie!" Yaya screamed.

Yang Zixuan lunged forward, his hand snapping out to grab Chen Ying's arm. But Chen Ying didn't panic. She used the momentum, planting a foot on a floating branch and snatching the glowing blue orchid before swinging back to solid ground.

She landed perfectly, the flower safe in her palm. Zixuan let out a breath, his hand still gripping her arm. Her skin was cold, but her pulse was steady.

"I have the orchid," she said, pulling her arm back. "That's all that matters. Now, let's go back. I think we have a guest in our camp that needs to be evicted."
