"I can never accept being bonded to a witch," Kaden said, his voice low and final, carrying the weight of some long-buried conviction.
I just looked at him for a long moment, the cool night air brushing against my skin as the words settled between us like stones dropped into still water. For a heartbeat, I seriously considered telling him to shut his mouth, not out of anger or judgment, but because some statements don't just sound wrong… they sound painfully unnecessary, like unnecessary blades twisted into already open wounds.
Still, I didn't say it.
I didn't want to come across as someone sitting in judgment of his scars. I simply wanted to be someone sitting beside him in the dark. Someone he could talk to, if he ever found the courage to truly open the locked doors inside himself.
So instead, I asked quietly, my voice barely louder than the gentle rustle of leaves in the night breeze, "Why would you say that, Kaden?"
